Becoming a teen mom at 17 reshaped my entire outlook on life and my educational journey. At a time when most people are focused on themselves, I had to quickly learn how to prioritize, sacrifice, and think beyond the present moment. My children became my reason to keep going, even when things felt overwhelming. Balancing school, parenting, and everyday responsibilities was not easy. There were times when I felt exhausted and uncertain about how I would move forward, but becoming a mother gave me a level of determination I did not have before. I understood that my education was not just about me anymore; it was about creating stability, opportunity, and a better future for my children. Being a teen mom also taught me resilience in a very real way. I had to grow up quickly, manage my time carefully, and stay focused despite distractions and challenges. When I later entered LPN school, I carried that same determination with me. However, my journey was further challenged when my father became ill, and I had to step away from my program to care for him. Even now, I continue to carry significant family responsibilities as a caretaker for my mother as well. Balancing these roles has not been easy, but it has strengthened my sense of responsibility and deepened my compassion. Although these experiences created setbacks, they reinforced the values I had already developed: putting family first, staying strong during hard times, and not giving up on my long-term goals. My experience as both a teen mom and a caregiver has directly influenced my decision to pursue a career in nursing. Through caring for my father during his illness and continuing to support my mother, I have seen firsthand how important compassionate, attentive healthcare is. I realized that nursing is not just about treating a condition; it is about supporting people and their families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. These experiences deepened my desire to be in a profession where I can make a meaningful difference. I chose nursing because it aligns with who I am at my core. I have developed patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure through my life experiences. I understand what it means to care for someone beyond their physical needs, and I want to bring that level of compassion into my career. Nursing will allow me to combine my personal experiences with professional skills to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. Looking toward the future, my goals are rooted in both personal and professional growth. I want to build a stable and fulfilling life for my children, showing them that hard work and perseverance can lead to success regardless of where you start. I also want to serve my community by providing compassionate care, especially to individuals who may feel overlooked or underserved. Ultimately, my journey as a teen mom and caregiver has not held me back; it has pushed me forward with purpose, strength, and a clear vision for the future.

Becoming a mother at seventeen was not what I envisioned for myself, but it became the catalyst for a life defined by resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering ambition. When I gave birth to my daughter McKayla, I was still a teenager in Barbados with limited opportunities and a strong desire to create a better future, not only for myself but for the child I now held in my arms. That moment was the beginning of a journey that would take me across borders, through challenges, and ultimately toward my dream of becoming a nurse. Raised in a small island nation, I knew that opportunities for upward mobility were few and far between. Determined to give my daughter a life filled with more promise, I made the difficult decision to leave everything familiar behind and migrate to the United States. Starting over was not easy. I juggled work and school while navigating a new culture, all while raising a child on my own. Despite the hardships, I never lost sight of my goal: to earn a nursing degree and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My path led me to join the military, where I found both structure and support. The discipline and training I received not only molded my character but also helped me develop time management, leadership, and empathy, qualities that are indispensable in nursing. Throughout my service, I continued to pursue my education, completing the prerequisites needed for nursing school while maintaining my responsibilities as a mother and service member. Now, years later, that teenage mother from Barbados is proud to say she has been accepted into three nursing programs. Even more special, this year marks a full-circle moment. My daughter McKayla, now seventeen herself, and I will be starting our college journeys together. Sharing this milestone with her is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of breaking generational barriers. I chose nursing because it aligns with everything I’ve fought for: compassion, service, and empowerment. My personal experiences have given me a deep empathy for others, especially underserved populations. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only treats symptoms but sees the whole person, their story, and their struggle. Nursing is more than a career to me; it is a calling born from my own life’s challenges and triumphs. Being a teen mom taught me how to push through adversity with grit and grace. It showed me the value of education, the strength of a mother’s love, and the importance of giving back. Winning this scholarship would not only help me continue my education but also honor the legacy of a woman who, like me, understood what it means to turn struggle into service.
