Where did the mascot for the Fighting Squirrels come from?

Among the very first students of Mary Baldwin University, then Augusta Female Seminary, was Mary Julia Baldwin. She was a pioneer and leader of her time that led the school through a very tumultuous era in American history, the Civil War. Mary Julia Baldwin's family crest, the fighting squirrel, is represented around the University and is proudly MBU's mascot, as it is a symbol and reminder of Mary Baldwin's legacy.
