Polish American Women's Scholarship

My Polish heritage is not simply part of my identity; it is the foundation of who I am and the legacy I hope to represent. As a first-generation daughter of two Polish immigrants, I was raised to embrace my culture with pride and to never forget where my roots lie. My parents taught me that our language, traditions, and values were not something to leave behind when building a life in America, but something to preserve and share with others. Throughout high school and college, I continue to put this message into action. After graduating from my local Polish school, I returned as a teacher for students in kindergarten through third grade. Through games, reading, writing, and conversation, I helped young children strengthen their Polish language skills while encouraging them to appreciate the culture they inherited. I also coached recreational soccer for children ages five to ten and played for a Polish soccer club, later volunteering as an athletic trainer for a youth special needs sports program in Poland. I found that the most meaningful way to honor my heritage was by investing in the next generation. As I began college, I looked for new ways to strengthen that connection. At Boston University, I have worked to establish an Eastern European student organization that celebrates the diverse cultures of the region while creating a sense of belonging for students far from home. My passion for serving immigrant communities also led me to volunteer with the International Institute of New England, where I help newcomers, including Polish immigrants, practice English and navigate life in the United States. Every conversation reminds me of my parents' own journey and allows me to provide the support I wish they had when they first arrived in America. Throughout this journey, the woman who has shaped me most is my mother. After earning her music degree in Kraków, she immigrated to the United States and courageously built a new career despite the challenges of a new language and culture. She taught herself how to teach piano in English and eventually opened her own studio, where she now inspires more than fifty students. Yet no matter how successful she became, she never let go of her Polish identity. She incorporates Polish music and history into her lessons and also volunteers at our local Polish school, where she organizes the annual Jasełka Christmas performances that celebrate Polish traditions through music and storytelling. Watching her preserve our culture while creating opportunities for others has shown me that resilience and heritage can coexist with ambition. I strive to embody the perseverance, compassion, and dedication demonstrated by my mother and the generations of Polish women before her. To me, being a Polish-American woman means honoring the sacrifices that made my opportunities possible while using those opportunities to uplift others. Now studying Biology, my goal is to become a physician who not only provides exceptional medical care but also recognizes the importance of culture, language, and personal background in every patient's experience. I was fortunate to grow up in a community where, despite language barriers, sacrifices, and the distance from family in Poland, I never felt disconnected from my heritage. That sense of belonging is a gift I hope to extend to others. Whether I am teaching a child to speak Polish, helping an immigrant feel at home, or caring for patients in the future, I hope to carry forward the resilience, generosity, and pride that define both my family and my Polish heritage.
