I am Ana Luiza Marino, a 19-year-old college freshman, embarking on my journey as a proud first-generation student within one of the state's most esteemed nursing programs. My upbringing in Brazil was shaped by a diligent, low-income immigrant family. My parents often reminded me to focus on my studies to avoid the harsh and unjust working conditions they faced due to their lack of education. Five years ago, my family made the life-altering decision to immigrate to the United States, driven by the desire to provide me with a quality education. My family consistently encouraged me to pursue my dreams with persistence and determination. I would not allow the enormous language barrier to stand in my way. I taught myself English during the pandemic and later achieved a Seal of Biliteracy. High school was a few of the toughest years of my life, but I pursued every opportunity, like dual enrollment, that enabled me to graduate with not just a high school diploma but an associate degree as well. My desire for learning and my love for healthcare motivate me to be a compassionate and competent nurse, committed to making a significant and positive impact on other people's lives.
