Melissa Sandoval
Black, Indigenous, and people of color regularly confront barriers to higher education, especially first-generation college students. As a recipient of scholarships that truly made a difference in financing my education, I would like to pay these opportunities forward and this is my start in doing just that. At the heart of this scholarship foundation is the African proverb, Ubuntu, that being human is recognizing the humanity of others and investing in our community, as we are inextricably bound. In my studies and my travels, several proverbs have resonated with me including a Haitian proverb: Piti piti, zwazo fè nich li meaning little by little the bird builds its nest. I am beginning this fund to help one BIPOC student from New York with the hopes of expanding each year.
