Mary Lou Losinger spent her career as a dedicated pediatric nurse practitioner in the small town of Elmira, New York. Even in retirement, she maintains a passion for nursing, and her three sons created this scholarship to honor her professional legacy.

For decades, Mary Lou has been a nurse to everyone around her. She provided end of life care to many loved ones and continues to help her friends with their medical appointments, daily medications, and mental health. She is always nursing and has made her community a better place by applying a “good bedside manner” to everyone in her life.

There is a shortage of well-trained, empathetic, compassionate nurses, especially in small towns. With that in mind, the Losinger Nursing Scholarship seeks to support students who are pursuing a career in nursing and who are dedicated to using their skills to help others.

High school seniors and college students pursuing a degree in nursing are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. First-generation college students and applicants from the Southern Tier of New York are preferred, but all applicants will be considered.

1. My journey into nursing began at the very foundation of patient care, as I currently work as a care partner. Starting at the bottom of the healthcare pyramid gave me a unique perspective on what it truly means to care for others. I’ve seen firsthand how even the smallest acts like helping a patient brush their hair, changing bed linens, or offering a listening ear, can make a significant impact. It was in those moments that I realized the power of compassion in healing. Working closely with nurses opened my eyes to the depth of their role and the critical thinking, the advocacy, and the emotional strength required for the job. I admired how they balanced scientific knowledge with human connection. That’s when I knew I wanted to take the next step, to not only be part of the process but to lead it. I envision my future as a nurse practitioner, guiding care with both expertise and empathy. I’m especially drawn to specialties like anesthesia or pediatric oncology. Anesthesia fascinates me because of its precision and the trust patients place in you during their most vulnerable moments. On the other hand, pediatric oncology touches a deeper part of me and the resilience of children and the strength of their families inspire me endlessly. I want to be someone who not only treats but truly supports them through the toughest battles. My experience from the ground up has shaped my drive. I’ve learned that no role is too small and no act of care goes unnoticed. With each step moving forward, I carry those lessons with me, determined to build, not just in title, but in the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. 2. To me, the phrase “human touch” means showing up with empathy, compassion, and genuine presence in every interaction. As someone who is very passionate and cares deeply for others, and as a care partner with experience working in a hospital, I’ve come to understand just how powerful the human touch can be, especially in a clinical setting. It’s not just about physical contact, but it’s about making people feel seen, heard, and valued in moments when they are most vulnerable. During my time as a care partner (and still currently), I learned/am learning that the small, human moments often have the biggest impact. Whether it’s holding a patient’s hand during a painful procedure, offering a smile when they feel scared, or simply sitting beside them in silence when they’re grieving, these are the moments that remind patients they are not alone. It’s easy to get caught up in tasks, vitals, and routines, but I’ve found that true care happens when we pause, make eye contact, and truly connect. The human touch transforms patient care because it builds trust. Patients are more likely to open up when they feel safe and respected. They’re more willing to share concerns, ask questions, and engage in their treatment plans. I’ve had patients who were initially withdrawn or anxious slowly open up after repeated gestures of kindness. By using a gentle tone, a reassuring word, or simply remembering their name and something personal about them made a big difference. Those connections matter. It also impacts the healing process. When patients feel cared for emotionally, not just physically, their overall well-being improves. I’ve seen patients smile through tears, find strength in hard moments, and even recover faster when they feel supported. As care partners, we may not be the ones prescribing medications, but our role in emotional and mental support is just as critical. To me, the human touch is the heart of healthcare. It’s what turns a hospital room into a space of healing, not just treatment. It’s what reminds patients that they’re not just a diagnosis, but they’re people, deserving of dignity, compassion, and connection. And it’s why I feel so honored to be part of their care.
