Earlier this year, right as the students at Crestview High were preparing for Christmas break, my first period received a new student. She was not just new to the school, but to the state, having come all the way from Washington state to Florida, and, immediately, I could see the signs of anxiety and stress on her face. I had made the exact same expression myself years ago. After the divorce of my parents, I was forced to move from our home in Fort Walton to a townhouse in Crestview, and though the two were not nearly as far as where this new student had arrived from, I understood the feeling of being the odd one out, of wanting to fit in with the new crowd but being too shy to make the first move. So I made the first move. Our teacher had her sit next to me, and before the bell rung and she ran out without the slightest clue of the school layout, I offered to take her to her next class. She seemed appreciative, and was quite keen on getting to know me a bit better. It is times like these that show our empathy and initiative as humans. Simple acts that make one person's day brighter are carried forward, and light up the days of others as well. While it may have seemed insignificant to an outsider, that little interaction was the basis of our eventual friendship. Now, as we are nearing my graduation, I find myself looking for other favors and simple kindnesses I can do for others. Like has been a bit of a struggle for me, but I refuse to let it get in my way and ruin the person I would like to be.

The most important aspect of a relationship is communication. To create a dialogue is the first step in addressing this concern that is so restrictive on the African American community. Being half black, both sides of my family, even the white, stressed to me the importance of staying safe when it comes to law enforcement. I have seen the circumstances they fear come true, with people like me being unjustly incarcerated, and the only hope of freedom being a guilty plea. I have heard of the majority of the black side of my family have been incarcerated before, while the white side all have clean plates, even when they have done the same things. I have heard the ceaseless arguments about the issue and how to fix it. My proposition for positive change is no doubt similar to many that have been said before, but I have issue with phrasing them in my own way. One, the system desperately requires a revamp. Everyone knows about stereotypes and how the justice system can use them as a rulebook on who to and not to suspect. This is one of the biggest reasons why the relationship between them and colored communities is so strained. In my opinion, there seems to be some sort of reward system in place. If stereotyping did not generate some sort of reward, why, after so many years and so much progress, would it still be here? It is outdated, just like Jim Crow laws and segregation, and like them, it must be erased, such is the first step in my process. Two, get everything out in the open. No one solves anything by keeping everything to themselves. To start a dialogue and admit fault is one of the first steps of healing. Both sides have harsh biases, both sides are affected. It is better to let the wound heal than keep opening it up. Three, it is about time we changed the prison system. This may not go for all jails and prisons, but it is certain in my mind that absolutely zero should be privately owned. If justice is carried out by the government, every single part of the process should be. On top of this, I think prisons deserve better conditions. More funding and more opportunities means more rehabilitation. Our current system has people in a loop. From the get-go, people of color are discouraged and fought on their way towards success, and this can easily send them into crime. When the law gets its hands on many, they do not change. They do not see a better life on the horizon, nor does it give them an opportunity to, and many that have previously been incarcerated end up back in the system. Deterrence is wonderful, but it does not help those who do not see any other way, rehabilitation does, and true rehabilitation should be an option for everyone behind bars. Thank you so much for reading my essay, and I sincerely hope I will be considered.

Diverse representation in STEM careers is essential because science and innovation should reflect and serve the needs of all communities. When people from different backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences contribute to these fields, they bring new perspectives that lead to better problem-solving, more inclusive research, and more equitable outcomes. As a Black woman pursuing a career in pharmacy, I am motivated not only by my passion for science, but also by the opportunity to help increase representation in spaces where voices like mine have historically been underrepresented. Throughout my academic journey, I have often been aware of how few people who look like me are present in advanced science and healthcare pathways. This lack of representation can create barriers for students who may struggle to see themselves belonging in these fields. When young people do not see professionals who share their background, it can be difficult to imagine success as something that is attainable. Representation matters because it provides visibility, encouragement, and a sense of belonging for the next generation. By pursuing a STEM career, I hope to become part of that visible support system for others. Diversity in STEM is also important because it directly affects the quality and equity of scientific research and healthcare. Different communities experience unique environmental, social, and medical challenges that may be overlooked when research lacks diverse perspectives. In healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences, where I plan to build my career, inclusive representation helps ensure that treatments, medications, and healthcare policies are developed with the needs of all populations in mind. Without diverse voices in research and decision-making roles, disparities in care and access are more likely to persist. My identity as a black woman has shaped both my challenges and my motivation. As someone from an underrepresented and low-income background, I have experienced moments of feeling overlooked or underestimated. Rather than discouraging me, these experiences have strengthened my determination to succeed. I want to demonstrate that talent, curiosity, and dedication exist in every community, even when opportunities are not equally distributed. By entering a STEM field, I hope to challenge stereotypes and help create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for others. In addition to representation, I am driven by a desire to give back to my community. Many underserved communities face barriers to healthcare access, education, and scientific resources. Through a career in healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences, I hope to contribute to improving access to information, treatment, and support. My goal is not only to succeed personally, but also to use my education to help address disparities and improve health outcomes for those who are often overlooked. Increasing diversity in STEM is not just about fairness; it is about strengthening the future of science and innovation. When people from different backgrounds are included, the field becomes more creative, more effective, and more responsive to real-world needs. As a black woman entering STEM, I hope to be part of that progress, serving as both a contributor to scientific advancement and a source of inspiration for others who are still searching for a place where they belong.

One person I deeply admire is my high school French teacher, Mr. Pierre, who consistently encouraged me to pursue opportunities that challenged me academically and personally. Throughout my high school experience, this he recognized my interests and goals, and was constantly pushing me to consider paths I had not initially considered. His guidance and belief in my abilities played a huge role in motivating me to pursue pharmacy and explore possibilities that align with my long-term goals. During my time as a student, most as a freshman, I often struggled with self-confidence and uncertainty. Coming from a low-income family, the idea of attending college sometimes felt overwhelming and intimidating. However, Mr. Pierre made a lasting impact by showing me that education is not just about obtaining a degree but about expanding opportunities, developing critical thinking skills, and pushing through despite the circumstances. He introduced me to a pharmaceutical program that his wife was involved in between NWFSC and FAMU that would help prepare me for success after graduation. His consistent encouragement helped me realize my potential and believe that my success was not only possible but achievable. In addition to inspiring my educational goals, this teacher motivated me to participate in activities such as speech and debate or mock trial. He would often call me argumentative, and suggested I needed an outlet to share my ideas. Initially, the idea of speaking in front of others was intimidating. While I have always been someone who prefers the spontaneity that can be found in arguments, I am also quite shy around those I have never met. However, my teacher showed that speech and debate are not only about performance but also about learning how to communicate effectively and advocate for ideas with confidence. Taking part in speech and debate or mock trial provides valuable skills that extend far beyond competition. These activities encourage research, logical reasoning, and the ability to analyze complex issues from multiple perspectives. For someone interested in healthcare and science, these skills are incredibly important. Healthcare professionals must communicate clearly with patients, collaborate with colleagues, and advocate for patient care decisions. By engaging in speech and debate, I am developing the communication and analytical abilities that will support my future career. My motivation to participate in these activities also comes from a desire to grow personally. Stepping outside of my comfort zone allows me to build confidence and self-esteem. Each opportunity to present ideas or defend an argument helps me become more comfortable expressing myself and engaging with others in meaningful discussions. These experiences are helping me become a stronger student and future professional. The encouragement I received from Mr. Pierre still continues to influence my academic journey. His belief in me and my potential inspired me to pursue higher education and challenge myself through activities that develop essential life skills. By participating in speech and debate, I am honoring his guidance while preparing myself for a future where communication, confidence, and critical thinking will allow me to make a positive impact in pharmacy.

I have chosen to pursue a degree in pharmaceuticals due to both my personal interests and the academic opportunities available to me. Since I was little, I have always been fascinated by nature, particularly the aspects that people often overlook. The tiny insects that live along the forest floor, the fungi bursting from the soil, and the striking warning colors displayed by some of the most dangerous flora and fauna have always captured my curiosity. I am especially intrigued by how plants, animals, and microorganisms have evolved complex chemical defenses to protect themselves from predators and environmental threats. The idea that these natural compounds can be studied and potentially transformed into life-saving medications is incredibly inspiring to me. Pharmaceuticals allow me to combine my passion for science, nature, and healthcare into a career that can directly improve lives. My decision was further influenced by an educational opportunity that was introduced to me by one of my high school teachers. Through dual enrollment, I learned that the college I was attending offered a pharmaceutical program in partnership with Florida A&M University. This program created a structured and accessible pathway into a professional healthcare degree. For several years, my teacher consistently encouraged me to explore this opportunity, recognizing how well it aligned with my interests and abilities. Although my original long-term goal involved veterinary medicine, I realized that pharmaceutical sciences would still allow me to pursue my love for biology and medicine while opening doors to broader healthcare applications. Accepting this opportunity required flexibility and trust in my potential, but it ultimately strengthened my determination to succeed in a healthcare-focused field. As a biracial woman from a low-income background, representation and accessibility in healthcare are deeply personal issues to me. Throughout my life, I have experienced moments where I felt overlooked or underestimated due to my identity and financial circumstances. These experiences have motivated me to work harder and to prove that individuals from underrepresented backgrounds belong in professional and scientific spaces. By pursuing a career in pharmaceuticals, I hope to inspire others, particularly young women of color, to pursue higher education and careers in healthcare and STEM fields. Visibility matters, and I want others to see that success is achievable regardless of background. In addition to serving as representation, I hope to contribute to healthcare by promoting accessibility and patient advocacy. Pharmaceuticals play a critical role in modern medicine, but access to medications remains a major challenge for many families. In fact, even I have had to skip out on my medications when my dad and I did not have enough money to purchase it. I aspire to be part of efforts that improve medication availability, patient education, and equitable healthcare distribution. Whether through research, community outreach, or patient support roles, I want to help ensure that individuals receive the treatments they need to live healthier lives. My educational journey is also motivated by a desire to support my family, who have sacrificed greatly to help me pursue my goals. Neither side of my family has experienced significant financial stability, and their encouragement has fueled my determination to succeed. By earning a degree in pharmaceuticals and establishing a stable career in healthcare, I hope to give back to them while also serving my community. Through dedication, representation, and compassionate care, I aim to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the healthcare field.

My name is Amya Sykes, and my life was completely altered the day my mother moved out and away from my life. I had been living with split custody before then, with two weeks with my mother, then with my father, as their lives continued on like nothing had happened. It never felt that way to me. Just like cats tend to find one person and prefer them over others, I was that way with my mom. She listened to me, understood me, and overall felt like the only person I could ever speak my mind to. That is why is hurt even more when she was gone Since then, I have been living with my dad. It was tough at first. We did not have the greatest of relationships, as my mother had told me all sorts of things about him and I was already quite scared of him. His style of parenting was much different, and the trauma I had endured due to the divorce had left me frightened of practically all men, especially him. It took time, but we got through it. As my wounds slowly began to heal, I found myself truly enjoying his company. Sure, I felt my heart stop when he raised his voice, but I could also find myself laughing along with him when he joked or crying to him when I was overwhelmed. My mother never really left my life. Though she was hundreds of miles away, I tried my hardest to find the time to call her at least once a week. I wanted to hear her voice and interact with my sister, and no distance could possibly take that away from me. Still, she refrained from helping with the financial situation my dad and I had to face, and getting in contact with her could be difficult. At times, it even felt like she was ignoring me. Often, I felt that she had picked my stepdad over me, but this never discouraged me. I still had my dad and the endless support that he would give me no matter what. I began dual enrollment in my junior year of high school, and the amount of encouragement that my father gave to me was tremendous. He would often sit down and listen to me when I talked about my college classes, help me choose the best courses for the semester, or give me warnings about procrastination. It was during our time together that I realized just how much we had in common, just how many tears he had shed for my circumstances, just how much he cared. I realized that, even without my person right by my side, I could still survive and rely on others. Thank you for reading my story.

