Alex D. Sharpless II attended Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, NC, where he graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He attended college, majoring in Business Management and Information Technology. Unfortunately, at 21, his life was taken by homicide.

Alex was blessed with many talents. He excelled in athletics, playing varsity football, basketball and ran track for EWHS. He led the football team to regional finals and his passion for the game and respect for his teammates were always on display every game night. He was full of life and had an infectious smile. He never met a stranger and after just a few minutes of speaking to him, you were sure to call him one of your friends. Among his favorite past times, he enjoyed playing his PS4 games with friends and teaching his nephew, JoJo, how to dribble a basketball. Alex enjoyed spending quality time with those he loved most.

This scholarship aims to honor Alex D. Sharpless II and keep his memory alive by helping high school seniors attend college.

In today's complex and interconnected world, it is crucial to actively address social issues and work towards a more inclusive and empathetic society. As an individual committed to effecting positive change, I have dedicated myself to addressing the social issue of educational inequality by fostering empathy and promoting inclusivity through community engagement. Educational inequality is a pervasive social issue that limits opportunities for marginalized communities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and exclusion. To tackle this problem, I firmly believe that empathy and inclusivity must be cultivated at the grassroots level to create a more equitable educational landscape. I have initiated and actively participate in mentoring programs targeted towards underprivileged students. By volunteering my time and sharing my knowledge and experiences, I aim to inspire and empower these students, helping them realize their full potential despite socio-economic barriers. Through one-on-one mentorship, I provide guidance, support, and encouragement, emphasizing the importance of education and personal growth. In collaboration with local organizations, I organize educational workshops in underserved communities. These workshops cover a wide range of topics, including academic skills development, career guidance, and personal empowerment. By equipping individuals with valuable knowledge and practical skills, I aim to bridge the educational gap and empower them to pursue their dreams. To address the immediate needs of marginalized communities, I actively participate in community outreach programs. These programs involve providing resources such as school supplies, textbooks, and access to technology. By ensuring that students have the necessary tools to succeed academically, we remove barriers to education and empower them to pursue their aspirations. Recognizing the importance of raising awareness about educational inequality, I engage in advocacy campaigns. Through public speaking engagements, social media outreach, and collaboration with like-minded individuals and organizations, I aim to shed light on the issue and encourage others to join the cause. By fostering dialogue and promoting empathy, we can drive systemic change and create a more inclusive educational environment. To maximize impact, I actively seek partnerships with local schools, educational institutions, and community organizations. By pooling resources and expertise, we can develop comprehensive initiatives that address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Collaborative partnerships enable us to leverage each other's strengths, reach a broader audience, and create sustainable, long-term solutions. In my journey to address educational inequality, I prioritize continuous learning and personal growth. By staying informed about current research, best practices, and innovative approaches to education, I can refine my strategies and interventions. I attend workshops, conferences, and online courses to deepen my understanding of social issues, educational pedagogy, and community development, equipping myself with the knowledge necessary to effect meaningful change. Addressing social issues requires a collective effort rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and community engagement. By actively participating in mentoring programs, organizing educational workshops, engaging in community outreach, advocating for change, and fostering collaborative partnerships, I strive to address the social issue of educational inequality. Through these initiatives, I aim to empower marginalized communities, inspire a sense of hope, and create a more equitable educational landscape. By fostering empathy and promoting inclusivity, we can build a society where every individual has equal opportunities to thrive and contribute positively to the world.
