Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
I believe that success is not just about accomplishing your own dreams, but also about being able to use the opportunities given to you to create opportunities for others. I have had a lot of struggles in my life, and I know what it is like to be in a situation that holds you back from achieving your dreams. I have seen how some people have been put in situations that have stopped them from being as successful as they want to be. Because of my struggles and seeing others go through this, I have decided that I want to be able to change the lives of others. Education is the key to a better future for me. After receiving my high school diploma, I will continue my educational journey at North Carolina Central University to receive my college degree and be able to become successful. Once I receive my education, it will not only benefit myself; it will also help me to change the lives of others. One of my personal goals is to be a role model to others. I understand what it feels like to be struggling and to be in a situation that is putting me back every day. I know that in my life, it is very important to keep trying my best and to never give up on myself. I want to be able to influence my peers and others who are in similar situations as I am or who come from troubled homes or backgrounds. Sometimes all we need is someone to believe in us to change our outlook on life. I want to be able to change the lives of those who are going through what I am and be there for them in order for them to be able to see that their dreams can become reality just like mine are. The people I look up to are the people who can face the obstacles in their path with strength and determination. My family, relatives, and community have all made huge impacts on my life. They show me how it is possible to work through struggles and still be happy and grateful for what you have. Parents who work hard and sacrifice their time to give their children a better life inspire me, as do teachers who spend their time and energy ensuring that their students are succeeding. These people and others like them have helped me to realize that it is not just about achieving my dreams, but it is also about helping others achieve theirs. I plan to take part in community service and other programs in which I can mentor other youth. I would like to be able to share my experiences with others in order to give them courage and give them someone they can trust and confide in. I would also like to help other programs that can help those less fortunate or those without parents or families around them. I want to be able to ensure that those less fortunate have an equal opportunity to succeed as I have had the opportunity to do so. If I can change just one life and give that person a better life than he or she has had before, I will know that it will have been worth it.

Growing up in a low-income family has taught me that perseverance is needed not only to get through tough times, but to keep going even when things don't seem to be improving. I have gone through my share of struggles financially, and those times have only pushed me to want to work harder and achieve more. I learned early on to make the most out of the opportunities life gives, and to be grateful that I have the chance to make something better for myself through my education. These experiences have shown me that I have the character to overcome and move past obstacles in my path to achieving the life I want. They gave me the insight to understand that no matter what happens or what circumstances I find myself in, I can always turn it around for the better if I work hard enough and put my mind to it. Therefore, I aim to show myself and others that no matter where you are from or what situation you are placed in, you can change it. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend North Carolina Central University and get my degree from there, so that I can have a great foundation for the career I seek to have. I'm putting all my effort into achieving my educational goals, and I'm seeking out scholarships to help me get to college and ease the financial stress. In my future, I want to be able to inspire those who are going through what I went through to seek their dreams no matter their situation. I want to be able to help make a difference in my community by contributing my skills and experience to help those in need and give them support and guidance.

Success is not based on where someone starts in life but on their determination to keep moving forward. Many students from tough backgrounds face obstacles that extend beyond the classroom. Financial struggles, unstable family situations, and limited resources can make earning a college degree feel impossible. Despite these challenges, many of us keep working hard because we know education is one of the best ways to create a better future. Students who show resilience, determination, and commitment to their goals deserve opportunities like scholarships. These chances can change the course of their lives. Throughout my life, I have faced challenges that could have easily discouraged me from pursuing higher education. As someone who has gone through the foster care system and experienced financial hardship, I have realized that nothing comes easy. There have been times when I had to focus on more than just school, but I never let my circumstances become an excuse to give up. Instead, they motivated me to keep pushing forward. Every obstacle has taught me to be resilient, flexible, and thankful for every opportunity I get. I have worked hard to stay focused on my education because I know it is the key to building a stable and successful future. While many students can rely on family for financial support, I have had to prepare for college knowing that I need to be as independent as possible. That reality has pushed me to take my education seriously and keep working toward my goals despite the uncertainty that sometimes comes with my circumstances. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend North Carolina Central University and earn my college degree. My goal is to build a successful career that offers financial stability while allowing me to give back to my community and inspire others who have faced similar challenges. I want my story to show that a person’s background does not define their future. Receiving this grant would help eliminate one of the biggest barriers between me and my goals: the cost of college. It would help cover tuition, books, and other educational expenses, allowing me to concentrate on learning instead of constantly worrying about money. More importantly, this grant would represent an investment in someone who is dedicated to making the most of every opportunity. My experiences have taught me that resilience, hard work, and determination can overcome even the toughest circumstances. I cannot change where I started, but I can choose where I am going. With the support of this grant, I will keep working toward my education, my career, and a future that reflects the effort I have put into overcoming every obstacle along the way.

