RISE UP, the Rape Incest Survivor Empowerment United Project, believes in a community where every individual is free from sexual violence.

Sadly, sexual violence and assault are all too common, leading many people to live in fear or endure lifelong trauma. Social work professionals are crucial in helping to prevent, identify, and address sexual violence, helping to shape the future of their communities and make them safer.

This scholarship seeks to support students who are pursuing careers in fields related to social work and striving to make a difference.

Any high school, undergraduate, or graduate student who is a Missouri resident pursuing social work or a related field may apply for this scholarship opportunity. First-generation students, underrepresented minorities, and single parents are strongly encouraged to apply.

I am passionate about social work because my life has been shaped by experiences that demanded resilience long before I had the language to name it. Between the ages of four and six, I was sexually abused and physically beaten by my three stepbrothers. During a time when children should feel safe and protected, I learned what it meant to endure harm in silence. That early trauma profoundly influenced my understanding of vulnerability, justice, and the importance of advocacy. While I was once a victim, I now stand as a survivor, and forever a protector. My passion for social work comes from both lived experience and intentional learning. I understand firsthand the lasting impact of sexual violence, including how trauma can affect identity, trust, and mental health across a lifetime. I also understand the power of being believed, supported, and given the tools to heal. These experiences have fueled my determination to pursue a career in social work so that I can support others with empathy, cultural humility, and trauma-informed care. I advocate not only from academic knowledge, but from lived truth. Through my social work career, I plan to make a meaningful difference by supporting survivors of sexual violence and contributing to systemic change. I am committed to working with individuals, families, and communities to break cycles of abuse and silence. I hope to engage in prevention education, crisis intervention, and survivor advocacy, while also addressing the social and institutional barriers that often prevent survivors from seeking help. My goal is to help create environments where survivors feel safe, empowered, and respected. Addressing sexual violence is central to my professional mission. I am actively working to challenge stigma, promote awareness, and support healing by speaking openly about survivor experiences and advocating for trauma-responsive services. I believe that prevention begins with education and accountability, and that healing requires compassion, consistency, and access to resources. I strive to embody these values in my interactions and future practice, ensuring that survivors are treated with dignity rather than judgment. Social work is more than a profession to me, it is a calling rooted in resilience and hope. I believe deeply in the ability of individuals to heal when given the right support, and in the responsibility of social workers to stand alongside those who have been harmed. My past does not define my limitations; it defines my purpose. Through social work, I intend to transform pain into protection, advocacy, and lasting change for survivors of sexual violence and beyond.

Social work is more than a career choice for me. It is a purpose shaped by my values, experiences, and desire to help others feel seen, safe, and supported. I am passionate about social work because I believe people deserve compassion during their most vulnerable moments, and I want to be someone who shows up when it matters most. I have always been drawn to helping roles because I grew up understanding the importance of community and responsibility toward others. I learned early on that silence often protects harm, while support and advocacy create change. This belief is what led me to pursue social work and continues to motivate me as I work toward becoming a professional who not only listens, but takes action. One issue I am especially committed to addressing through my social work career is sexual violence. Sexual violence is a reality that affects people across all backgrounds, yet survivors are often left feeling unheard or blamed when they seek help. Through my coursework, campus training, and conversations with peers, I have seen how fear, stigma, and power dynamics make it difficult for survivors to speak up. These experiences have strengthened my desire to be an advocate who prioritizes empathy, accountability, and healing. As a future social worker, I want to be involved in both prevention and survivor support. I plan to work with young adults and student populations to promote conversations around consent, healthy relationships, and respect. I believe education plays a powerful role in preventing harm before it happens. I also want to support survivors directly by helping them access counseling, legal resources, and safe spaces where they can begin to heal without judgment. My long-term goal is to work in environments where I can help create safer systems whether in schools, athletic programs, or community organizations by advocating for policies that protect individuals rather than silence them. I want to be the kind of social worker who challenges harmful norms and stands with survivors, even when it is uncomfortable. I am deeply committed to my education and personal growth because I understand the responsibility that comes with this profession. I strive to reflect the values of integrity, empathy, and accountability in everything I do. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue my education with greater focus and stability, bringing me closer to a career dedicated to service and change. At the heart of my goals is a simple truth, I want to help people feel less alone. Through social work, I hope to make a difference by turning compassion into action and ensuring that those impacted by sexual violence are supported, believed, and empowered.
