I am Autumn a 35 year old single mother of 4 children aged 18, 16, 11 and 7. By the age of 18, I was already raising 2 children while balancing school, work and the responsibilities of motherhood. Despite the challenges, I graduated high school. Shortly after in 2009, I obtained my nurse aide certification where I quickly discovered my passion for the geriatric community. I provided in home care from 2009-2013. I then relocated and was employed at an assisted living facility from 2013-2019. I once again relocated and have been at the same long term care facility since 2019. I am dedicated to long term care and serving this vulnerable population with dignity and compassion. In 2023, I obtained my medication aide certificate and by 2025 I graduated with my practical nursing diploma finishing at the top of my class with a 3.17. As a first generation college graduate, I believe in continuing the climb and instilling these values in my children that you can do whatever you put your mind to no matter the obstacles one may face. My long term goal is to become a nurse practitioner. My journey has never been easy but it has taught me determination, empathy and the importance of never giving up on your goals.

Becoming a mother at a young age shaped nearly every part of my educational journey and the goals I now have for my future. My two oldest sons were born when I was sixteen and eighteen years old. I learned responsibility, sacrifice, and perseverance much earlier than most people my age. Although becoming a teen mom came with challenges, it also gave me a sense of purpose and motivated me to create a stable future not only for myself, but for my children as well.
Balancing motherhood, finances, work, and education has never been easy. There were times when it felt overwhelming trying to provide for my children while also building a career and continuing my education. However, becoming a parent at a young age taught me resilience. I quickly learned that giving up was not an option because my children depended on me, especially in 2019 when their father and I divorced. Those experiences built the determination and work ethic that continue to push me forward today.
My journey into healthcare began in 2009 when I started working as a nurse providing in home care. From then, I found fulfillment in helping others feel safe, respected, and cared for during vulnerable moments in their lives. Working with the geriatric population especially touched my heart because many residents simply want compassion, patience, and someone who truly listens to them. Over time, nursing became more than a career choice, it became a calling.
Since 2019, I have worked at the Danville Center for Health and Rehabilitation, a long term care facility, where I have continued growing both professionally and personally. During my time there, I advanced from nurse aide to medication aide and most recently obtained my Licensed Practical Nurse diploma in 2025. Each accomplishment represents years of balancing work, parenting, and school while continuing to push myself toward higher goals.
My experiences as a teen mother directly influenced my decision to pursue nursing because I understand the importance of compassion, support, and encouragement during difficult times. Nursing allows me to provide those things to others. Some of the most rewarding moments come from the relationships I have built with residents. Many tell me they are happy when I am their nurse and that they miss me when I am not working on their unit. Knowing the care I provide positively impacts someone’s day reminds me why I continue pursuing higher education within nursing.
Being a mother has also strengthened my determination to continue advancing my education. I want my children to see firsthand that difficult beginnings do not determine the outcome of your future. I want them to understand that challenges can be overcome through hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Today, I am continuing my education at Sullivan University in the Associate Degree in Nursing program to obtain my Registered Nurse licensure.
Becoming a teen mother did not end my future and 4 kids later they have all inspired and given me a reason to fight for not only my future but theirs too.
Jeune-Mondestin Scholarship
I am applying for this Scholarship as I continue advancing my nursing education and my commitment to the residents and community I have proudly served for many years. My journey in healthcare began in 2009 when I first worked as a CNA providing in home care. From the very beginning, I found purpose in caring for others, especially the geriatric population and that passion has only grown stronger over time.
Since 2019, I have been employed at Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation, a Signature facility that has played a significant role in my professional development. Over the past several years, I have advanced from nurse aide to medication aide and most recently achieved my goal of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in November 2025. Each step has required dedication, resilience and a commitment to continuous growth in both skill and compassion. This has been challenging yet one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my life.
After graduating, I took a brief three month break to carefully evaluate my next steps to accomplish my goals. During that time, I reviewed my previous coursework and researched nursing programs that would best align with my professional goals and responsibilities as a parent. I ultimately chose to continue my education at Sullivan University, where I am currently enrolled into the Associate Degree in Nursing program to obtain my Registered Nurse. This is a milestone that brings me closer to achieving my long term goals.
