Winning Application

Annika Lumanog

I’ve always been interested in the technology field, but what really drew me in was when I found out what the field of cybersecurity was. Currently, I am a freshman at the University of South Florida and I want to pursue a career where I can help protect individuals and different organizations from threats in the digital world. Behind every system and network, there are real people who rely on their information to stay safe and secured. Not only do I see cybersecurity as a career, but also a way to protect people and make sure they are safe from attacks online. This motivates me to keep learning and improving on a daily basis so that one day I can make a real difference in everyone’s digital safety. Outside of academics, I love to play tennis in my free time. I’ve played tennis since I was four years old and went on to compete on my high school varsity team. A knee injury led me to undergo surgery during my senior year of high school, which temporarily put my tennis journey on a hold. I had to learn the importance of recovery and patience. Though I am still unable to play to this day, tennis taught me how to stay disciplined and focused even when I am facing setbacks. It’s a sport that pushes me to improve mentally and physically, and continues to shape my mindset both on and off the court. My interest in cybersecurity started with a general curiosity in technology, but it quickly grew into something more meaningful. I love problem solving and figuring out how to stop issues before they actually happen. I always approach challenges with a positive mindset and I see them as opportunities to improve rather than obstacles. I hope to strengthen my skills and gain more experience that will prepare me for any challenges once I start my career in cybersecurity. If I receive this scholarship, I would use the funds to support my education in paying for tuition, textbooks, and any certifications that I need for my career. Online threats are constantly evolving and I want to be able to improve my skills to help me grow into someone who can make a meaningful impact in this field. This scholarship would not only support my education, but also give me the opportunity to pursue certifications and other learning opportunities that would strengthen my knowledge.

Cybersecurity is more than just a profession to me it is a calling, a responsibility, and a means to protect individuals and organizations from ever-evolving threats. My passion for this field stems from my deep curiosity about how technology functions and how it can be both a tool for innovation and a target for exploitation. As an undergraduate student pursuing cybersecurity, I have faced challenges, but each has reinforced my commitment to breaking barriers and creating a more secure digital world. My interest in cybersecurity began with a fascination for ethical hacking and digital forensics. Initially drawn to criminal justice, I transitioned to cybersecurity when I realized the immense impact cybercrime has on individuals and businesses. Watching videos of cybersecurity professionals uncovering scam networks and exposing security vulnerabilities sparked my curiosity. I immersed myself in self-learning, absorbing information from YouTube, podcasts, and online courses before formally enrolling in a cybersecurity degree program. Despite my enthusiasm, my journey has not been without obstacles. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is the underrepresentation of people like me in cybersecurity. As a first-generation college student and a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holder from El Salvador, I have had to navigate systemic barriers that limit access to federal employment opportunities in cybersecurity. This reality forced me to rethink my career path, pushing me to seek alternative ways to contribute to the field while advocating for more inclusive opportunities. Financial constraints have also posed a significant hurdle. Certification exams, educational resources, and conference attendance come at a cost, making it difficult to access the credentials and networking opportunities essential for success in cybersecurity. To overcome this, I have actively sought scholarships, participated in free cybersecurity training programs, and leveraged community-driven resources such as NYC Mesh, where I volunteer to expand internet access for underserved communities. In addition to overcoming personal challenges, I have taken on leadership roles to help others break into cybersecurity. As President of my college’s Cybersecurity Club, I create an inclusive environment where students from all backgrounds can develop technical skills, collaborate on projects, and gain exposure to industry professionals. I mentor fellow students, organize cybersecurity workshops, and encourage participation in competitions such as the National Cyber League (NCL). My goal is to ensure that no student feels isolated or discouraged from pursuing cybersecurity due to their background or lack of experience. Looking ahead, I aspire to work in security operations, specializing in threat detection and incident response. My goal is to contribute to an organization that values diverse perspectives and fosters an inclusive security culture. Furthermore, I want to continue advocating for underrepresented communities in cybersecurity by developing initiatives that provide mentorship, training, and financial support to aspiring professionals facing similar challenges. This scholarship would significantly impact my journey by alleviating financial burdens associated with obtaining certifications and attending cybersecurity conferences. With these resources, I will be better equipped to pursue my career goals and continue making cybersecurity more accessible to all. My experiences have shaped me into a resilient and driven individual who understands that true security comes from inclusivity, collaboration, and a commitment to lifting others as I climb. Cybersecurity is not just about defending systems it is about empowering people. I am committed to breaking barriers, driving change, and ensuring that cybersecurity is a field where everyone, regardless of their background, has an opportunity to thrive.
