Hackers Against Hate: Diversity in Information Security Scholarship

I’ve always been interested in the technology field, but what really drew me in was when I found out what the field of cybersecurity was. Currently, I am a freshman at the University of South Florida and I want to pursue a career where I can help protect individuals and different organizations from threats in the digital world. Behind every system and network, there are real people who rely on their information to stay safe and secured. Not only do I see cybersecurity as a career, but also a way to protect people and make sure they are safe from attacks online. This motivates me to keep learning and improving on a daily basis so that one day I can make a real difference in everyone’s digital safety. Outside of academics, I love to play tennis in my free time. I’ve played tennis since I was four years old and went on to compete on my high school varsity team. A knee injury led me to undergo surgery during my senior year of high school, which temporarily put my tennis journey on a hold. I had to learn the importance of recovery and patience. Though I am still unable to play to this day, tennis taught me how to stay disciplined and focused even when I am facing setbacks. It’s a sport that pushes me to improve mentally and physically, and continues to shape my mindset both on and off the court. My interest in cybersecurity started with a general curiosity in technology, but it quickly grew into something more meaningful. I love problem solving and figuring out how to stop issues before they actually happen. I always approach challenges with a positive mindset and I see them as opportunities to improve rather than obstacles. I hope to strengthen my skills and gain more experience that will prepare me for any challenges once I start my career in cybersecurity. If I receive this scholarship, I would use the funds to support my education in paying for tuition, textbooks, and any certifications that I need for my career. Online threats are constantly evolving and I want to be able to improve my skills to help me grow into someone who can make a meaningful impact in this field. This scholarship would not only support my education, but also give me the opportunity to pursue certifications and other learning opportunities that would strengthen my knowledge.