Throughout my life, animals have been a source of comfort, emotional support, and stability, especially during difficult periods marked by stress and financial hardship. While animals helped me cope with personal challenges, I also noticed that access to safe and therapeutic interactions with animals is often limited, particularly for individuals struggling with mental health challenges. To address this problem on a personal level, I began researching ways animal interaction can improve emotional well-being and brainstorming ideas for spaces that safely connect people with animals. If I had the funding and resources, I would create a community-based animal wellness and therapy center designed to support both animal welfare and human mental health. This center would function as a hybrid animal shelter, veterinary care facility, and therapeutic interaction space. One major problem it would address is the lack of affordable mental health support and the overcrowding of animal shelters. The facility would provide temporary housing and medical care for rescue animals while also offering supervised animal interaction programs for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or loneliness. By combining these services, I believe the center would create a mutually beneficial environment where animals receive care, socialization, and rehabilitation while individuals receive emotional support through safe, structured animal interactions. The first phase of this plan would involve securing a safe, accessible location and building partnerships with licensed veterinarians, animal behavior specialists, and mental health professionals. The veterinary section of the facility would focus on providing preventative care, surgical services, and rehabilitation for rescued or surrendered animals. This would help reduce overcrowding in local shelters by ensuring animals are healthy, adoptable, and emotionally stable. The second phase would involve designing therapeutic programs that allow individuals to interact with animals in structured and supervised environments. These programs would include guided animal bonding sessions, educational workshops about responsible pet ownership, and volunteer opportunities that allow participants to assist with animal care. Each program would be carefully designed to prioritize the welfare and comfort of both the animals and participants. For individuals unable to afford traditional therapy, these programs could serve as an accessible supplemental support system. The final phase of the project would focus on sustainability and community outreach. The center would rely on adoption programs, community fundraising, educational events, and partnerships with local schools and healthcare providers. Educational programs would promote compassion toward animals while raising awareness about the connection between animal welfare and mental health. Over time, this initiative could expand into mobile outreach services that bring therapy animals to hospitals, schools, and underserved communities. This project represents more than a facility. It represents a solution rooted in empathy and community support. My passion for veterinary medicine drives my desire to ensure animals receive proper care and dignity, while my personal experiences have shown me the extensive emotional healing animals can provide. If given the opportunity and resources to create this center, I believe it could reduce animal homelessness, improve access to mental health support, and strengthen community connections. In combining animal welfare, veterinary care, and therapeutic interaction, this initiative would address two significant societal challenges simultaneously. Creating a space where animals and people heal together reflects my long-term goal of using science, compassion, and innovation to make a meaningful and lasting difference.

Paying for higher education is one of the greatest challenges I anticipate facing as I pursue my academic and professional goals. As a future veterinary student, I am aware that my chosen field often requires extensive schooling, which can result in significant student loan debt. Rather than allowing this to discourage me, I have taken a proactive and disciplined approach to reducing my financial burden. One of the most important strategies I have implemented is committing myself to applying for at least three scholarships every day. Applying to scholarships daily requires organization, time management, and persistence. Many scholarship applications require essays, recommendation requests, and detailed documentation, which can be both time-consuming and mentally demanding. However, I view this process as an investment in my future. By consistently dedicating time to scholarship applications, I increase my opportunities to receive financial support while also strengthening my writing and self-reflection. Each application allows me to refine my goals, articulate my aspirations, and better understand the impact I hope to make through my education. In addition to scholarship applications, I am committed to maintaining strong academic performance. A high GPA not only strengthens my chances of acceptance into competitive veterinary programs but also makes me a more competitive candidate for merit-based financial aid opportunities. I recognize that academic dedication directly contributes to financial stability by opening doors to additional funding sources. My focus on academic excellence is both a personal goal and a practical strategy for minimizing future loan debt. I am also planning to pursue part-time employment opportunities that will allow me to contribute toward educational expenses and personal savings. Even small, consistent contributions can reduce reliance on student loans over time. Beyond financial benefits, part-time work will help me build professional skills such as communication, customer service, and responsibility, all of which will support my long-term career development. Another important aspect of my financial planning involves learning responsible budgeting and financial literacy. I actively seek information about managing expenses, avoid unnecessary debt, and plan for long-term financial obligations. Understanding how to manage finances early in my academic journey will allow me to make informed decisions about loan borrowing and repayment options in the future. My motivation to minimize student loan debt is closely connected to my career goals. I aspire to become a veterinarian and eventually support community initiatives such as funding or supporting animal shelters that also promote mental and emotional well-being through human-animal interaction. Reducing my debt will provide me with greater financial flexibility, allowing me to focus on service-oriented opportunities rather than being limited by financial strain. Addressing student loan debt requires discipline, planning, and perseverance. By applying to scholarships consistently, maintaining strong academic performance, pursuing employment opportunities, and building financial literacy, I am taking meaningful steps toward reducing my future financial burden. These efforts reflect my determination not only to achieve my educational goals but also to create a stable foundation that will allow me to give back to my community and make a lasting impact through my career.

One of the most meaningful relationships in my life has been the bond I share with my father. Our relationship has evolved over time, and his influence has shaped my values, resilience, and the way I form connections with others. Through his guidance, support, and the lessons he has shared both directly and indirectly, I have learned the importance of patience, understanding, and unwavering loyalty in relationships. My father served in the United States Navy before I was born, and while I did not experience that chapter of his life firsthand, the discipline and perseverance he developed during his service have been reflected in how he raised and supported our family. Growing up, I admired his ability to remain calm and composed during difficult situations. He often approached challenges with careful thought rather than immediate reaction, teaching me that strength is not always loud and visible, but often quiet and steady. Observing this shaped my own approach to conflict and communication, encouraging me to listen carefully and respond thoughtfully when interacting with others. Beyond his resilience, my father has always demonstrated a strong sense of compassion. He consistently emphasizes the importance of treating people with kindness and respect, regardless of differences in background or perspective. This lesson has stayed with me throughout my academic and personal experiences. As someone who sometimes struggles with social communication due to autism, his encouragement helped me understand that meaningful relationships are built through authenticity rather than perfection. He reminded me that it is okay to be different and that genuine connection comes from honesty and empathy. His support gave me confidence to embrace my individuality while still striving to understand and support those around me. Our relationship has also taught me the importance of reliability and trust. My father has consistently shown that being present for others, even during difficult times, strengthens relationships and builds lasting bonds. Whether through simple daily conversations or providing guidance during moments of uncertainty, he demonstrated that showing up for people can have a profound impact. This has influenced the way I approach friendships, academic teamwork, and community involvement. I strive to be someone others can depend on, offering support, patience, and encouragement just like he does for the community. Due to my father’s influence, I have developed a deeper appreciation for understanding people beyond surface-level interactions. I recognize that everyone carries unique experiences and challenges that shape how they communicate and behave. This awareness encourages me to approach relationships with empathy and openness, allowing me to form connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds. In academic settings, this has helped me collaborate effectively with peers by valuing their perspectives and fostering inclusive environments where everyone feels heard and respected. Looking toward my future career in veterinary medicine, the lessons I have learned from my father continue to shape how I plan to interact with both clients and colleagues. Veterinary care requires not only medical knowledge but also strong interpersonal skills, as veterinarians often support pet owners during emotionally difficult situations. By applying patience, compassion, and clear communication, I hope to build trusting relationships with clients while advocating for the well-being of their animals. My father’s example has shown me that meaningful relationships are built through consistency, empathy, and respect, and these are qualities that I intend to carry into my professional life. Ultimately, my relationship with my father has helped shape the person I am today by teaching me resilience, compassion, and the importance of authentic connection. Through his example, I have learned that strong relationships are not defined by perfection, but by understanding, trust, and the willingness to support one another through life’s challenges. These lessons continue to guide how I build relationships and contribute positively to the communities and environments I am part of.

Animal care and welfare play a foundational role in conservation efforts, as the well-being of individual animals is inseparable from the survival of entire species and ecosystems. Conservation is often discussed in terms of habitats, populations, and biodiversity, but at its core, it begins with ethical, compassionate treatment of animals. Ensuring proper care, medical attention, and humane living conditions allows animals not only to survive but thrive, which is essential for long-term conservation success. Animal welfare directly impacts conservation by supporting healthy populations capable of reproduction and adaptation. Injured, ill, or stressed animals are less likely to survive in the wild or contribute positively to breeding programs. Wildlife rehabilitation centers, sanctuaries, and zoological conservation programs rely heavily on proper animal care to treat injuries caused by habitat loss, climate change, and human interference. Veterinary medicine and animal husbandry therefore act as bridges between immediate care and broader conservation goals, helping animals recover and, when possible, return to their natural environments. Additionally, animal care plays a critical role in conservation research and education. Monitoring animal health provides valuable insight into environmental conditions, emerging diseases, and ecosystem imbalances. For example, changes in animal behavior or health can signal pollution, climate stress, or declining food sources. By prioritizing welfare, conservationists are better equipped to make informed decisions that protect both animals and the environments they depend on. Compassionate care also fosters public trust and engagement, encouraging communities to support conservation initiatives rather than view them as distant or impersonal efforts. I envision contributing to the field of conservation through a career in veterinary medicine, with a particular interest in veterinary surgery and animal welfare. As a future veterinarian, I hope to work at the intersection of clinical care and conservation, whether through wildlife rehabilitation, conservation-focused veterinary programs, or partnerships with animal shelters that support at-risk species. My goal is to use medical expertise not only to treat individual animals, but to contribute to larger efforts that preserve species and ecosystems. Beyond direct medical care, I hope to advocate for ethical treatment and accessibility within animal welfare spaces. Conservation should not be limited to remote wildlife reserves, but should also include community-based efforts that promote responsible animal care, education, and empathy. I believe that fostering compassion for animals at a local level helps build a culture that values conservation globally. When people understand the emotional, ecological, and intrinsic value of animals, they are more likely to protect them. Ultimately, animal care and welfare are not separate from conservation, but they are its heartbeat. By prioritizing the health and dignity of animals, conservation efforts become more sustainable, humane, and effective. Through my future work, I hope to contribute to a field that recognizes animals not merely as populations to be managed, but as living beings deserving of care, respect, and protection.

Resilience, to me, is not just about enduring hardship. It is about choosing to be yourself in a world that often encourages conformity. One of the most important ways I have shown resilience is through how I present myself and how I move through the world as an autistic individual. By embracing my identity openly and unapologetically, I hope to inspire others to do the same. Growing up autistic meant learning early that the world was not always designed with me in mind. Social expectations, unspoken rules, and sensory overload often made everyday situations more challenging. I quickly became aware that standing out could invite misunderstanding or judgment. For a long time, the pressure to blend in felt overwhelming. Yet, over time, I realized that suppressing who I was only made me feel smaller and more disconnected from myself. My personal style became one of the first ways I reclaimed my confidence. I dress in a way that reflects who I am: colorful, alternative, and expressive. While some people see this as flashy or unconventional, for me it is a form of communication and self-affirmation. Choosing to dress authentically took courage, especially in environments where being different can draw attention. Each time I stepped outside dressed as myself, I practiced resilience by prioritizing self-respect over external approval. Beyond appearance, I strive to live with honesty and openness about my autism. Rather than hiding my differences, I embrace them as part of what makes me thoughtful, observant, and empathetic. I approach others with patience and kindness, knowing how isolating it can feel to be misunderstood. By showing up authentically, I have seen people around me become more comfortable expressing their own individuality. Friends and peers have shared that seeing me confidently be myself helped them feel less alone or less afraid of judgment. Inspiring others does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it comes from quiet consistency like continuing to exist openly in a world that may not always understand you. My resilience has shown others that there is strength in being different and that identity does not need to be hidden to be valid. I have learned that authenticity can be an invitation: an invitation for others to unmask, to express themselves, and to believe that they belong. This resilience also shapes my future goals. As someone pursuing a career in veterinary science, I want to create spaces where both people and animals feel safe, respected, and understood. I carry with me the belief that compassion begins with acceptance, and that embracing differences, whether neurological, personal, or physical, makes communities stronger. By choosing to live authentically as an autistic individual, I have learned that resilience is not about changing who you are to fit the world. It is about standing firmly in yourself and showing others that they are allowed to do the same.

