About information technology scholarships

Under the umbrella of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), information technology works as a comprehensive study in the management and technologies of information infrastructure.

Students enrolled in an information technology program can expect to take courses in computer science, business, digital communications, and computer engineering. Information technology focuses on how information sciences support business and communications needs while also understanding the human perspective and policy implications of information in society.

With the present use of technology in today's day and age, an information technology degree gives students majoring in the field a basis for understanding data and technology as it relates to management information systems and tools used in society.

Because of its various applications to today's real-world problems, a STEM degree is highly sought after — the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that jobs in the STEM field are projected to grow 8% by 2029.

As a strong component of understanding information technology, computer science is proving to be a viable career path for students pursuing the degree. 67% of all new STEM jobs are in computing and employment of computer and information research scientists is projected to grow 22% from 2020-2030.

However, women make up nearly half of the U.S. labor market yet only 27% of the STEM workforce is female and women have systematically pulled away from STEM during their early years of education. In addition to the wide gender gap in STEM, Black and Hispanic individuals only make up around 9% and 8%, respectively, of the industry's workforce — further emphasizing a need for scholarship programs and resources for the next generation of STEM professionals.

Information technology scholarships are meant to support students pursuing a career in data science and information management. Other career options include system architecture and administration, software design, document and information management, and web design. Awarding students scholarships and funds to pursue their academic goals is crucial to enriching the next generation of leaders.

What is an information technology scholarship?

An information technology scholarship is awarded to students of any education level, including graduate students, who are pursuing a career in educational data systems and information sciences. Students studying information technology, computer science, or science technology engineering are qualified for these scholarships, which do not need to be paid back.

In 2015-2016, 330,000 students were pursuing degrees in STEM and the number continues to rise, warranting the need for scholarships to provide financial assistance to students and eliminate that barrier. Full-time students who demonstrate academic excellence are eligible for financial aid and must maintain any academic requirements if the scholarship requires it.

Information technology scholarships may help alleviate any student debt and extra costs that students may have accumulated throughout their academic careers. Federal student loans will begin after students graduate, but scholarships may help, even by covering just a small portion of the student loan. Scholarships do not have to be paid back and can be used for tuition, books, or application fees. With the rising cost of tuition for both undergraduate and graduate students, scholarships and grant money are available to help students reach their goals and career aspirations.

Private loans and federal loans are options to fund your studies, however, there are plenty of ways to find money that you won't need to pay back, such as science scholarships. The costs of attending college or university should not be a barrier for any student seeking a science education, and scholarship programs are working toward making higher education accessible for all.

Can you get a scholarship for information technology?

Yes, current college students and those graduating high school are eligible to receive both need-based and merit scholarships. Several national and professional organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Alaska Space Grant Program offer science scholarships and funding to student members and qualified students. The National Science Foundation offers funding and scholarships that are awarded annually to a student in an undergraduate or graduate program, ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the length of the research project.

The Alaska Space Grant Program operates similarly as a consortium of public and private universities that fund graduate fellowships and academic assistance to qualified recipients for conducting research or attending school.

The Foundation for Information Technology Education is another foundation dedicated to uplifting the next generation of information technology professionals and promoting research and resources. Scholarships from the Foundation for Information Technology Education are accepted each year from January to May and honor past computer professionals with financial aid for students, such as the Betty Stevens Frecknall Scholarship and the Dave Sanders Memorial Scholarship.

Fortunately, Bold.org has exclusive scholarships for students attending university, helping take some of that financial burden off their shoulders. New scholarships are added every day, supplying various scholarship opportunities for information technology students.

How to apply for information technology scholarships

Once you've found a scholarship for information technology students that you'd like to apply for, you can create a free account on Bold.org and get started! Scholarships may be categorized by education level, major, and/or location, so be sure to adjust the filters as needed. In addition to your Bold.org profile, some scholarships will require an essay prompt or other submission as part of the application.

How to get an information technology scholarship

The scholarship application process will differ based on the scholarship program, with some scholarship programs requiring transcripts or test scores to see that the applicant is in good academic standing, or perhaps provide a written sample. Some scholarships might want students to demonstrate their knowledge of science education in practice with an essay prompt.

As with any other scholarship program, it is important to get started on the scholarship application process early on so that you can gather any necessary materials, like transcripts or letters of recommendation, and get started on any writing required for the application.

Best information technology scholarships

To combat rising college costs, Bold.org offers an extensive list of scholarships available to college students with any type of grade point average. In addition to broad scholarships open to all students, there are plenty of scholarships for students interested in particular fields, such as STEM, education, or healthcare.

Pursuing a scholarship with narrower applicant criteria can even increase your chances of winning. For instance, a scholarship for graduate students demonstrating academic excellence in computer engineering will have fewer applicants than a scholarship for university students and graduating high school seniors. Since the applicants must fit the requirements, there will be fewer applicants for the former, the chances of winning are higher.

When can I start applying?

If you are a prospective student, it is recommended that you apply for scholarships as soon as possible and stay on top of deadlines early in the school year. High school students and high school seniors usually apply the summer before their incoming year. A majority of these scholarships will consider your application at the time that you are applying to college, but there are scholarships for any education level as well.

If you are already enrolled in a four-year degree program, it is still encouraged that you apply early and are cognizant of deadlines the summer before the academic year starts. Deadlines for the ACT or other standardized tests will also creep up on you, so in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed, it's recommended that you apply as soon as possible.

Make sure to gather the necessary materials and information early on to avoid becoming overwhelmed - especially once the school year starts. If you are unable to find scholarships that early, don't worry! There are deadlines all throughout the year so there will be many scholarships still available outside of that window.

How do I know if I'm eligible for a scholarship?

You will know if you're eligible for a scholarship based on the requirements listed in the description. Each scholarship program differs and might have more requirements than others, so it's recommended you keep track of each scholarship and what you'll need to include on your application.

If you need to provide a personal essay or answer a series of essay questions, make sure to set aside the appropriate amount of time for you to complete the written materials and apply for the scholarships. If you have further questions, it is recommended that you speak with an academic counselor about eligibility requirements or the best way to stand out on your application. Academic counselors can also provide support with essays or other written materials.
