I always thought I never knew what I wanted to be, yet I knew all along. From an early age, I would provide care for my dad when he got hurt from working. One injury specifically, he sliced his hand open with reciprocating saw when doing work in our basement. His hand was bleeding everywhere, so much so that my mom passed out due to the sight of the blood. The moment I saw the hand I ran and grabbed the medical bag. Then I cleaned it off and wrapped it with gauze to attempt to stop the bleeding. Although my dad is stubborn, he never went to the hospital for it. Therefore, I checked it daily adding new gauze or butterfly band aids to it. Even though I did all of that, I never considered nursing until my mom almost died from giving birth to my brothers. After both of my mother’s pregnancies, she had postpartum hemorrhaging, but it was the worst with my first brother because she avoided going to the hospital for a week after the birth. Later that week I was going to say goodnight to my parents when I saw my mom bleeding out on the bathroom floor. That is when we all realized the severity of the situation. My dad drove her to the hospital as she was bleeding and once, we got to the hospital all the nurses rushed to my mom. I remember significantly wishing that I could do something to help, and that is when I realized I desired to be a nurse. I wanted to help other people’s family members like those nurses helped my mother. I am forever grateful to those nurses that performed miracles to save my mom to get her to survive till the doctor came.
Human touch is a privilege we obtain being humans because it is the way we connect to one another through emotions and physical touch. When human touch occurs it releases oxytocin and serotonin which reduces stress. Therefore, it is a critical aspect in patient care for nurses. When a patient comes into the hospital, they are most likely uncomfortable or in distress and they look for assistance from the workers. However, the nurses are the ones communicating with the patients the most instead of the doctors. In that fact, human touch is vital to connect with the patients to make them feel comfortable and trustful. Human touch in health care is mostly an emotional connection while remaining professional. This is because people must fully trust the nurses with their life, so simply kindness and gentleness are needed. In my own life, I understand how important human touch is because of my sports and job. In sports, especially track, we push our bodies to our limit, and it can be very emotional. After my races, my friends run up and hug me; this simple action allows me to feel proud of myself no matter how I competed. Therefore, I do the same thing for them, in order to make them feel proud of themselves because they worked so hard. Then, at my job, where I work with kids, it is a rollercoaster of emotion, so you must connect with them on an emotional level. For example, when a child is upset about their artwork getting messed up, I must relate to their sadness but offer a solution. Although I am not having a physical interaction with human touch, I am connecting with them through emotional human touch. This aspect is significantly crucial when working with kids because they just want to be heard and have your attention just like patients. Another example is when a kid is too emotional that they cannot communicate. Therefore, a simple hug or pat on the back allows their significant emotions to calm down. Ultimately, human touch is a vital resource for anyone to use. It is used in every career to connect with associates, peers, patients, and consumers.