My journey in STEM has been shaped not only by my academic interests, but by how I choose to express myself. My personal style tends to fall into what many would call “pastel goth”; a blend of softness and edge, dark themes paired with bright colors. I am often described as flashy or unconventional, and while that presentation may seem at odds with traditional expectations of STEM students, it has played a meaningful role in shaping my confidence, resilience, and approach to science. In academic and scientific spaces, there is often an unspoken expectation of conformity. STEM is frequently associated with neutrality, seriousness, and sameness, leaving little room for visible individuality. As someone whose appearance stands out, I have faced moments of being underestimated or assumed to be less capable because I do not fit the typical image of a “science student.” These assumptions were subtle but impactful, making me aware that I would often need to prove my competence before my ideas were taken seriously. Over time, I learned to view this challenge not as a limitation, but as a source of strength. Embracing my alternative identity taught me self-assurance and perseverance. I learned how to stand confidently in who I am while remaining focused on my goals. My style became a reminder that intelligence and professionalism are not defined by appearance, and that passion for science can coexist with creativity and individuality. My interest in STEM, specifically veterinary science, grew from curiosity, compassion, and personal experience. I am drawn to veterinary medicine because it combines biology, problem-solving, and hands-on care with empathy and ethical responsibility. Just as my personal identity blends contrast, veterinary science blends precision with compassion. It requires adaptability, observation, and creative thinking, all of which are qualities I have strengthened through navigating spaces where I stand out. Facing judgment based on appearance has also deepened my empathy. It has made me more attentive to others who feel overlooked or misunderstood, whether they are people or animals. This perspective influences how I approach my future career. I plan to pursue veterinary sciences with the goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon, and I hope to create environments where both clients and colleagues feel respected regardless of how they present themselves. In the future, I want to contribute to my field not only through technical skill, but through inclusivity. I hope to demonstrate that STEM benefits from diversity in all forms: background, thought, and self-expression. I envision a career where professionalism is defined by competence, compassion, and integrity, not conformity. By remaining true to myself, I aim to help broaden perceptions of who belongs in science. My alternative identity has shaped my STEM journey by teaching me resilience, confidence, and authenticity. Rather than hiding who I am, I have learned to let it coexist with my academic ambitions. In doing so, I hope to contribute to a future in STEM that is more inclusive, creative, and reflective of the diverse world it serves.

My personal background has shaped my resilience, my ambition, and my deep commitment to creating positive change through science. As a student from a BIPOC background, I have grown up navigating not only personal and financial adversity, but also the quiet pressure of knowing that opportunities in STEM are not always equally accessible. These experiences have taught me perseverance, empathy, and the importance of using education as a tool to uplift both myself and my peers. One of the most significant challenges I have faced has been financial instability. Growing up in a household where money was a constant concern meant that uncertainty was part of everyday life. Conversations about finances were often tense, and the fear of not having enough security, enough resources, or enough opportunity was always present. From a young age, I learned how fragile stability can be and how deeply financial stress can affect emotional well-being. While these circumstances were difficult, they also instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility and determination to build a better future. Financial hardship forced me to mature early. I became acutely aware that my path forward would require careful planning, discipline, and resilience. Higher education, while something I deeply value, often felt financially out of reach. The cost of tuition, textbooks, and long-term professional training created barriers that were intimidating and, at times, discouraging. However, rather than allowing these challenges to define my limits, I chose to let them fuel my motivation. I learned that perseverance is not about avoiding hardship, but about continuing forward through it. During these difficult periods, animals played a vital role in my life. They were a consistent source of comfort and stability when my environment felt unpredictable. Caring for them gave me a sense of purpose and control, and sparked my curiosity about biology, health, and the science behind healing. This connection ultimately led me to discover my passion for veterinary science, a STEM field that merges scientific rigor with compassion and service. What excites me most about veterinary science is its interdisciplinary nature. It draws upon biology, chemistry, anatomy, and problem-solving while also requiring empathy, communication, and ethical responsibility. As someone who has experienced instability firsthand, I am drawn to a profession where scientific knowledge is used directly to reduce suffering and improve quality of life. I plan to pursue a degree in veterinary sciences with the goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon, a role that demands precision, resilience, and lifelong learning. As a minority student entering science, representation matters deeply to me. I want to succeed not only for myself, but to demonstrate that students from underrepresented and financially limited backgrounds belong in scientific spaces. Too often, systemic barriers prevent talented individuals from pursuing these careers. Through my education and future work, I hope to help break those barriers and create pathways for others to follow. My long-term goals extend beyond my individual career. One of my aspirations is to fund and support an animal shelter that also serves as a mental-health-supportive space for the community. I have personally experienced the emotional benefits of being around animals and how their presence can ease anxiety, provide comfort, and foster connection. By combining veterinary science with mental health awareness, I hope to create a space where both animals and people can heal. This vision reflects my belief that STEM should be used not only to innovate, but to address real human and community needs. Education represents opportunity, empowerment, and the ability to give back. Despite financial challenges, I remain committed to my academic goals because I understand that knowledge is the foundation for long-term change. With the proper support, I can continue developing the skills necessary to serve my community ethically and effectively. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of higher education, allowing me to focus fully on learning, research, and professional growth. My journey has not been defined by ease, but by perseverance. The adversity I have faced, particularly financial struggle, has shaped me into someone determined, compassionate, and purpose-driven. Through a career in veterinary science, I hope to use STEM to create meaningful impact, uplift underserved communities, and provide healing where it is most needed. With continued education and support, I am committed to transforming my challenges into a future of service, representation, and lasting change. This scholarship would not only mean belief in my vision, but also support for a young minority with a mission to help those around her. We have all seen the things that so many people go through in this world, and my hope is to make life just a little bit easier for my community, and inspire others to do the same. Too many times, I have seen minorities fall into the hands of a cruel justice system or into paths laid by their role models who may have not been the right choice to follow. For me, winning means breaking a cycle and showing those around me that anything is possible with enough perseverance. Thank you.

My academic and professional goals are rooted in a desire to serve others through knowledge, compassion, and perseverance. I plan to pursue a degree in veterinary sciences with the long-term goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon. This path allows me to combine my passion for animals with my interest in science, problem-solving, and healthcare. More importantly, it gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of both animals and the people who care for them. My motivation to pursue this career was shaped by my personal experiences. Growing up in a household affected by emotional strain and financial instability, I learned early on how important support and stability can be. During difficult moments, animals became my source of comfort. Caring for them taught me patience, empathy, and responsibility, all qualities that continue to guide my academic goals and personal values. These experiences inspired me to choose a profession centered on healing and service. Although I have not yet had formal opportunities to give back through structured programs, I have contributed to my community in meaningful, personal ways. I consistently care for my own pets and support the people around me by listening, helping, and showing compassion when others are struggling. I understand that service does not always require a title or organization; sometimes it begins with small, intentional actions that improve someone’s day or ease a burden. These moments reinforced my belief that kindness and care can have a lasting impact. My desire to give back extends beyond individual actions and into my future goals. One of my long-term aspirations is to fund and support an animal shelter that also promotes mental well-being for people in the community. I have experienced firsthand how powerful the presence of animals can be during times of emotional distress. I want to create a space where people can find comfort, healing, and connection while also supporting animals in need. This vision reflects my belief that helping animals and helping people are deeply connected. My academic goals are driven by a strong sense of responsibility, not only to improve my own life, but to uplift others. Education represents opportunity, stability, and the ability to create change. By committing myself to rigorous study and continuous growth, I hope to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to serve my community effectively and ethically. Giving back has inspired me to think beyond personal success and focus on long-term impact. My experiences taught me that even in challenging circumstances, compassion and dedication can create meaningful change. Through my education and future career, I plan to contribute to a world where care, understanding, and service are at the center of progress.

This opportunity is deeply meaningful to me because it represents more than financial support, but it reflects belief in perseverance, purpose, and faith as a source of strength. My journey has not been an easy one, but through every challenge I have faced, my faith has served as an anchor, guiding me forward when the path felt uncertain. Growing up in a household shaped by emotional strain and financial instability, I often felt overwhelmed by circumstances beyond my control. Arguments, stress, and the constant worry of making ends meet created an environment where peace was hard to find. During those moments, faith became my refuge. It reminded me that hardship was not the end of my story, and that even when I felt alone, I was never truly without support. Faith gave me hope when motivation was difficult to find and taught me to trust that perseverance would lead me somewhere meaningful. One of the most important lessons my faith instilled in me was resilience. I learned that setbacks are not signs of failure, but opportunities for growth. Instead of allowing adversity to define me, I leaned on faith to help me develop patience, compassion, and strength. It encouraged me to keep striving academically even when financial limitations made the future feel uncertain. Each small achievement: earning strong grades, setting clear goals, and continuing forward despite doubt became a triumph rooted in belief and determination. My faith has also shaped my sense of purpose. It taught me that success is not measured solely by personal achievement, but by the positive impact one has on others. This belief strongly influences my career aspirations. I plan to pursue veterinary sciences with the goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon, a profession that allows me to serve both animals and the people who love them. Caring for animals has always brought me peace, and I view this path as a calling; one that aligns compassion, science, and service. Looking toward the future, I intend to use my faith as a guiding force in reaching even greater heights. I hope to one day fund and support an animal shelter that also promotes mental well-being for people in my community. I believe faith calls us to be sources of comfort and healing, and I want to create a space where individuals can find solace, hope, and connection through animals just as I once did. This opportunity would help relieve the financial barriers standing between me and my educational goals, allowing me to focus fully on learning and growth. With faith as my foundation, I am committed to continuing forward with integrity, gratitude, and purpose. My journey has taught me that with unwavering belief and perseverance, even the most difficult beginnings can lead to meaningful and impactful futures.

Dr. Jack Terry’s story is one of extraordinary resilience, determination, and purpose. As a child who survived unimaginable loss during the Holocaust, he rebuilt his life from nothing- without family, without formal education, and without even knowing the language of his new country. Yet he went on to become a scientist, a physician, a military officer, and a mentor who devoted his later years to educating others. His life reminds me that adversity does not define a person’s limits; it reveals their strength. While my challenges differ greatly from those Dr. Terry endured, his story resonates deeply with me because it reflects the power of perseverance through hardship. Growing up, my home life was marked by emotional strain and financial instability. Arguments were frequent, and the stress of living paycheck to paycheck created an environment where uncertainty was constant. From a young age, I learned what it meant to feel alone even when surrounded by others, and I learned how heavy responsibility can feel when resources are limited. During those difficult years, animals became my refuge. Caring for them gave me comfort and stability when my world felt unpredictable. They taught me patience, empathy, and resilience; qualities that helped me cope with my circumstances and grow stronger through them. Like Dr. Terry, I learned that even when life strips away security, purpose can still be built through persistence and compassion. What inspires me most about Dr. Terry’s life is not only his academic success, but how he chose to give back. After surviving trauma and rebuilding his future, he dedicated himself to helping others understand the past and find hope. That commitment to service is something I deeply admire and strive to emulate. His example shows that education is not simply a personal achievement, but a tool for healing, leadership, and positive change. My own experiences have shaped my academic and career goals. I plan to major in veterinary sciences with the long-term goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon. This path allows me to combine science, discipline, and compassion in service of others. Beyond my career, I hope to give back by funding and supporting an animal shelter that also promotes mental well-being for people. I know firsthand how powerful the presence of animals can be in times of emotional distress, and I want to create a space where both animals and people can heal together. Dr. Jack Terry’s life teaches that survival alone is not the end of the journey; what matters is what we do with the life we rebuild. My adversity has shaped me into someone determined, empathetic, and driven to serve. Through my education and future career, I hope to honor that lesson by giving back to my community and making a meaningful difference, just as Dr. Terry did.

