Growing up as the daughter of an Air Force veteran has had a profound impact on my values, perspective, and ultimately my career aspirations. From an early age, I was exposed to the principles of discipline, service, and resilience, qualities that have shaped not only who I am as a person but also the direction I have chosen for my future. My parent’s experience in the Air Force instilled in me a deep respect for commitment and responsibility. I grew up understanding that service is not just about duty, but about contributing to something larger than oneself. Whether through stories of teamwork, sacrifice, or perseverance, I learned that meaningful work often requires dedication even in the face of challenges. These lessons have stayed with me throughout my academic journey, especially as I have pursued a path in technology and cybersecurity. One of the most significant ways this background has influenced me is in my sense of purpose. Cybersecurity, in many ways, parallels the mission of the military, both focus on protection, defense, and maintaining stability in complex environments. Knowing that my parent played a role in protecting national security has inspired me to pursue a field where I can contribute to safeguarding digital infrastructure. In an increasingly connected world, cyber threats pose serious risks to individuals, organizations, and even national security. This connection between my upbringing and my academic interests has reinforced my desire to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful impact. Hackers Against Hate: Diversity in Information Security Scholarship
My passion for cybersecurity stems from a deep curiosity about how systems work and, more importantly, how they can fail. I have always been interested in technology, but my specific interest in cybersecurity was sparked when I first learned how easily vulnerabilities in everyday systems could be exploited. Realizing that the digital tools we rely on, whether for communication, finance, or infrastructure, can be both powerful and fragile motivated me to understand how to protect them. That moment shifted my perspective from simply using technology to wanting to secure it. As I began pursuing cybersecurity more seriously, I sought out coursework, certifications, and hands-on experiences that would strengthen my technical foundation. Through classes and independent learning, I developed skills in areas such as network security, ethical hacking, and risk analysis. I also explored practical applications through labs and simulated environments, which allowed me to think like both a defender and an attacker. This dual perspective has been critical in shaping how I approach cybersecurity problems. However, my journey has not been without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was the steep learning curve associated with cybersecurity. The field is vast and constantly evolving, which can feel overwhelming at times. Early on, I struggled with the technical depth required to fully understand concepts like encryption, system vulnerabilities, and advanced network configurations. To overcome this, I adopted a disciplined and consistent approach to learning. I broke complex topics into manageable parts, utilized online resources, and practiced regularly through hands-on exercises. Over time, what once seemed intimidating became areas of strength. Another challenge has been overcoming self-doubt, especially in such a competitive and fast-paced field. It is easy to compare oneself to others who may have more experience or technical expertise. To address this, I focused on my own growth and progress rather than comparison. I sought mentorship, collaborated with peers, and reminded myself that persistence and effort are just as important as prior knowledge. These experiences helped me build confidence and resilience. These challenges have significantly shaped my approach to cybersecurity. I have learned that success in this field requires not only technical skill but also adaptability, patience, and a willingness to continuously learn. Cybersecurity is not static, new threats emerge daily, and staying effective means staying curious and proactive. I approach problems with a mindset of continuous improvement, always asking how systems can be strengthened and how risks can be minimized. Looking ahead, I plan to continue developing my expertise through graduate study and professional experience. My goal is to contribute to building more secure systems and to help organizations better understand and manage cyber risks. I am particularly interested in roles that combine technical analysis with strategic decision-making, allowing me to make a meaningful impact on both system security and organizational resilience. Ultimately, my journey in cybersecurity has taught me that challenges are not barriers but opportunities for growth.
