Williams Academy Class of '26 Legacy Scholarship

When people hear "foster care," they often think of the difficulties it brings. While those difficulties are real, my time in foster care has also taught me lessons that will stay with me for life. My experiences have made me stronger, more independent, and determined to create a future different from my past. Although my journey has not always been easy, it has shown me that tough circumstances do not determine where you end up. Growing up in foster care meant life could change at any moment. There were times I had to adjust to new environments and figure things out on my own. Those experiences forced me to grow up quickly, but they also taught me how to be flexible and strong. I learned that I couldn't control everything that happened to me, but I could control how I reacted. Instead of giving up when life got tough, I chose to keep moving forward and focus on building a better future for myself. My time in foster care has also taught me to value every opportunity I get. I don’t take my education for granted because I know it can open doors that might not have been available otherwise. Whenever I face setbacks, I remind myself of everything I've already overcome. That perspective motivates me to work hard in school and keep pushing toward my goals, even when things get stressful. I want my story to be about perseverance, not the challenges I've faced. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend North Carolina Central University to earn my college degree. Going to college is more than just the next step in my education; it’s the foundation for the life I want to build. I want to gain the knowledge and skills for a successful career, become financially independent, and create opportunities that weren’t always available to me growing up. More than anything, I want to prove to myself that my circumstances do not define my future. Receiving this scholarship would make a significant difference in helping me reach those goals. College is expensive, and as someone who has been in foster care, I don’t have the same financial support many other students can rely on. This scholarship would help cover the cost of tuition, books, and other school expenses, allowing me to focus more on my education instead of worrying about how to pay for everything. It would also remind me that there are people who believe in students like me and are willing to invest in our futures. My experiences in foster care have shaped who I am today. They have taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of never giving up, even when life is tough. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I also know I have the strength to overcome them. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals, earning my degree, and building the future I have always believed possible.