The challenges I have faced throughout my life have shaped me into someone resilient, empathetic, and determined. Growing up in a household marked by financial instability and emotional strain, I learned early on that success is rarely handed to you, but it is earned through perseverance. Frequent arguments at home and constant worry about finances created an environment where uncertainty was the norm, but those experiences pushed me to mature quickly and take responsibility for my future. Financial hardship has been one of the most persistent challenges I have had to overcome. My family often lived paycheck to paycheck, making even basic necessities a source of stress. There were times when education felt like a distant goal, not because I lacked motivation, but because the cost felt overwhelming. Watching my parents struggle financially taught me the value of hard work and careful planning, and it strengthened my resolve to pursue a career that would allow me to be both financially stable and fulfilled. These challenges also deeply influenced my sense of empathy. During moments of loneliness and stress, animals became my source of comfort and stability. Caring for them gave me purpose and taught me patience, responsibility, and compassion; qualities that continue to shape who I am today. Those experiences inspired my goal of becoming a veterinarian, a profession that combines science, service, and care. I want to dedicate my life to helping animals while supporting the people who depend on them. Despite the obstacles I have faced, I have remained committed to my education. I view learning as my pathway to a better future, not only for myself, but for the community I hope to serve. I plan to major in veterinary sciences and eventually specialize in surgery, a field that requires rigorous training and dedication. The cost of higher education, however, presents a significant barrier. Tuition, textbooks, and living expenses add up quickly, and without financial support, pursuing my goals would place a heavy burden on my family. This scholarship would ease that burden and allow me to focus fully on my academic and professional development. It would give me the opportunity to dedicate my time to studying, gaining hands-on experience, and preparing for a career in veterinary medicine. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to achieving a future built on stability, purpose, and service. With this support, I am confident that I can turn the challenges I’ve overcome into a meaningful and lasting impact.

I was not alive when my father served in the United States Navy, yet his service has been a quiet but constant presence throughout my life. I did not grow up hearing daily stories of ships and deployments, but I grew up surrounded by the values the Navy instilled in him: discipline, resilience, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. These lessons were passed down not through direct experience, but through the stories he shared and the way he lived. One story he told me often was about his first long deployment at sea. He described the endless stretch of water, the strict routines, and the moments of exhaustion that came with life aboard a ship. What stayed with me most was not the hardship itself, but how he spoke about it. He explained that there were days when he felt overwhelmed, yet he learned to rely on his crew as a second family. In an environment where mistakes could have serious consequences, trust and teamwork were essential. That idea, that no one succeeds alone, has stayed with me ever since. My father also told me about the quieter moments: standing watch under a night sky filled with stars, sharing laughter with fellow sailors during brief moments of rest, and learning how to find calm even in high-pressure situations. Those stories painted a picture of strength balanced with humility. They taught me that courage does not always look dramatic; sometimes it looks like showing up, doing your job well, and supporting the people around you, even when it is difficult. Although my father’s service ended before I was born, its influence shaped the way he raised me. He emphasized accountability, respect, and perseverance; values rooted in his time in the Navy. When life felt overwhelming, he reminded me that challenges are temporary and that consistency and effort matter more than fear. His lessons helped me develop resilience during difficult moments in my own life and encouraged me to face obstacles with determination rather than avoidance. One of the most important things my father taught me was service beyond oneself. He never spoke of his time in the Navy as a sacrifice to be praised, but as a responsibility he was proud to carry. That mindset influenced my own desire to help others, particularly through my goal of becoming a veterinarian. Just as he served his country, I hope to serve my community by caring for animals and supporting the people who love them. Though I never saw my father in uniform, his Navy service lives on in the values he passed down. His stories remind me that service is not only about where you go or what you do, it is about the character you build and the impact you leave behind.

To me, STEM is not just a collection of disciplines; it is a way of understanding, questioning, and improving the world around us. My curiosity about science began quietly, through observation rather than textbooks. As a child, I found comfort in watching birds in flight, studying the behavior of insects, and caring for animals when my home life felt unstable. Those moments sparked questions that never left me: “Why do animals behave the way they do?”, “How does the body heal?”, “What role can science play in easing suffering?” That curiosity eventually grew into a passion and a purpose. As a young woman interested in STEM, I have learned that curiosity is not always encouraged equally. Science can feel intimidating, competitive, and exclusive, especially for women who do not see themselves reflected in the field. Despite this, I have remained driven by a desire to learn and to contribute meaningfully. I see STEM as a space where compassion and logic can coexist, where knowledge can be used not just to innovate, but to protect life. That belief has shaped my academic goals and my confidence as a future professional. I plan to pursue a degree in veterinary sciences with the goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon. Veterinary medicine is a rigorous STEM field that requires mastery of biology, chemistry, anatomy, and problem-solving under pressure. What draws me to it most is its balance of precision and empathy. Each procedure, diagnosis, and treatment is rooted in science, yet every decision impacts a living being and the people who love them. As a woman entering this field, I am motivated not only to succeed, but to represent strength, dedication, and curiosity for others who may follow a similar path. Beyond my career, I hope to use my education to create meaningful change in my community. One of my long-term goals is to fund and support an animal shelter that also promotes mental well-being for people. Research shows that interaction with animals can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression; something I have experienced personally. By combining scientific knowledge with compassion, I hope to create a space where both animals and people can heal. This vision reflects what STEM means to me: applying knowledge creatively to solve real-world problems and improve quality of life. This scholarship’s mission, to foster a community of women empowered by knowledge and driven by curiosity, aligns deeply with who I am and who I aspire to be. I am committed to continuous learning, resilience in the face of challenges, and using science as a tool for good. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue my journey in STEM not only to build a successful career, but to uplift others and contribute to a more compassionate, informed world.

My experience with mental health has shaped nearly every part of who I am; my beliefs, my relationship with others, and the path I hope to take in my career. Growing up in a home filled with tension, arguments, and long stretches of quiet loneliness, I quickly learned how much emotional weight a child can carry without fully understanding it. During those moments when I felt isolated or overwhelmed, animals became my source of comfort. My two cats gave me a sense of safety when the world around me felt unpredictable. They taught me that healing doesn’t always come from words; sometimes it comes from presence, gentleness, and connection. Because of this, I’ve developed a deep belief that mental health is something everyone is entitled to, not something to be ashamed of. My struggles helped me become someone who listens without judgment and cares deeply about the emotional well-being of others. I’ve learned that people often hide their hurt in silence, and that small acts of kindness, whether from a friend, a family member, or even an animal can make a powerful difference. My past has also shaped my relationships. I gravitate toward compassion, honesty, and patience, because I know what it feels like when those things are missing. I’ve built stronger friendships because I understand how important emotional support is. I’ve grown more empathetic because I know the importance of having someone, or something, that makes you feel understood. As I continue to learn more about myself, I’ve also learned to extend that empathy inward; to treat my own mental health with the same seriousness and respect I give to others. These experiences are the foundation of my career aspirations. While my primary goal is to become a veterinarian, my dreams reach beyond traditional veterinary work. One of my long-term goals is to fund and operate an animal shelter that doubles as a mental-health–supportive space for my community. I want to create a place where people can visit not just to adopt animals, but to heal. Research consistently shows the mental-health benefits of being around animals: reduced stress, increased dopamine and serotonin, and an overall sense of comfort and connection. I have experienced those benefits personally, which is why I believe so strongly in creating spaces that unite animal care and emotional well-being. I envision a shelter where people can relax in a calm environment, spend time with adoptable pets, and participate in structured activities that support mental health. Something as simple as sitting beside a gentle dog or holding a cat can bring someone back from the edge of a hard day. I want my shelter to be a place where people find the same sense of peace that animals once gave me. My journey with mental health taught me compassion. Animals taught me comfort. Together, they shaped my purpose. Through my future veterinary career and my dream of creating a healing-focused shelter, I hope to make a positive impact by helping both people and animals feel safe, supported, and understood.

Throughout high school, I met many teachers who taught me formulas, vocabulary, and historical dates; but only one who taught me how to understand myself. My French teacher, Mr. Pierre, whom I had during my freshman and sophomore years, changed the way I move through the world. His influence extended far beyond grammar and pronunciation. He helped me learn how to regulate my emotions at a time when depression and autism made school feel overwhelming and, at times, impossible. When I entered ninth grade, I carried more than a backpack into his classroom. I carried anger that flared too easily and sadness that seemed to stick to my skin. I didn’t yet have the tools to manage sensory overload, frustration, or the heavy waves of emotion that came without warning. Most adults responded by telling me to calm down, try harder, or “stop overreacting,” but Mr. Pierre approached me differently. Rather than focusing on what I did wrong, he focused on what I needed. He noticed when I was beginning to shut down or become overstimulated, and instead of punishing me, he would quietly offer a moment to breathe, step outside, or regroup. When I grew frustrated with myself for not understanding something quickly, he reminded me, gently, consistently, that learning is not a race and that my worth is not measured by how fast I grasp a concept. He celebrated small victories, and when I struggled, he made sure I never confused struggling with failing. What made his guidance so transformative was that it wasn’t loud or dramatic. It was steady. Patient, humane. He taught me grounding techniques, encouraged me to name my emotions rather than fear them, and modeled calm even when I was far from it. Over time, I began to understand that emotional regulation is a skill, not an inherent trait I lacked. Because of him, I learned that compassion is not weakness, that taking a moment to pause is not quitting, and that I deserve the same patience I offer others. He helped me develop the tools to navigate both school and life with more confidence and stability. My academic success, my personal growth, and even my current goals are rooted in the lessons he taught me. Today, when I approach new challenges, I do so with the emotional strategies he gave me. When I feel overwhelmed, I return to the grounding techniques he introduced. When I think about the kind of person I hope to become; kind, patient, and understanding, I think of the example he set for me every day. Mr. Pierre didn’t just change how I approached class; he changed how I approached myself. He helped me believe that I am capable of growth, deserving of grace, and strong enough to keep moving forward. His influence continues to shape who I am, and I carry his lessons with me as a reminder of how powerful one teacher’s compassion can be.

Education has always been important to me because it represents possibility; possibility for stability, for growth, and for becoming the kind of person who can make a real impact on the world. Coming from a low-income background and facing challenges that often made school feel like an uphill battle, I learned early on that education was more than grades or assignments. It was a form of empowerment. Each new skill I learned and each barrier I overcame became evidence that my circumstances did not define my future. Education gave me the language to express my ambitions, the tools to pursue them, and the confidence to believe that I could carve out a meaningful path forward. For me, education isn’t just about entering a career, it’s about shaping the kind of person I want to be. I hope to enter the veterinary field one day, driven by a deep love for animals and a desire to be someone who eases suffering rather than adds to it. Education is the bridge between that dream and reality. It gives me the scientific understanding to care for animals responsibly, the critical thinking skills required to handle emergencies, and the compassion fostered by learning from diverse peers, teachers, and communities. Every lesson, inside or outside the classroom, brings me one step closer to being someone who can make a positive difference. The legacy I hope to leave is one built on compassion, perseverance, and representation. As someone who has faced bullying, mental and physical health challenges, and financial hardships, I want to show others with similar struggles that their dreams are still valid. I want younger students, especially marginalized or underserved ones, to see that success does not require perfection, it requires resilience. If I can become the person who reaches back and lifts others the way so many people have lifted me, then I will consider that my greatest achievement. I also hope to leave a legacy within the animal world. Animals often rely on humans to advocate for their well-being, and I want to use my education to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves. Whether that means working in underserved communities, helping families access affordable animal care, or simply treating every creature with dignity, I want my work to reflect empathy above all else. Ultimately, education matters to me because it gives me the power to grow into the person I’ve always hoped to become. It allows me to build a life grounded in purpose; one where I can support my community, uplift others, and leave the world a little kinder than I found it. And if that becomes my legacy, I will be proud.

