Nursing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was surrounded by nurses—my Papa, a nurse anesthetist, and my Nana, a cardiac nurse. When I would visit them, the highlight of my time there was hearing about their days. I would sit on my Papa’s lap at the kitchen table, eating a snack, listening as he asked, “Guess what I got to do today?” Those moments planted the first seeds of my passion for healthcare. Inspired by their dedication, I became a patient care technician. Each shift, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to work in the same hospital where my grandparents once cared for patients. One of the nurses on my unit even worked with my Papa years ago. Watching nurses like her, who have devoted decades to the same hospital, has shown me the deep fulfillment that comes from a career built on compassion and commitment. This nurse, Heidi, has become a mentor to me. She is someone I trust for guidance, encouragement, and support as I continue to grow in this field. Working in the hospital has taught me far more than technical skills. Every day, I learn lessons about empathy, resilience, and the impact of human connection. One of the most meaningful experiences of my career occurred during my first Christmas working at the hospital. I cared for a patient who had fallen and broken her shoulder and fingers, leaving her completely dependent on others. She had not been able to walk for weeks and was struggling both physically and emotionally. That Christmas morning, I sat at her bedside and helped her eat one of her first full meals in days. As we talked and laughed, she shared stories about her family and her life. Seeing her brighten during such a difficult time reminded me of the power of compassionate care. When she told me she wished she could take me back to her skilled nursing facility with her, I knew I had made a meaningful impact. At the same time, she had changed me. Although I had only known her for three days, saying goodbye was unexpectedly difficult. That experience confirmed that nursing is not just a career choice for me, it is my calling. My goal is to pursue a career in geriatric nursing. Older adults have spent their lives caring for others, and they deserve dignity, respect, and compassionate care in return. Through nursing, I hope to be a source of comfort during vulnerable moments and to advocate for patients who depend on us the most. Receiving this scholarship would support my journey toward becoming a nurse and allow me to continue developing the skills and education needed to make a lasting difference in the lives of others. I am committed to honoring the legacy of those who inspired me and to providing thoughtful, patient-centered care throughout my nursing career.