Sports have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. They have taught me lessons that extend beyond the game and have influenced how I approach school, relationships, and life. Through every practice, competition, and challenge, I have learned the value of hard work, discipline, resilience, and teamwork. These experiences have helped me grow into someone determined to keep improving, regardless of the obstacles I face. One of the greatest lessons sports have taught me is that success requires consistency. Achieving goals does not happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and a willingness to keep working even when progress feels slow. There have been times when I lost games, made mistakes, or fell short of my expectations. Those experiences taught me that setbacks are part of the process. Instead of giving up, I learned to reflect on what went wrong, improve my skills, and come back stronger. That mindset has helped me not just in sports but also in my education and everyday life. Being part of a team has also shown me the value of supporting others and working toward a common goal. I have learned that every teammate plays an important role, and success comes from trusting one another and communicating well. Those experiences have taught me leadership, accountability, and respect for others. I have realized that helping those around me succeed is just as rewarding as achieving personal success. Sports have also given me confidence. Competing has challenged me to believe in myself, stay focused under pressure, and remain calm during tough situations. Knowing that I have prepared as much as possible gives me the confidence to face challenges head-on, whether they happen during a game, in the classroom, or in daily life. I have learned that confidence comes from preparation, dedication, and trusting the work I have put in. Outside of athletics, sports have helped me develop discipline and strong time management skills. Balancing practices, games, schoolwork, and other responsibilities has taught me how to stay organized and committed to my goals. Those habits will continue to support me as I prepare for college and eventually start my career. As I move forward, I know the lessons sports have taught me will stay with me. They have demonstrated the importance of perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and determination. No matter what challenges I encounter in the future, I will continue to tackle them with the same mindset that sports have instilled in me: work hard, stay focused, support others, and never stop striving to become the best version of myself.

When people hear "foster care," they often think of the difficulties it brings. While those difficulties are real, my time in foster care has also taught me lessons that will stay with me for life. My experiences have made me stronger, more independent, and determined to create a future different from my past. Although my journey has not always been easy, it has shown me that tough circumstances do not determine where you end up. Growing up in foster care meant life could change at any moment. There were times I had to adjust to new environments and figure things out on my own. Those experiences forced me to grow up quickly, but they also taught me how to be flexible and strong. I learned that I couldn't control everything that happened to me, but I could control how I reacted. Instead of giving up when life got tough, I chose to keep moving forward and focus on building a better future for myself. My time in foster care has also taught me to value every opportunity I get. I don’t take my education for granted because I know it can open doors that might not have been available otherwise. Whenever I face setbacks, I remind myself of everything I've already overcome. That perspective motivates me to work hard in school and keep pushing toward my goals, even when things get stressful. I want my story to be about perseverance, not the challenges I've faced. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend North Carolina Central University to earn my college degree. Going to college is more than just the next step in my education; it’s the foundation for the life I want to build. I want to gain the knowledge and skills for a successful career, become financially independent, and create opportunities that weren’t always available to me growing up. More than anything, I want to prove to myself that my circumstances do not define my future. Receiving this scholarship would make a significant difference in helping me reach those goals. College is expensive, and as someone who has been in foster care, I don’t have the same financial support many other students can rely on. This scholarship would help cover the cost of tuition, books, and other school expenses, allowing me to focus more on my education instead of worrying about how to pay for everything. It would also remind me that there are people who believe in students like me and are willing to invest in our futures. My experiences in foster care have shaped who I am today. They have taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of never giving up, even when life is tough. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I also know I have the strength to overcome them. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals, earning my degree, and building the future I have always believed possible.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