Growing up, I learned early how deeply people’s words, actions, and assumptions could shape someone’s sense of self. As someone who has navigated anxiety, depression, and the challenges of belonging, I developed a talent for something that once felt like a survival skill: empathy. Today, I see it as one of my greatest strengths. Rather than turning inward and isolating myself, I’ve learned how to understand others, listen without judgment, and recognize the emotions beneath the surface; qualities that I now hope to use to build a kinder and more understanding world. One of the ways I plan to use my abilities is through my future career in veterinary medicine. Many people forget that being a veterinarian is not only about treating animals; it is also about supporting the families who love them. Illness, injury, and loss are emotional experiences, and I want to become the kind of veterinary professional who can guide people through difficult moments with compassion, patience, and clarity. My goal is to make the veterinary clinic a place where both animals and humans feel safe, understood, and respected. Beyond my career, I also want to use my skills to advocate for mental health awareness, especially among young people who feel alone or misunderstood. Because I know what it feels like to struggle silently, I use my voice to help reduce the stigma around mental health by being open about my own experiences when it is appropriate and safe to do so. I want to help create spaces, both in person and online, where people can be honest about their struggles without fear of judgment. I also try to practice everyday empathy: helping friends through difficult days, supporting peers who feel overwhelmed, and stepping in when I notice someone being isolated or mistreated. These small acts matter. They create environments where people feel seen, valued, and supported, which ultimately strengthens entire communities. Looking forward, I hope to take these skills even further by volunteering, working with youth, and participating in global or local initiatives focused on animal welfare, mental health education, and community-building. My long-term dream is to combine these passions: science, animals, and empathy to advocate for both human and animal well-being on a larger scale. In a world that often feels divided, empathy is one of the few things powerful enough to connect us. I believe my unique blend of compassion, emotional insight, and dedication to helping others will allow me to contribute to a more understanding global community; one person, one animal, and one act of kindness at a time.

Some of the most meaningful work I’ve done has been self-initiated: small projects I created because I saw needs in my community that weren’t being met. I’ve always believed that you don’t have to be in a position of power to make change; sometimes, change starts with a single person deciding that they care enough to do something. My projects have focused on two groups who are often overlooked: underserved youth and vulnerable animals. One of the first initiatives I created was a small peer-support effort at my school for students who struggled with mental health challenges, especially those dealing with depression, anxiety, isolation, or bullying. My own experiences with mental health gave me a deep understanding of what it feels like to be unseen, so I began organizing informal check-in circles: safe, judgment-free spaces where students could talk, vent, or simply sit with someone who understood. I wasn’t a counselor, but I could be a comforting presence, a listener, and a voice reminding people they mattered. I also created a resource sheet with local hotlines, free counseling services, crisis lines, and online supports for students who couldn’t afford therapy. That small sheet quietly spread around the school and helped multiple classmates access help they didn’t know existed. Outside of school, I’ve committed myself to supporting animals in underserved areas, an effort that grew into something larger over time. I started by helping stray and abandoned animals in my neighborhood, offering food, temporary care, and working with rescue groups. Over time, I began organizing small donation drives for shelters that were underfunded and overwhelmed. These drives provided blankets, food, toys, and cleaning supplies; items that seem small, but make a huge difference in overcrowded shelters. I also started creating informational social media posts educating people in my community about affordable spay/neuter options, free vaccination clinics, and how to recognize animal neglect. This became especially impactful for families who wanted to care for their pets but didn’t have the financial means to access veterinary services. The heart of my work is rooted in accessibility; making sure resources reach the people (and animals) who need them most. These efforts are self-initiated not because I was required to do them, but because I felt responsible. Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household taught me that marginalized communities often go unseen, and that support is not always evenly distributed. My projects were simple, but created with intention: to give comfort where there was none, and opportunity where there were barriers. These experiences are part of why I am pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. I want to continue serving underserved communities by providing affordable animal care, education, and outreach that strengthens both animal welfare and the well-being of the families who love them. My self-initiated projects taught me that compassion is powerful, and leadership begins when you choose to act, even if no one asked you to.

Education has always been more than a requirement for me; it has been a lifeline, a compass, and a source of purpose during some of the most difficult chapters of my life. For a long time, I felt pulled in different directions, struggling to understand my place in the world or what my future could look like. As I grew, learned, and pushed through challenges, education slowly gave me a sense of direction that I had never felt before. It didn’t just shape my goals; it helped me find them. Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household, I learned early that life was not always predictable or easy. My father worked tirelessly to take care of us, often carrying more weight on his shoulders than any one person should have to bear. Watching him sacrifice so much for me made me determined to build a future that honored his strength and his love. For a long time, I didn’t know what that future looked like. I just knew that I wanted to create something better; for myself, for him, and for the people and animals I cared about. My journey became even harder when I began struggling with severe depression, social anxiety, and eventually self-harm. I felt isolated inside my own mind, unable to express what I was feeling or ask for the help I needed. My mental health challenges led me to hospitalizations, therapy routines, and long stretches of recovery. These were painful moments; moments where I questioned my worth, my path, and even my ability to keep going. It was during this time that school became both a structure and a motivator for me. Education gave me something steady to hold onto when everything else in my life felt unstable. Even when my mental health made it difficult to concentrate, attend school, or complete assignments, I kept pushing. I learned how to advocate for myself academically, how to ask for support, and how to rebuild study habits when depression made even simple tasks feel impossible. With each class I passed, each chapter I understood, each goal I completed, I began seeing a version of myself who was capable and strong. Slowly, education shifted from being an obligation to becoming a source of empowerment. As I discovered my love for science, especially biology and animal science, everything clicked. Understanding how living beings function, how bodies heal, how life systems intertwine, gave me a sense of wonder that pushed back against the hopelessness I had felt for so long. For the first time, I could see my future clearly: I wanted to become a veterinarian. Animals had always been a comfort to me. Their innocence, their wordless communication, their trust; all of it felt meaningful. When I realized that veterinary medicine combined my compassion with my growing passion for science, I knew I had found my purpose. Education had not only shaped my goals; it had given me the confidence to believe they were possible. Reaching these goals has not been easy. Beyond mental health challenges, financial barriers have always been a reality. College is expensive, textbooks are expensive, transportation is expensive, everything feels like a mountain when you’re climbing it with limited resources. I have had to learn how to navigate scholarship applications, budget tightly, and advocate for financial assistance. These challenges taught me responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of planning for my future. They also deepened my gratitude for every opportunity I receive. Through all of this, my education has shaped me into someone who doesn’t just dream, but someone who works fiercely toward those dreams. In the future, I hope to use my education to create a better world for both animals and the people who love them. I want to work as a veterinarian who offers compassionate, accessible care, especially for families in low-income communities and rural areas where veterinary services are limited. I’ve seen many animals suffer simply because their owners couldn’t afford treatment, and I want to help bridge that gap. My dream is to eventually open a clinic that offers reduced-cost services and community education programs about responsible pet care, preventative treatment, and animal welfare. Beyond clinical work, I also want to pay forward the support I’ve received. Mental health will always be a part of my story, and I want to use that experience to advocate for students, youth, and future veterinary professionals who struggle in silence. This field can be emotionally demanding, and I hope to help build healthier, more compassionate spaces for those entering it. Education didn’t just give me a career path, it gave me direction, stability, and hope for a future I once couldn’t imagine. It taught me that challenges can shape you without defining you, and that purpose can rise out of even the darkest moments. As I continue my journey, I will use everything I’ve learned academically, emotionally, and personally to create a better future not only for myself, but for my community, for the animals I will one day treat, and for the people who believed in me along the way.

Faith is something many people think of only in moments of crisis, but for me, faith became a daily lifeline during one of the hardest periods of my life. A little over a year ago, I experienced a deep struggle with my mental health. My depression and anxiety became overwhelming, and I reached a point where I felt lost in my own mind. It was a season filled with fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion; the kind that makes you question your worth and your future. During that time, I leaned on my faith in a way I never had before. I didn’t always have the words for complicated prayers, but I had sincerity. I had hope, even when it felt small. I believed that there had to be something ahead of me that was brighter than the darkness I felt. My faith became the quiet reminder that I was not meant to give up, that I was created for more than pain, and that healing was possible even if it wasn’t immediate. There were days when all I could do was remind myself that God hadn’t brought me this far to abandon me. I held onto verses and small moments of comfort that felt like stepping stones out of a very heavy place. I learned that faith isn’t always loud, sometimes it’s choosing to get out of bed, choosing to try again, choosing to trust that the future will look different than the present moment. As I reached out for help, received treatment, and surrounded myself with support, I started to see the strength that had been growing quietly inside me all along. Faith didn’t erase the struggle, but it helped me endure it. It helped me hold on long enough to reach stability, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose. That experience changed me. It made me more compassionate, more patient, and more determined to help others who feel the way I once did. My faith helped me understand that challenges don’t define us; what we learn from them does. Today, I carry that belief with me as I work toward becoming a veterinarian. I want to use my resilience and empathy to care not only for animals, but also for the families who love them and may be struggling in their own ways. Relying on faith taught me that even when life becomes overwhelming, I am never alone. It taught me that the darkest chapters can lead to purpose, and that healing makes us capable of helping others heal too. My faith carried me through my hardest season, and it continues to guide me toward a future filled with compassion, service, and hope.

My name is Amya, and if there is one thing that has shaped my life more than anything else, it is my desire to help those who cannot speak for themselves. Growing up, I always felt a deep connection with animals; the quiet ones, the scared ones, the ones that needed patience and gentleness. That connection naturally grew into a dream: to become a veterinarian who not only heals animals, but also helps their families and communities understand the importance of compassion and responsible care. Coming from a single-parent, low-income household, I learned early on how much strength it takes to keep moving forward when life feels overwhelming. My father worked incredibly hard to provide for me, even when finances were tight. Watching him taught me perseverance, gratitude, and the importance of helping others whenever I can. Those lessons became the foundation of who I am and the type of impact I want to make. In my future career as a veterinarian, I plan to use my education to make the world better in three ways. First, I want to provide accessible, affordable care in underserved communities; places where pets are loved deeply, but resources are limited. No family should have to choose between financial stability and their animal’s health. Second, I want to create programs that teach children and teens how to treat animals with empathy. I believe kindness is a learned behavior, and when young people learn to care for animals, it often changes how they treat each other. That’s how you build a more compassionate generation. Third, I hope to mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds who want to enter veterinary medicine. As a young black woman pursuing a career where less than 2% of veterinarians share my background, I know how important representation is. I want to be a voice that tells them, “You belong here. Your dream is possible.” This scholarship would lift a huge burden from my shoulders and allow me to focus fully on my studies without the constant fear of financial strain. It would help me stay on the path toward veterinary school, give me room to take opportunities like internships and volunteer work, and ultimately bring me closer to my goal of opening a community-centered veterinary clinic. I want my life’s work to be defined by compassion; for animals, for people, and for the communities that shaped me. My dream is big, but my heart is bigger, and I’m ready to dedicate my future to making a positive difference wherever I can.

