I maintain a strong connection to my Polish heritage through my family, language, faith, and traditions. I was born in Lublin, Poland, and immigrated to the United States in 2001 during a time of great uncertainty. Although I have built my life in America, Poland remains an important part of my identity. I regularly speak Polish with family members, celebrate traditional Polish holidays (Wigilia, Wielkanoc, itd.), and prepare Polish meals (pierogi, kopytka, naleśniki, pomidorówka) that remind me of home. My husband has embraced my culture as well, learning about Polish traditions such as Śmigus Dyngus and even picking up words and phrases in the Polish language (“cześć,” “jak się masz?”). Sharing these customs with him has allowed me to preserve my heritage while creating new family traditions of our own. I hope that one day I will be able to pass these traditions, values, and language on to my children so they can remain connected to their Polish roots and appreciate the rich heritage that has shaped our family. My faith is also an important connection to my Polish roots. Growing up, attending church every Sunday was a central part of family life, and I continue to attend a Polish church where I can worship alongside others who share my cultural background. The church community has helped me stay connected to Polish traditions, values, and the sense of belonging that comes from honoring our shared heritage. Many Polish-American families carry stories of resilience, sacrifice, and hard work, and the women in my family exemplify these qualities. My mother and great-grandmother taught me the importance of perseverance, humility, and dedication to family. They faced challenges with strength and determination, always prioritizing the well-being of those they loved. Their sacrifices created opportunities that allowed me to pursue higher education and build a future in the United States. They taught me that success is not measured by personal achievement alone, but by how we use our talents to help others—one of the main reasons I chose medicine. These values have guided me throughout my journey to become a Physician Assistant. Today, I am completing the final year of my clinical education while supporting my family as the wife of a disabled veteran. My experiences have inspired my goal of working within the Veterans Affairs healthcare system, where I hope to provide compassionate, high-quality care to veterans and their families. To me, being a Polish-American woman means honoring the sacrifices of the women who came before me while embracing opportunities they may never have had. I honor their legacy through education, service, and perseverance. At the same time, I strive to represent a modern vision of Polish-American womanhood—one that values cultural heritage while pursuing professional goals, leadership, and community service. My journey from Poland to the United States has taught me that heritage is not only something we remember; it is something we live, share, and pass on to future generations.