Attending higher education is really important to me because it is the foundation for everything I hope to achieve in the future. I see college as more than just classes and homework. It’s the place where I can build the knowledge, skills, and experience I need to reach my career goals and actually make a difference in people’s lives. My main goal is to work in the sports medicine field. I want to help athletes and active individuals recover from injuries, improve their performance, and stay healthy. Higher education will give me the strong science background I need to understand how the human body works, especially things like anatomy, physiology, and injury prevention. Without that deeper knowledge, I wouldn’t be fully prepared to handle real situations in a professional setting. College will give me the structure to learn these things step by step and actually understand them at a deeper level instead of just surface knowledge. Another important part of higher education is the hands-on experience. It’s not just about what you learn in lectures, but also what you apply in real life. Through labs, internships, and clinical experiences, I will be able to work with real people and real situations. That experience is important because it helps me build confidence and learn how to think quickly and responsibly. In sports medicine, you need to be able to stay calm, make good decisions, and understand injuries properly, and higher education is where I will develop those skills. College will also help me grow as a person. Being around different people, learning how to manage my time, and handling responsibilities on my own will prepare me for life after school. I know it won’t always be easy, but those challenges will help me become more independent and disciplined. That matters because I don’t just want to be good at my job; I want to be someone who can be trusted and relied on in any situation. In terms of creating a positive impact, my goal is to help people feel supported during some of their toughest moments. Getting injured can be really frustrating, especially for athletes who depend on their physical ability. I want to be someone who helps them through that process, not just physically but also mentally. I want to encourage them, guide them, and help them get back to doing what they love safely. I also hope to give back to my community by being someone younger students can look up to. I know how important it is to see people from similar backgrounds succeeding in certain fields. If I can reach my goals, I want to use my journey to show others that they can do it too, even if it feels difficult at first. Sometimes just seeing someone else make it can change the way a person sees their own future. Higher education is the path that will help me turn my goals into reality. It will give me the knowledge, experience, and confidence I need to succeed in sports medicine, and it will prepare me to make a real, positive impact on the people I work with and the community around me.

Diversity in STEM careers is important because it makes science, technology, engineering, and math stronger, more creative, and fairer for everyone. STEM fields shape almost everything in our daily lives, from medicine and phones to transportation and climate solutions. Because of that, it matters a lot who is involved in creating those things. When people from different backgrounds are included, the ideas and solutions that emerge from STEM become better and more complete. One of the biggest reasons diversity matters in STEM is that people think differently based on their experiences. Someone who grew up in a different community or faced different challenges may see a problem in a completely new way. That can lead to better ideas that others might not think of. When everyone in a room has the same background, it’s easier for ideas to stay limited or one-sided. But when you mix different perspectives together, it pushes people to think deeper and more creatively. That’s how real innovation happens. Diversity in STEM is also important because it helps make sure technology and science work for everyone, not just a certain group. For example, medical research or new technology should be designed with all types of people in mind. If only a small group of people is making decisions or designing products, they might accidentally leave others out. But when different voices are included, they can point out problems, needs, or situations that others may not notice. This leads to better, more useful results for society as a whole. Another important part of representation is inspiration. When students see people in STEM who look like them or come from similar backgrounds, it makes those careers feel more possible. It’s a lot easier to believe you can do something when you actually see someone doing it. Without that representation, some students might feel like STEM is not for them, even if they are fully capable. Having more diversity in these fields helps break that mindset and encourages more young people to pursue science and math-related careers. Diversity in STEM also helps fix long-term inequality. For a long time, not everyone has had the same access to education or opportunities in these fields. By increasing representation, we are helping open doors for people who may have been left out in the past. This doesn’t just help individuals, it also strengthens the entire workforce by bringing in more talent, more ideas, and more perspectives. At a higher level, STEM is used to solve global problems such as disease, climate change, and technological development. These problems affect people all over the world in different ways. Having a diverse group of people working on these issues means the solutions are more likely to work for different communities, not just one type of population. It makes science more complete and more connected to real life. Diversity in STEM is not just something “nice to have.” It actually makes the work better. It leads to stronger ideas, fairer solutions, and more opportunities for future generations. When everyone has a chance to contribute, STEM becomes more powerful and more meaningful for the world as a whole.