Balancing full-time work, academic demands, and raising four children, three of whom still live at home, has been both challenging and deeply motivating. My children, a daughter (7), and three boys (11,16,18) inspire me daily to continue pushing forward. I want to show them the value of perseverance, education, and dedication. I remain committed to providing stability and support for them while pursuing my goals.
My inspiration not only comes from my children but also the residents I care for, they never fail to inspire me daily. They express how much they enjoy having me as their nurse, often telling me they miss me when I am not scheduled for their unit or when I am scheduled off. Knowing that the care I provide makes a meaningful difference in their lives reinforces my passion for nursing and drives me to continue growing in my role and within the company to truly make a difference in the lives of those I care for and the care they receive daily.
Receiving this Scholarship would significantly impact my ability to succeed in this next phase of my education. Financial assistance would help reduce the burden of tuition and related expenses while allowing flexibility in my work schedule to meet the demands of nursing school. It would also help offset any potential loss of income during critical academic periods, ensuring I can remain focused on my studies without compromising my responsibilities at home.
More importantly, this scholarship represents an investment in a nurse already deeply rooted in a facility for 6.5 years and committed to long term care service. I take pride in the care I provide and strive every day to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my residents. Advancing my education will allow me to expand my knowledge, improve patient outcomes, and take on greater responsibility within my facility.
I am dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about what I do. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue growing personally and professionally while remaining committed to the organization I have been a part of for so long that has helped to shape my journey.
Organic Formula Shop Single Parent Scholarship
Being a single parent while pursuing a nursing degree has been one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences of my life. Every day requires balancing the responsibilities of motherhood, work, and school while continuing to show up for my children, my residents, and my future goals. Although the journey has not been easy, it has strengthened my determination to continue building a better future for my family through education and nursing.
I am currently continuing my education at Sullivan University, where I am completing my Associate Degree in Nursing program to obtain my Registered Nurse licensure. I have worked in healthcare since 2009, beginning as a CNA providing in home care at Care Givers by Linda until 2013. In 2013 I provided care in an assisted living facility, Morning Pointe until 2019. Since 2019 I have been employed at Danville Center for Health and Rehabilitation. During my time there, I have grown from a nurse aide to medication aide and most recently obtained my Licensed Practical Nurse diploma in 2025. Nursing is not simply a career for me, it is something I genuinely love and feel called to do.
The most challenging part of being both a student and a single parent is trying to give everything and everyone the attention they deserve while never feeling like there are enough hours in the day. Last year, while I was completing nursing school, I also navigated significant challenges at home. One of my sons struggled with severe behavioral issues since 2020 and was repeatedly in and out of treatment facilities. Managing emotional stress, appointments, phone calls, school concerns, and uncertainty while remaining focused academically was incredibly difficult. At the same time, I continued supporting my child with autism, who has made tremendous progress over the years. Staying involved with communication from teachers and maintaining consistency and support at home so he can continue to flourish as he has. Both of these children are now doing exceptionally well, one in his own apartment with a full time job and the other preparing to begin a summer job and looking into colleges as he enters his final year of high school. Although it was difficult for me to remain focused in school while handling the tasks of motherhood, I somehow managed to do it all with an amazing support system. I have been able to see the hard work, dedication pay off for my two oldest sons and myself as I watch not only them grow but myself too.
Beyond academics and work, three of my children remain active in extracurricular activities that I work hard to support because I know how important those experiences are for their confidence and growth. My two youngest children participate in multiple sports, while my other son is involved in piano. Balancing practices, games, tournaments, school responsibilities, work schedules, and my own coursework often means sacrificing sleep, personal time, and rest. Despite the exhaustion, I continue pushing forward because I want my children to see perseverance, resilience, and dedication modeled in real life.
What motivates me most are both my children and the residents I care for daily. As a mother of four, my daughter, age seven, and my three sons, ages eleven, sixteen, and eighteen, I want to create stability and opportunities for my family while showing my children the value of education and hard work. At work, my residents often tell me how happy they are when I am their nurse and how much they miss me when I am not working their unit. Knowing the care I provide truly impacts others and reminds me why I continue pursuing this path.
Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial burden associated with nursing school and allow me greater flexibility to succeed academically while continuing to care for my family. More importantly, it would help pave the way toward long term stability, career advancement, and a future where I can continue serving others while providing greater opportunities for my children.