My name is Amya, and one of the most important parts of who I am is my desire to uplift and protect the people around me. I grew up in a single-parent, low-income household, and those experiences shaped not only my character but my understanding of why community matters. When resources are limited, people learn to depend on one another, to share what they can, and to look out for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks. That is the kind of community I want to continue building as I enter higher education. Financial need has always been part of my reality. My family has worked hard to help me reach my goals, but college is a challenge that stretches our resources to their limits. Scholarships like this one would ease the burden on my household, allow me to focus more on my studies, and ultimately help me reach my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I want to give back to both my family and my community in ways that reflect the support I’ve received. My involvement in my community has always centered around kindness, safety, and advocacy. I know what it feels like to be bullied, misunderstood, or pushed aside. Because of that, I make it a priority to protect younger students and children who might be experiencing the same things. I talk openly about empathy, remind them they are not alone, and make myself a safe person to come to. When I see in-person bullying, I do not ignore it; I step in, de-escalate when possible, and report when necessary. Children deserve to know that someone will speak up for them. Online, I encourage safety by teaching kids how to set boundaries, protect their personal information, and recognize harmful behavior. Cyberbullying has become one of the biggest threats to mental health in young people, and sometimes the smallest bit of guidance makes a huge difference. I help others understand that the internet is not anonymous; the words they type carry real weight, real consequences, and real emotional impact. I also try to model positivity online, because kindness can spread just as quickly as cruelty. As I enter higher education, I am committed to continuing this work on a larger scale. My dream of becoming a veterinarian is rooted in compassion, and the same empathy I use to care for animals extends to the people around me. I want to mentor younger students, especially those from underrepresented or financially struggling backgrounds, and show them that their dreams are possible. I want to build a future where more students feel safe, supported, and capable. College is not just about earning a degree for me. It is about becoming someone who can lift others up, someone who protects, guides, and inspires. With this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to building that future, not just for myself, but for everyone watching me and believing they can do it too.

Everyone has a dream that feels a little too big, a little too far away, but impossible to let go of. Mine is to become a veterinarian and eventually open an affordable, community-centered animal clinic that provides high-quality care to families who often cannot afford it. To some, that dream might seem unrealistic; too expensive, too competitive, too demanding. But even if it feels just out of reach, it’s the dream that inspires me, challenges me, and keeps me moving forward. My dream began in childhood, long before I knew the full meaning of the word “veterinarian.” I just knew how deeply I connected with animals. Whether it was a stray cat that followed me home or a bee struggling on the sidewalk, I wanted to help. Animals have a kind of innocence that makes you want to protect them, and I knew early on that I wanted a career centered around compassion. As I grew older, my interest changed from simply loving animals to understanding them. I became fascinated by biology, disease, anatomy, and the science behind healing. That combination of empathy and curiosity is what first sparked my dream. What truly shaped my “pie in the sky” goal was my own family’s financial situation. Growing up in a low-income household meant that taking a sick pet to the vet felt like an impossible expense. I’ve seen people forced to choose between caring for an animal they love and paying a bill. I want to help change that. I want to create a place where compassion is never limited by money; a clinic that offers low-cost care, payment plans, educational outreach, and a judgment-free atmosphere. To reach this dream, I know I need more than passion. I need discipline, education, and resilience. Some of the steps I’ve already taken include pursuing my education seriously, taking advanced science courses, and researching veterinary programs. I’ve also been learning about the financial side of running a clinic; budgeting, grants, nonprofit structures, and community partnerships. I am slowly building the mindset and the skill set I’ll need, even if the journey feels long. I also know I must take care of my mental health to get there. My experiences with depression and anxiety have made the road harder, but they have also made me stronger and more empathetic. Caring for others, animals or people, requires understanding pain. I’ve lived through it, and it has given me a unique strength and a voice I can use to support others. My “pie in the sky” dream isn’t just about animals. It’s about creating a safe space, building community, giving back, and breaking cycles; including the cycle of limited access to medical care. What keeps me committed is the belief that even the biggest dreams are built step by step. One class. One scholarship. One act of courage at a time. And even if the dream feels far away, I’m moving toward it with everything I have.

Supporting others with their mental health has become an important part of my life, largely because I know what it feels like to struggle and to feel alone. Living with depression and anxiety has taught me that small acts of compassion can make a life-changing difference. Because of this, I make it a point to be someone others can safely turn to: someone who listens without judgment, validates their feelings, and reminds them that asking for help is an act of strength, not shame. Friends and classmates often come to me when they feel overwhelmed or isolated, and I take that trust seriously. Whether it’s talking someone through a panic attack, helping them find counseling resources, or simply being present when they feel misunderstood, I try to give others what I once needed myself: patience, encouragement, and a reminder that their experiences matter. Sometimes I'm the person who checks in, helps organize a plan when things feel chaotic, or just sits with someone so they don’t feel like they’re carrying everything alone. These moments have shown me how powerful empathy can be. In the future, as a veterinarian, I plan to extend this emotional support to both animals and the people who love them. Pets are family, and when animals are hurt or sick, their owners often experience fear, grief, and stress. I want to be the kind of veterinarian who not only treats the medical problem but offers reassurance, compassion, and emotional understanding. Veterinary medicine requires scientific skill, but it also requires heart. I hope to create a clinic environment where clients feel heard, respected, and comforted, especially during difficult moments. Ultimately, I want to use my studies and career to make the world a gentler place. By continuing to support others’ mental health now, and by bringing empathy into my future profession, I hope to help people feel less alone and to show that kindness can ripple outward in ways we may never fully see.

Change is something I used to fear, but now it’s something I’m actively choosing for myself. I want to make a change in my life because I’m determined to build a future that is different from what I grew up with, one that is stable, full of opportunity, and shaped by my own choices rather than my circumstances. I want to break cycles, uplift my family, and prove to myself that I can rise above the challenges that once made me doubt my own potential. One of the biggest changes I’m pursuing is my goal of becoming a veterinarian. For years, I dreamed of working with animals, but it always felt distant and unrealistic. Coming from a single-parent, low-income household made higher education feel like a luxury rather than a path I had access to. But then I realized that staying stagnant was its own kind of limitation; and that if I wanted a better future, I had to be the one to chase it. Since then, I’ve taken real steps forward. I’ve pushed through academic challenges, applied for scholarships consistently, learned how to advocate for my own needs, and committed myself fully to preparing for a career in veterinary medicine. I’ve become more disciplined, more organized, and more focused on long-term goals rather than temporary setbacks. Each step, even the small ones, has brought me closer to the life I want. A scholarship like this would have a tremendous impact on my journey. It would allow me to pursue my education without the constant weight of financial stress. Instead of worrying about whether I can afford tuition, I would be able to devote my energy to my studies, hands-on experience, and professional growth. Education is not just a pathway for me, but it’s a promise that I can create a future where I’m not held back by limitations I didn’t choose. Yet, the change I’m working toward isn’t just for me. When I talk about transforming my life, I also think about how I can pay that transformation forward. I want to be someone who uses my success to lift others up. In my future career, I plan to volunteer with shelters, provide low-cost veterinary clinics to underserved communities, and educate young people, especially those from backgrounds like mine, about careers in STEM and animal care. Beyond my profession, I want to be a mentor. I want to show others that even when life feels unpredictable or unfair, there is always a path to something better. Sometimes people just need a little guidance, a little belief, or a small opportunity that opens a big door. If I can be that opportunity for someone else one day, then the change I’m working so hard to create will multiply. I want to make a change in my life because I know I’m capable of growing into someone who can help others, and with the support of this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to becoming that person.

Building credit early is important to me because I want to build a stable financial foundation that supports my future, not limits it. Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household, I learned very early that money isn’t just about comfort, it’s about security, opportunity, and peace of mind. I watched my father stretch every dollar, and even though he made sacrifices so I could succeed, I saw how difficult it was for him to access credit or make large financial decisions without stress. Those experiences taught me that building good credit isn’t optional; it’s essential. As I prepare for college and eventually a career in veterinary medicine, I know my financial choices now will shape my options later. Good credit will allow me to rent an apartment safely, get lower interest rates on student loans, and avoid the cycle of debt that many young adults fall into. It’s not just about buying things, it’s about being able to stand on my own feet with confidence. One smart money move I’ve made was learning how to budget realistically. At first, I struggled. Anytime I received money, I felt pressure to spend it immediately, partly because I never had much growing up, but eventually, after watching my savings disappear way too quickly, I realized I needed discipline. I started using budgeting apps to track where every dollar was going. For the first time, I created categories: savings, emergencies, necessities, and “fun money.” The lesson I learned the hard way was that if you don’t tell your money where to go, it disappears on its own. Now, before I spend anything, I ask myself whether it supports my long-term goals. That shift has helped me save more, spend less impulsively, and prepare for college expenses. My next financial step is to open a secured credit card and use it responsibly. I plan to make small purchases, pay the balance in full each month, and avoid debt at all costs. This will help me build credit safely and intentionally. I also plan to take personal finance courses in college so I can learn about investing, managing debt, and planning for emergencies. What motivates me most is my future. I want to become a veterinarian, not only because I love animals, but because it gives me the chance to lift my family out of financial hardship. I want to break the cycle, be the first to graduate college, and create stability for generations after me. Every smart financial decision I make now is a step toward that dream. Building credit and learning to manage money early isn’t just about adulthood; it’s about freedom. And I’m determined to build a future where financial stress doesn’t hold me back, but pushes me forward.

To me, going to college represents far more than earning a degree. It represents possibility; the possibility of breaking cycles, building a future I can be proud of, and proving to myself that where I come from does not limit where I can go. College is my opportunity to take the challenges I’ve faced and turn them into purpose. Coming from a single-parent, low-income household, higher education was never guaranteed. It was a hope, a dream, something I looked toward with determination even when the path felt uncertain. Watching my father work tirelessly to provide for me taught me the value of perseverance and sacrifice. Those lessons have become the backbone of my journey. Going to college isn’t just about advancing my own life, it’s about honoring the hard work that got me here and creating a better foundation for my future family. My goal is to become a veterinarian and eventually a veterinary surgeon. I’ve always been drawn to animals, not only because I love them, but because they depend on others for care, protection, and advocacy. Science has always been fascinating to me, but veterinary medicine gives that passion meaning. I want to help heal animals, support families, and make compassionate care more accessible, especially in communities where resources are limited. My education will give me the skills to do that; to turn care into action, and passion into impact. College also means personal growth. It means developing confidence, independence, and resilience. It means surrounding myself with people who share ambitions and discovering new ways to use my voice. I want to grow into someone who not only succeeds academically, but also contributes to a supportive, inclusive community on campus. I’ve learned through experience that even small acts of kindness can change someone’s day, or even their life. As a future veterinarian and as a student, I want to be someone who uplifts others, especially those who feel unseen or underestimated. By going to college, I hope to accomplish three major things: build a career that allows me to care for animals and advocate for humane, accessible veterinary services, break the cycle of financial instability in my family and show that higher education can open doors to stability and opportunity, become a role model for younger students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, so they can see themselves thriving in STEM fields. Ultimately, going to college means stepping into the version of myself I’ve always wanted to become. It means embracing a future filled with purpose, hard work, and the chance to make a difference. I’m not just working toward a degree; I’m building a life grounded in compassion, science, and the belief that I can change the world in my own way; one animal, one family, and one community at a time.