Getting financial support for school would make a meaningful difference in how I move forward with my academic journey. One of the biggest challenges I face is not just getting accepted into the programs I want, but figuring out how to afford everything that comes with it. The cost of higher education can be overwhelming, especially when you consider tuition, books, supplies, and other daily expenses. These funds would relieve a large part of that financial stress and allow me to focus more on my education and long-term goals instead of constantly worrying about how to pay for everything. A major way these funds would help me is by covering essential academic costs such as tuition, textbooks, and required materials. These are not optional expenses, and without them, it is difficult to succeed in school. Sometimes students are forced to make tough decisions, like delaying the purchase of a textbook or trying to get by without the right resources. With this financial support, I would be able to fully participate in my classes without hesitation. I would have access to everything I need from the start, which would put me in a better position to stay organized, keep up with assignments, and perform at my best academically. In addition to basic expenses, these funds would open the door for me to gain valuable experiences outside of the classroom. I am planning to pursue a career in the sports medicine field, which requires both strong academic knowledge and hands-on experience. Opportunities such as internships, certifications, and training programs are important steps in building the skills needed for this career. However, many of these opportunities come with additional costs that can be difficult to manage. With financial assistance, I would be able to take advantage of these experiences, learn in real-world environments, and better prepare myself for the demands of my future profession. Another important way these funds would support me is by reducing the number of hours I would need to work while attending school. While having a job can be beneficial, working too many hours can take away time and energy that should be focused on academics. Trying to balance a heavy workload with school responsibilities can lead to stress and burnout, which can negatively impact performance. With this support, I would be able to dedicate more time to studying, completing assignments, and engaging in activities that help me grow both academically and personally. Beyond the financial benefits, receiving these funds would also give me a sense of motivation and confidence. It would remind me that others believe in my goals and are willing to invest in my future. That encouragement would push me to work even harder and take full advantage of every opportunity I am given. I would feel a strong sense of responsibility to make the most of this support and continue striving toward success. These funds would not only help me manage the cost of education, but they would also allow me to fully invest in my future. They would give me the stability I need to stay focused, the freedom to pursue important opportunities, and the confidence to continue working toward a career in sports medicine. With this support, I would be better prepared to take the next steps in my academic journey and turn my goals into reality.

One high school teacher who really influenced me is my logistics teacher, Mr. Nicely. I had him during a time when I wasn’t always putting in my best effort and was mostly just doing enough to get by. I didn’t fully realize my potential, and I wasn’t really thinking about how my habits would affect my future. Mr. Nicely noticed that, and instead of ignoring it, he took the time to actually talk to me about it. I remember one moment when he was very honest with me. He told me that I was capable of doing more, but I wasn’t pushing myself the way I should be. It wasn’t harsh, but it was real, and it stuck with me. A lot of teachers focus only on grades, but he focused more on my mindset and how I approached my work. That made me start thinking differently about myself and what I could actually achieve if I put in the effort. What really made a difference was that he didn’t just say those things once and forget about them. He kept checking in, pushing me, and holding me accountable. If I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to do, he called me out, but he also supported me when I tried to improve. That balance of being strict but also supportive showed me that he genuinely cared about my success, not just in his class, but overall. Because of Mr. Nicely, I started taking more responsibility for myself. I began putting more effort into my work, managing my time better, and thinking more seriously about my future. He helped me understand that discipline and consistency matter more than just talent. That lesson really stuck with me and started to change how I handled things, both in school and outside of it. The biggest impact he had on me is how I approach life now. Before, I would sometimes take the easy way out or do the minimum. Now, I try to hold myself to a higher standard and push myself to do better, even when no one is forcing me to. I’ve realized that what I do now affects my future, and that’s something I didn’t fully understand before. Mr. Nicely had a lasting impact on me because he helped me see my potential and pushed me actually to use it. He didn’t just teach me logistics; he taught me how to take myself seriously and how to approach my goals with more effort and discipline. That’s something I’ll carry with me long after high school.

One of my biggest academic goals right now is just to finish high school strong and set myself up for what comes next. I want to go to college or choose a career path where I can actually learn useful skills and build a stable future for myself. I’m not perfect when it comes to school, but I’ve been working on staying more consistent, managing my time better, and putting in real effort even when I don’t feel like it. I’ve realized that success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about showing up and doing the work over time. For my future career, I don’t just want a job that pays bills; I want something that actually means something. I want to be in a position where I can grow, improve, and eventually help other people, too. I’m still figuring out exactly what I want to do, but I know I want to be successful enough to support myself and also give back in some way. I want to be someone people can look up to and someone who makes a difference, even if it’s not on a huge scale. When it comes to giving back to my community, most of what I’ve done has been through helping people around me at school. I’ve helped classmates and younger students with assignments, studying, or just understanding things they were struggling with. I’ve also tried to be someone people can talk to when they’re stressed or need advice. It might not seem like a big deal, but I’ve seen how much even small support can help someone, especially during stressful times like high school. Those experiences honestly changed how I look at things. Before, I thought making a difference had to be something big, like starting an organization or doing something everyone notices. But I’ve learned that it can be way simpler than that. Just helping one person, being there for someone, or encouraging someone when they’re struggling can actually matter a lot more than people think. Because of that, I feel more motivated to keep doing that in the future. No matter what career I go into, I want to keep helping people in some way. Whether that’s mentoring, giving advice, or just being a positive influence, I want to use what I’ve learned and my experiences to support others. My goals are really about building a better future for myself while also making sure I’m doing something that helps others too. I don’t have everything figured out yet, but I know I want to keep growing, stay focused, and be someone who makes a positive impact, even if it starts small.
