National Honor Society — I volunteered at middle school swim meets to ensure that athletes competed at their events. I also worked a show choir competition where I was in charge of another group and made sure their day went accordingly.

When I was little, I found myself always offering to do the "hard" tasks or the tasks that nobody else wanted to do. I completed these tasks with the purpose of making sure no one else had to do them. I believed that if someone had to do something unenjoyable, I would rather it be me than anyone else. Throughout high school, I always volunteered to do the tasks that no one else wanted to do. For example, in my high school show choir, we had to set up and move risers every week for rehearsal, and I would always help because I knew that other people didn't want to. Even though I didn't want to, I still helped because I knew someone had to. I believe that this can be reflected in the work environment of nursing because I will always be helping my fellow coworkers with tasks that they don't have the motivation to do. In high school, I realized that my desire to help people can be turned into a career. When thinking about my future, I couldn't see myself working a regular 9-5 job, sitting at a computer, with limited face-to-face interactions with other people. Thus, I found myself wanting to work in a hospital, where nothing is exactly the same every day and I am still able to make connections with new people every day. The variability that nursing has is what I am drawn to. I never want to stop learning, and nursing gives me that opportunity to continue doing something I love to do. I also found interest in the role that nurses play in a family's visit to the hospital. Nurses are the people who, according to recent studies, are trusted the most out of any hospital staff. Nurses are also able to not only help their patients with their physical health, but they are also able to comfort their patients and help them with any other concerns they have. I have had the blessing of not having to spend a lot of time with a sick family member in the hospital, but I have heard stories of how nurses have made families feel comfortable and trusting at hospitals. Nurses make or break someone's hospital visit, and I am confident that I am able to brighten anyone's day in the hospital. Something I am passionate outside of nursing is my family. I come from a family of six, and they are truly my best friends. I have three sisters and am the second youngest child. I am more close with my mom's side of the family than my dad's, but I still value both sides equally. My mom's side of the family gets together for every major holiday, and every once in a while, my relatives will throw a surprise visit to my grandparents, who live in my neighborhood. Valuing my family so much correlates to nursing because it makes me want to treat all patients as if they were my family. I believe that your patients having as much value as a family member is an important trait for nurses to have. Another thing I am passionate about is anything that has to do with being off of my phone. I enjoy arts and crafts like Diamond Dotz, crocheting, and coloring, as well as other hobbies like reading. I realized how much time I spend on my phone and how much more productive I could be if I didn't spend as much time on my phone. I like to sit outside and read in the summer, and I like to crochet and do Diamond Dotz whenever I get the time to. Another thing about me that I believe correlates to nursing is the amount of empathy I have for everything. I believe that empathy is an important personality trait that nurses should have because it means that they are able to see things through different perspectives, and it also means that they can deal with sensitive emotions. Overall, I am very confident in my decision to become a nurse and I can't wait to have a positive impact on the nursing field.

My passion for nursing comes from an intrinsic drive to help others. Looking back on my life so far, I find myself offering to do the long, tedious tasks in place of others having to do them. I am also an empathetic person, which gifts me with a tremendous amount of passion for other people. I am also passionate about nursing because it will allow me to make new connections every day. I look forward to meeting new people and learning about any life lessons they have to offer. I am always celebrating "small wins" which makes me excited to be able to celebrate my patients "small wins". Out of my career, I hope to gain more perspective on my life. I believe that surrounding myself with patients who are at their most vulnerable will allow me to realize that my "bad days" aren't nearly as bad as they could be. I also hope to gain composure in my personal life after working in high stress situations. I am also greatly looking forward to forming a "work family", and being able to talk to people who have been in similar situations and know exactly what I am going through. I also hope to gain versatility in my own knowledge that extends beyond scientific skills. Being able to explain complex medical jargon to an elder and to a child will expand communication skills, being challenged daily will enhance my academic skills, and managing my personal time will enhance my organizational skills. Currently, I am undecided on what area of nursing I would like to pursue. However, I am starting clinical rotations in the fall and hope to find an area that calls to me. I believe that if I have an open mind on all areas of nursing, it will allow me to have zero bias when I experience those areas for the first time. Although I do not have a specific specialty, I hope to leave an astounding impact wherever I go. I hope to be known as the compassionate nurse who advocates for her patients, who treats her coworkers with the same amount of respect she thinks she deserves, and who treats every patient, no matter their condition, as if they were part of my own family. Through all of these, I hope to better the culture of every specialty I may end up in and to leave a memorable impact on all of my patients and coworkers.