Being an “up-stander” means more than speaking up when something is wrong; it means using your voice, compassion, and actions to create lasting change, even in the smallest ways. I’ve learned that advocacy isn’t always loud; sometimes it’s quiet, patient, and consistent. For me, being an up-stander began with a simple truth: kindness matters, and silence helps no one. Growing up, I often saw moments where people or animals were treated unfairly, and it never sat right with me. Whether it was standing up for a classmate who was being teased or rescuing a stray animal that others ignored, I felt a responsibility to help. As I grew older, that instinct developed into a purpose; to use my compassion and my voice to make the world a better, safer place for those who can’t always defend themselves. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that change starts in your own community. I’ve experienced the sting of being misunderstood and excluded, and I know how much it means when even one person chooses to stand beside you. That understanding drives me to reach out to others who may feel isolated, whether because of their background, struggles, or differences. I want to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. My dream is to become a veterinarian, but my mission goes beyond caring for animals, it’s about advocating for empathy. Animals teach us what unconditional care looks like, and I believe that caring for them can strengthen compassion within communities. I plan to use my education to make veterinary care more accessible to families in underserved areas, host outreach programs on animal welfare, and mentor young students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, who dream of entering the sciences. I also hope to raise awareness about the link between empathy for animals and empathy for one another. When people learn to treat animals gently, they often become more mindful and kind toward people as well. Building a better community begins with small acts of care: offering help, listening without judgment, and protecting those who can’t protect themselves because those moments ripple outward into something much larger. Mohamed Magdi Taha’s legacy reminds me that using your voice means leading with both courage and compassion. My voice may not always be the loudest, but it will always stand for fairness, for understanding, and for the belief that kindness is a powerful force for change. I plan to use it to speak for the voiceless, to support those who feel alone, and to help build a world where empathy is strength, not weakness. Being an up-stander isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence: choosing, again and again, to care. And that’s the kind of legacy I hope to leave behind.

If I could make one unique contribution to the world, it would be to bridge the gap between mental health care and accessibility. Too many people struggle in silence because therapy and treatment are seen as luxuries rather than necessities. I believe mental health support should be available to everyone, regardless of income, background, or circumstance. My vision is to create community-based programs that combine education, peer support, and affordable care. By partnering with schools, local clinics, and nonprofit organizations, we could provide early intervention, group therapy sessions, and mental health workshops led by professionals and trained volunteers. Technology could also play a vital role; apps or online platforms that connect people to low-cost or free resources could help those who live in rural or underserved areas. My own journey with depression and anxiety has shown me that support can truly save lives. I want to be part of a movement that normalizes asking for help and ensures that cost never stands in the way of healing.

My name is Amya, and I’ve always believed that compassion is one of the strongest forces in the world. From the time I was young, I was drawn to animals; their loyalty, innocence, and the way they depend on us for care and understanding. That connection led me to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine, with hopes of specializing in veterinary surgery one day. My dream is to heal, to comfort, and to advocate for the creatures who can’t speak for themselves. What made me choose this path wasn’t just a love for animals- it was the realization that science and empathy are inseparable. Veterinary medicine combines biology, anatomy, and chemistry with patience, observation, and heart. Every animal treated is a lesson in both resilience and responsibility. I want to use my education to strengthen the bond between people and animals, promote humane treatment, and make veterinary care more accessible in underserved communities. Representation in my field matters deeply to me. Less than 2% of veterinarians in the United States are Black, and even fewer are women of color. That statistic reminds me how important visibility is, not just for myself, but for the next generation of young people who might not see themselves reflected in science yet. I want to show them that they belong in the lab, the clinic, and the operating room just as much as anyone else. Coming from a single-parent, low-income household, I’ve learned to value perseverance and resourcefulness. I’ve faced my share of challenges, but they’ve taught me to keep moving forward, even when things get difficult. My father’s strength and dedication inspire me to work hard so that I can give back; both to him and to my community. I plan to make an impact by providing veterinary outreach and education, especially in areas where animal care is often overlooked. I want to host workshops that teach compassion for animals, volunteer with shelters, and one day open a clinic that offers affordable care for pets whose families are struggling financially. Animals bring healing and joy into our lives; I want to ensure they receive the same care and love in return. By pursuing my degree and sharing my story, I hope to inspire other young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to chase their dreams fearlessly. Representation is more than a number; it’s a promise that barriers can be broken. My journey is just beginning, but I plan to make sure that the next generation has an easier, brighter path to follow.

Living with ADHD has shaped my educational journey in ways that have been both challenging and transformative. For much of my life, school did not feel like a place built for the way my mind works. While other students seemed able to sit still, focus, and move straight through assignments, my thoughts would scatter in several directions at once. I often understood the material, but struggled to show it in the traditional format or within strict time limits. For a long time, this led to frustration, embarrassment, and the belief that maybe I just “wasn’t trying hard enough.” The reality was that I was trying incredibly hard, just not in a way that was always visible to others. ADHD affected not only my attention, but also my organization, memory, and ability to manage stress. I would sometimes start assignments full of energy, only to lose momentum halfway through. Deadlines felt overwhelming. I worried about being judged or misunderstood. At times, these challenges impacted my confidence and my relationship with school as a whole. However, receiving my diagnosis was a turning point, not because it changed who I was, but because it helped me understand why I functioned the way I do. I stopped viewing myself as “less capable” and started recognizing that I simply needed different tools. I began breaking tasks into smaller steps, setting timers to help with focus, and using planners and digital reminders to stay organized. I learned to advocate for myself with teachers, communicating what support I needed instead of struggling in silence. Most importantly, I began appreciating the strengths ADHD brings along with the challenges: creativity, curiosity, persistence, and the ability to think beyond the obvious. When something interests me, I pour myself into it wholeheartedly. That passion has become a driving force in my life. These strategies have allowed me to not only succeed academically, but to grow personally. I am now able to reflect on what I have overcome with pride. I no longer feel out of place in the classroom; I feel capable of contributing something unique. As I continue my education and pursue my goal of becoming a veterinarian, I plan to carry these lessons with me. My experiences have made me empathetic, patient, and understanding toward others who struggle with invisible challenges. I want to be someone who helps others feel seen and supported, whether they are people or animals in my care. ADHD will always be part of my life, but it no longer defines my limitations. Instead, it influences my strengths, my creativity, and my determination. I have learned how to work with my mind, not against it, and in doing so, I have discovered that I am capable of success; not despite my ADHD, but alongside it.

Pursuing higher education has never been a simple or expected path for me. I come from a single-parent household where resources were often stretched thin, and college was something that felt distant, almost like a luxury rather than a natural next step. My family has always valued hard work and perseverance, but there were many moments when it felt like survival had to come before long-term planning. Because of this, I have had to teach myself how to navigate financial aid forms, research scholarship opportunities, and advocate for my own educational goals. In addition to financial obstacles, my journey has also been shaped by my experiences with mental health. I have struggled with severe depression and social anxiety, challenges that have made school and daily life difficult at times. There were periods when I questioned whether I would ever be able to continue my education at all. But each step forward, even the smallest ones, reminded me that my future is worth fighting for. Seeking help, learning to communicate what I need, and allowing myself to grow have all been essential parts of my progress. I am proud of how far I’ve come, and I am even more determined now to keep moving forward. My goal is to become a veterinarian and specialize in providing accessible, compassionate care. I want to serve communities where cost and lack of resources make pet care difficult, because I understand what it’s like to go without something simply because it feels out of reach. Animals bring comfort, stability, and emotional support to people’s lives, and I want to make sure families don’t have to choose between financial strain and the well-being of a pet they love. Education, to me, is not just about a career, it’s about being able to give back in ways that truly matter. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to breaking financial cycles in my family, setting an example for future generations, and returning care and compassion to the community that helped shape me.

My life and identity have been shaped by growing up in a single-parent household. My father has raised me on his own for as long as I can remember, and while our family structure may look small on paper, the effort and love it took to build it were anything but small. We have faced our share of challenges: financial strain, emotional stress, and the constant balancing act of surviving while still trying to dream bigger. But those experiences have taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of building a future that allows me to give back to the person who gave me everything. My father worked long hours to keep our home stable, often sacrificing his own comfort so that I could have opportunities he never had. There were times when bills piled up, when groceries had to stretch further than they should, and when uncertainty felt like a constant, but even then, he encouraged my curiosity, especially my passion for animals and science. He supported me through health challenges, academic pursuits, and periods when I struggled with my mental health. Through all of it, he never stopped believing in my potential, even when I doubted it myself. Those experiences are a large part of why I am pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. Animals have always been a source of comfort and connection for me, but veterinary work is not only about loving animals. It is also about supporting people who care deeply for them. Many families, especially those with low incomes, struggle to afford veterinary care. I want to be part of the solution: someone who provides not just treatment, but empathy, accessibility, and understanding. Becoming the first college graduate in my family means more than earning a diploma. It means breaking cycles that have held us back for generations. It means gaining career stability, building financial security, and creating opportunities that my father and I never had growing up. It means being able to give back to him in a way that reflects the years he spent giving everything to me. This scholarship would help make that path possible. Without financial support, pursuing higher education is not just challenging; it can feel nearly impossible. Balancing tuition, living expenses, and academic expectations is overwhelming, and this scholarship would relieve some of that burden. It would give me the freedom to focus on my studies, gain experience in veterinary settings, and continue moving forward, rather than worrying about whether I can afford to keep moving at all. I plan to make a difference in the world by becoming a veterinarian who leads with empathy, education, and accessibility. I want to help improve the bond between people and their animals, especially in communities where care is often out of reach. I want my life to be proof that hardship does not have to define the future. Instead, it can shape someone into a person determined to build something better. My story begins with my father’s sacrifices. and it continues with the future I am determined to create.

My plans for the future revolve around a career in veterinary medicine, where I can care for animals and support the people who love them. I hope to become a veterinarian who not only treats illness and injury, but also helps create access to compassionate and affordable care. I believe that animals bring comfort, connection, and joy into our lives, and I want to help ensure that they are treated with respect, empathy, and skill. My journey begins with completing my undergraduate education, gaining experience working with animals, and preparing for veterinary school. I understand that this path requires dedication, long hours of study, and perseverance. I am committed to that work, not only because it aligns with my passions, but because I want to build a future that breaks the cycle of financial instability in my family. I aim to become the first college graduate in my household, and with that achievement, I hope to create new opportunities for myself and for the people who have always supported me. This scholarship would play an important role in making that path possible. Coming from a low-income household means that every step toward education requires careful planning and sacrifice. Financial barriers have the power to limit dreams before they even begin, and I am working hard to make sure that my goals do not remain out of reach simply because of cost. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, rather than worrying about how I will afford tuition, textbooks, and basic living expenses. It would help ease the stress that can come with balancing school and financial strain, giving me more stability to succeed academically and emotionally. In addition to advancing my education, this scholarship would support the future I want to build for my family. My father has worked tirelessly to provide what he could, often putting his own needs aside. I want to repay his sacrifices; not only financially, but by building a life he can be proud of. A degree opens doors. It creates stability, career security, and a chance to give back. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to being able to support my family in the same way they supported me. My goal is not only to achieve a degree, but to create positive change. I want to contribute to veterinary care that is compassionate and accessible. I want to help communities where families may struggle financially, but still deeply care for their animals. I want to create hope. This scholarship will not only help me continue my education, it will help me build a future rooted in gratitude, dedication, and purpose.

To me, legacy is not just what we leave behind when we are gone, but the impact we carry forward from those who came before us. It is the lessons, sacrifices, struggles, and love that shape us. Legacy is the story of a family written across generations, and the moment when someone decides to continue the story differently, with hope and purpose. For me, legacy looks like becoming the first person in my family to graduate from college, building a life with stability and opportunity, and honoring the people who raised me by breaking cycles that held us back. I grew up in a low-income household where hard work was constant and rest was rare. My father especially has carried more than most people ever see. He has given everything he could, even when it meant stretching himself thin, going without, or choosing my needs over his own. He taught me resilience, responsibility, and the truth that love often looks like sacrifice. Even when life was difficult, he never stopped believing in my future. I want my legacy to begin with gratitude for him. Because of how I grew up, I understand the stress and weight of financial instability: the way it shapes decisions, limits choices, and affects one’s sense of what is possible. I saw the dreams my family quietly set aside in order to simply survive. I don’t blame them for that. In fact, it inspires me. Their sacrifices became my motivation to create a different reality, not only for myself, but for all of us. Becoming the first college graduate in my family is not something I treat as a personal achievement alone. It is a turning point. It is the moment where the story starts to change. My goal is to become a veterinarian, and with that career, I hope to bring stability, support, and opportunity back to the family who supported me long before I could support myself. I want to be able to relieve the financial strain my father has carried for so long. I want to be able to give back, to return the love that was poured into me, and to provide the comfort and security we often had to go without. Breaking a cycle is not only about financial change, it is also about emotional and generational change. I want to show future generations of my family that education is possible- that dreams are not too big, that our circumstances do not define our limits. I want my younger relatives, my future children, and even those not yet born to grow up knowing that their future is wide and open. Legacy, to me, is honoring the past while building something better for those who follow. It is saying: “Our story doesn’t end where our struggles began.” I carry my family’s strength with me, and in return, I will create a future where we can finally rest.

