SuperDad Scholarship

Being a single father has been one of the hardest and most meaningful journeys of my life. Every day I balance working full time, going to school full time, and raising my child while working toward a better future for us. It is not easy, and there are many days when the responsibilities feel overwhelming, but my child gives me the strength to keep going. My life has been shaped by hardship from the very beginning. I grew up without a father because he left before I was born, so it was always just my mother, my sibling, and me. Growing up without that father figure taught me what it felt like to face life without certain support and made me realize the kind of parent I wanted to become for my own child. One of the hardest losses in my life was losing my sibling to cancer shortly after I graduated high school. They were one of the closest people in my life, and not having them there to see me graduate made that moment painful. What should have been one of the happiest days of my life felt incomplete because the person I wanted to celebrate with most was gone. That loss changed me deeply and reminded me how fragile life can be. On top of that, I have battled thyroid problems since birth and have had to rely on daily medication my entire life to survive. Living with a serious health condition has taught me resilience and made me stronger. Recently, my mother also found out she may have cancer, which has added even more uncertainty and fear to our lives. Through it all, I have learned that life can change at any moment, and that has pushed me to keep fighting for my future. Now as a single father, I carry that strength with me. My child is my biggest motivation. Everything I do, from working long hours to staying committed to school, is for them. I want to create stability and opportunities that I did not always have growing up. I want my child to know they can depend on me no matter what. The most rewarding part of being a father is seeing my child grow, learn, and trust me. The little moments like hearing them laugh, watching them reach milestones, or simply spending time together remind me why every sacrifice is worth it. Those moments keep me grounded and give me purpose. Education is important to me because it is the key to building a better life for both of us. I am currently pursuing my Associate degree in Criminal Justice and plan to continue my education to become a detective. My goal is to serve my community, seek justice, and create a stable future for my child. Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of balancing school, work, and parenthood. It would allow me to focus more on my education and continue moving forward toward my goals. More than financial support, this scholarship would be an investment in my child’s future and proof that all of the sacrifices I make today will lead to something better tomorrow.

Growing up with a single father has shaped who I am in ways I continue to recognize as I prepare to begin college. Raising a child alone comes with challenges that many people never see, and while my father’s journey has not always been easy, it has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, responsibility, and determination. Watching him balance work, finances, and parenting while managing his own health has given me a greater appreciation for the sacrifices that single parents often make. My father has worked hard to provide for me while also living with sickle cell disease. Even while facing chronic pain and long work hours, he continued to support our household and encourage me to pursue my education. Seeing someone continue to move forward despite personal challenges taught me that resilience is not about having a perfect life—it is about continuing to show up even when life is difficult. That lesson has stayed with me throughout high school and will continue to guide me as I begin college. Like many families, our relationship has not been without challenges. We have experienced disagreements and difficult moments, but those experiences have also helped me grow. They have taught me the importance of communication, patience, and understanding that people can carry burdens that are not always visible. Although we do not always see eye to eye, I recognize the responsibility my father has carried as a single parent and the effort it takes to raise a child while balancing so many other demands. As I prepare to attend the University at Albany to study nursing, I carry those lessons with me. My father’s resilience, along with my own experiences growing up in a single-parent household, has inspired me to pursue a career centered on compassion and service. I hope to become a registered nurse who advocates for patients, especially those living with chronic illnesses, and provides care that makes people feel respected and supported during difficult times. Receiving this scholarship would help ease the financial burden of college and allow me to focus on my education and clinical experiences. More importantly, it would represent an investment in a student whose journey has been shaped by perseverance, family, and the determination to create a brighter future. I hope to honor the sacrifices that brought me to this point by working hard, giving back to my community, and using my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