Chris Ford Scholarship
I would describe myself as someone who is still figuring things out while also being driven to create a better future for myself. As a high school senior, I’ve learned a lot, not only from school but also from life experiences, challenges, and the people around me. I try to be responsible, work hard, and keep improving, even when things get tough. I’m the kind of person who wants to be successful, not just for myself but also to make my family proud and to create opportunities that might not have existed before. Throughout high school, I’ve realized that growth doesn’t just come from getting good grades; it also comes from learning to manage my time, handle stress, and make better decisions. I’ve had moments when I could have done better, but those experiences taught me important lessons about discipline and accountability. I believe those lessons are just as crucial as anything learned in a classroom because they prepare you for real life. For my future career, I want to choose a path that provides financial stability while also making a difference in people’s lives. I don’t want to work just for money; I want to feel that my efforts truly matter. Regardless of the specific career I end up choosing, one of my main goals is to positively impact others, whether by helping people directly, creating something useful, or being someone others can count on. One way I plan to make a positive impact is by being a role model, especially for those in situations similar to mine. I think representation and setting a good example really matter. If people can see someone who worked hard, stayed focused, and achieved their goals, it can inspire them to do the same. Even small actions, like giving advice, helping someone stay on track, or simply being supportive, can make a difference over time. I also want to use my career to give back to my community in some way. This could involve volunteering, mentoring younger students, or supporting programs that help people succeed. I believe success isn’t just about personal achievement but also about using that success to help others. If I find myself in a position to give back, I certainly want to take that opportunity. Another important goal I have is to continue learning and growing, even after high school and college. The world is always changing, and I want to be someone who adapts, improves, and stays open-minded. By doing this, I’ll be better prepared to solve problems, face challenges, and make meaningful contributions in whatever field I choose. Overall, I see my future as a chance not just to build a career but also to create a life filled with purpose. I want to be successful, but I also want to make a difference, even if it starts in small ways. By staying focused, working hard, and using what I learn to help others, I believe I can have a positive impact on the world over time.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Honestly, my experience with finances and financial education has been pretty basic, but also kind of eye-opening as I’ve gotten older. Growing up, I didn’t really think much about money besides saving small amounts from birthdays or doing little things like chores for cash. Most of what I knew came from watching my parents, like seeing them pay bills, talk about budgeting, or stress about unexpected expenses. That showed me early on that money is important, but it also made me realize how easy it is to feel overwhelmed if you don’t have a plan. In school, I didn’t start learning real financial skills until more recently. Before that, I honestly didn’t know much about things like credit scores, investing, or even how taxes work. Now that I’ve been exposed to topics like budgeting, saving, and investing, I see how important financial education actually is. For example, learning about things like stocks, bonds, and index funds helped me understand that money doesn’t just have to sit in a bank, you can actually grow it over time if you’re smart about it. Also, concepts like dollar cost averaging showed me that you don’t have to be rich to start investing, you just have to be consistent. Personally, I’ve started trying to be more aware of how I spend money. Even though I don’t have a job yet, I’ve had small amounts of income, and I’ve noticed how easy it is to spend money quickly on things I don’t really need. That made me realize the importance of budgeting and setting priorities. I’ve been trying to save more instead of spending everything right away, even if it’s just a small amount, because I know those habits will matter more in the future. Looking ahead, I plan to use what I’ve learned to build a more stable and secure future for myself. One of my main goals is to avoid unnecessary debt, especially when it comes to things like credit cards or student loans. I want to make smart decisions, like only borrowing what I actually need and making sure I understand the terms before agreeing to anything. I also plan to start investing as early as possible, even if it’s just a little bit at first, because I know that time is one of the biggest advantages when it comes to growing money. Another thing I want to focus on is creating and sticking to a budget once I have a steady income. I don’t want to just make money, I want to manage it well. That means tracking my spending, saving for emergencies, and setting financial goals, like buying a car, paying for college, or eventually getting my own place. I also want to keep learning, because financial education doesn’t really stop. The more I understand, the better decisions I can make. Overall, my experience with finances is still developing, but I’ve already learned that being responsible with money is a skill that can seriously impact your future. By applying what I’ve learned now and continuing to build on it, I feel more confident that I can make smarter financial choices and set myself up for long-term success.