My life has been shaped in powerful ways by my experiences with mental health. I have been diagnosed with severe depression and social anxiety, and these challenges have influenced not only how I see the world, but also how I move through it. There were periods in my life when the weight of everything felt overwhelming, when simply waking up and continuing was a battle I didn’t always have the strength to fight. I have been hospitalized for self-harm and I have attempted suicide. These moments were painful turning points- the kind that changes you on a deep level. But they were also moments that led to healing, understanding, and growth that I carry with me every day. Depression and anxiety can make the world feel silent and loud at the same time. They can convince you that you are alone even when you are surrounded by people. For a long time, I believed that my struggles were something to hide, something shameful, something that made me “less than.” I was afraid of being judged. I was afraid of being seen. Though, seeking treatment taught me something different. I learned that asking for help is not weakness, but courage. I learned to communicate honestly about what I felt, to sit with my emotions without letting them define my worth, and to recognize that recovery is not a straight line. Healing is a slow, patient, compassionate process, and I am proud of the person I am becoming through it. These experiences have also shaped my future. I want to become a veterinarian, and the empathy I have learned through my own struggles is something I will carry with me into my work. Animals cannot speak for themselves. They rely on the emotional presence, patience, and understanding of the people who care for them. I know what it feels like to be in pain without having the words to express it. I know what it feels like to fear being misunderstood. This is why I want to be a caregiver: someone who notices, who listens, who stays gentle even when things are difficult. I also want to help reduce stigma around mental health. If someone had told me earlier that struggling did not mean failing, that pain did not mean unworthiness, that asking for help was something strong people do, I might have suffered less. I want to be that voice for others- whether through conversations, advocacy, or simply living openly and without shame. My past does not define me, but it has shaped me. It has taught me resilience, empathy, patience, and strength. I am still healing, still learning, still becoming, and that journey has given me the purpose and compassion I will carry into everything I do.

Being both African American and Caucasian has shaped my identity in ways that are sometimes complex, but ultimately meaningful and grounding. Growing up between two cultural experiences has meant learning to hold more than one truth at a time. I have learned what it feels like to belong deeply, and also what it feels like to be isolated, misunderstood, or expected to choose one side of myself over the other. These experiences have influenced how I see myself, how I see others, and the kind of impact I want to have in the world. As a mixed-race individual, I have often been placed in situations where I am asked to define or defend my identity. Sometimes it came in small, casual comments: questions about “what” I am instead of who I am. Other times it came in moments where I could feel myself being judged or categorized before I even spoke. These experiences could have pushed me toward silence. Instead, they taught me to speak for myself, to honor every part of my story, and to treat others with the same respect and dignity I had to learn to give myself. My identity has also connected me to resilience. The history of African Americans in this country is marked by struggle, but equally by strength, intellect, creativity, and endurance. Knowing that my lineage carries both hardship and triumph motivates me to push forward, even when life feels difficult. I am reminded that I am here because generations before me chose hope and survival. I carry that with me every day. This identity shapes my future path as well. I plan to become a veterinarian, not only to care for animals, but also to serve communities that are often overlooked. Access to veterinary care is deeply unequal. Many families in low-income or rural neighborhoods, including many communities of color, cannot afford the care their animals need. I know firsthand what it feels like to love deeply and feel limited by circumstance. I want to help change that. I hope to eventually create programs that provide low-cost veterinary services, education about animal health and welfare, and community outreach. I want to work in spaces where compassion is needed most, and that is places where both people and animals deserve care, respect, and understanding. My identity has taught me empathy, cultural awareness, and how to listen before I act. These qualities will shape the way I serve. Right now, I am pursuing my education, applying for scholarships, gaining experience, and remaining focused on my goals. I am learning to trust that there is power in bringing my full self to every space I enter. I don’t have to separate my history to succeed; I can succeed because of it. Being both African American and Caucasian does not split me, it completes me. It is the foundation of my resilience, the heart of my compassion, and the reason I am committed to creating a future where care is accessible, humane, and equal.

Last year, I began experiencing digestive health issues that significantly changed the way I moved through the world. At first, I didn’t understand what was happening to my body. Foods I could normally eat suddenly caused severe discomfort, bloating, and digestive symptoms. It wasn’t a condition that could be hidden easily, and because of that, it affected my confidence in ways I had never faced before. I found myself worrying constantly when I was at school, in social settings, or even around my closest friends. I feared judgment. I feared drawing attention. I feared simply existing in the space I was in. Unfortunately, some people did notice, and not everyone responded with empathy. I was teased, whispered about, and excluded in small but painful ways. The bullying didn’t just make me feel embarrassed; it made me feel like I needed to shrink myself to avoid being seen. I isolated myself more, stayed quiet in class, and avoided situations where I thought my symptoms might act up. I felt alone in something I couldn’t control. But as difficult as this experience was, it became one of the most transformative periods of my life. I learned how deeply our physical and emotional health are connected. I learned what it means to advocate for myself: to make medical appointments, research treatment options, adjust my diet, and learn patience when my body needs time. I also learned who truly cared for me. The friends and family who listened, who reassured me, and who treated me with kindness reminded me that compassion is powerful and necessary. Most importantly, this experience reshaped how I view others. Before this, I knew in theory that many people struggle silently. After this, I felt the truth of that deeply. Now, I approach people with more gentleness, more understanding, and more willingness to see beyond what’s on the surface. I know that even something as simple as kindness can change someone’s day. This has strengthened my commitment to becoming a veterinarian. Animals communicate their pain differently: quietly, subtly, and often without being understood. They rely on humans to notice, to care, and to advocate for them. Because I know what it feels like to be misunderstood in my pain, I want to be someone who recognizes and responds to suffering with empathy. I want to provide comfort, safety, and support, not just for animals, but also for the people who love them and may be scared for them. My digestive condition challenged my confidence, but it also strengthened my character. It taught me resilience, patience, self-acceptance, and the importance of compassion. I no longer see my experience as something to be ashamed of; I see it as something that shaped me into someone kinder, stronger, and more determined to help others, and that is the person I am proud to bring into my future in animal care.

I understand what it means to struggle. From an early age, I had my first brushes with depression. My parents divorced before I made it into second grade, and we had to switch cities, and therefore schools. That feeling of alienization grew to define me, for both my personal and academic life. The cost of higher education is overwhelming for most, but for families like mine, it can feel impossible. I’ve never known what it’s like to hand money to the lunch lady as my meals were always free. I’ve watched friends receive gifts beyond my dreams. I've eaten ramen noodles for dinner for days on end because the next check hadn’t come in. These moments didn’t just shape my childhood; they taught me to be grateful, resourceful, and persistent. These traits would be my greatest asset to battle the challenges I would later face. One of my biggest personal battles was overcoming envy and the ache of wanting what others had. But rather than letting it consume me, I focused on what I could control. I used what little money I had to help pay for groceries or pet supplies. I tried to eat less when times were tight, and I worked hard in school, not just for my future, but to ease the weight on my parents' shoulders. I found joy in small victories: helping around the house, earning high grades, and contributing in any way I could. These experiences have fueled my ambition. I know what it means to struggle, and I also know what it means to keep going anyway. I’ve learned that dreams are not just for the privileged—they’re for anyone willing to fight for them. I dream of becoming a veterinarian, and I’m fully committed to making that happen, no matter how long or hard the road may be. My hope is that, in the future, I will not have to struggle financially, and may even be able to support my family, which they had tried so long to do for me when I was the one in need. Support from this grant would mean more than financial relief, it would be a symbol of belief in my potential. It would allow me to focus more on my education and less on financial stress, bringing me one step closer to my goal. Even if I am not selected, I will continue working toward my future. Thank you sincerely for considering me.

My life was not handed to me. In my own little world—back when my parents would always argue and my days were filled with loneliness and silence, animals were my solace. I had two dogs and a cat then: King, my sweet pit bull; Zoe, my cheerful French bulldog; and Roux, a quiet little calico. While I adored them deeply, they weren’t my only source of comfort. I loved watching birds soar across the sky and observing the tiny lives of insects as they scurried about. Those small, quiet moments became my escape, and my adoration for animals of every kind helped distract me from the chaos at home. As I grew older, I began thinking about my future; what I could do with my life that would make me happy and give me purpose. At first, I was fascinated by entomology, the study of insects. Their variety and resilience amazed me; despite their small size, they thrive in almost every corner of the world. Yet, when I thought about my life more deeply, I realized that I wanted to combine that same fascination with compassion and service. I wanted to do something that could make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. Money was always a source of tension in my household. I wanted a career that could support me financially, but also fulfill me emotionally and ethically. After a lot of reflection, I decided that becoming a veterinarian would allow me to do both. Veterinary medicine combines science, empathy, and skill in a way that perfectly matches who I am and what I care about most. Since my childhood, I’ve met and cherished many more animals, each one reinforcing my sense of purpose. My current pets, two affectionate brown tabby cats, push me to keep striving toward my goal. I love them with all my heart, and that love drives me to do my best. When I reflect on the bond I share with them, I think about how others must feel about their own animals. The thought of being able to help people keep their pets healthy and happy fills me with joy and determination. I want to be the person who helps make that possible. I plan to major in veterinary sciences, with the goal of specializing in veterinary surgery. The idea of performing life-saving operations and helping injured animals recover gives me a deep sense of purpose. I want to dedicate my life to easing the suffering of animals and giving families more time with their animals. Animals have been my constant comfort, my inspiration, and my motivation. They gave me peace during my hardest times, and now, I want to give something back. Through veterinary medicine, I hope to repay the love they’ve shown me by devoting my life to their care.

For motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds, scholarships and grants are more than just financial assistance they’re a lifeline. They represent hope, equality, and the possibility of breaking generational cycles. To me, they are a way to bridge the gap between those who have and those who aspire, placing all students on a scale where perseverance and potential matter more than economic standing. Students who grow up with fewer resources often gain lessons that stay for a lifetime. They learn patience from waiting, gratitude from having little, and creativity from navigating challenges. Their drive is not fueled by comfort, but by the will to rise above their challenges. Supporting these students through scholarships is not charity, but an investment into new processes of thought. Many, like myself, see education as not only a way out but also a way forward. Since we know how difficult it can be, we’re more likely to return the favor. This investment into our communities creates a ripple effect of opportunity for others. I’ve faced my own share of obstacles. One of the hardest was dealing with envy and the ache of wanting what others had: stability, abundance, ease. I have learned to focus on what I can control. I helped however I could: using what little money I earned to contribute to groceries or pet supplies, eating less when times were tight, and working hard in school not just for myself, but to lift some of the weight off my parents’ shoulders. I found joy in the small victories, a good grade, a clean kitchen, a proud smile from my parents. Those moments strengthened me. They taught me that pride in what you do isn’t reserved for the privileged, it’s for anyone willing to fight for it. I dream of becoming a veterinarian, and I’m fully committed to making that happen, no matter how long or difficult the road ahead. This grant would not only relieve some of the financial burden on my family, but it would also affirm that my efforts matter. It would also show that someone believes in my potential. With your support, I’ll be one step closer to serving animals and communities. Ultimately, it would be giving back to students like me who need someone to make an investment in them. I hope my story becomes one that inspires others in my community, not just to dream, but to believe that their dreams are valid, regardless of where they start.
