Faith has been the foundation that has carried me through some of the most difficult and uncertain moments of my life. While I have always believed in God, it was during life’s greatest challenges that I truly learned what it means to rely on faith rather than my own understanding. My faith has given me strength when I felt weak, hope when circumstances seemed impossible, and the confidence to continue pursuing my goals even when the path ahead was unclear. One of the most significant moments that shaped my faith was the birth of my son at just 23 weeks gestation. As a parent, there is nothing more frightening than watching your child fight for their life. The days and months that followed were filled with uncertainty, fear, and countless prayers. There were moments when I felt completely overwhelmed and powerless. Yet throughout that journey, my faith reminded me that I was not carrying those burdens alone. I learned to trust God even when I did not have answers. I learned that faith is not the absence of fear but the willingness to keep moving forward despite it. Through every setback, every difficult conversation, and every challenge we faced, I found comfort in prayer and in the belief that God had a purpose for our family’s story. Looking back, I can see His presence in the people who supported us, the healthcare professionals who cared for my son, and the strength He provided when I thought I had none left. My faith has also played a significant role in my educational and professional journey. As a Licensed Practical Nurse pursuing my Registered Nurse degree, I often balance work, school, motherhood, and financial responsibilities. There have been times when exhaustion, stress, and self-doubt made me question whether I could continue. During those moments, my faith reminded me why I started. It encouraged me to persevere, trust the process, and continue working toward the future I hope to build for my family. Faith influences not only how I overcome challenges but also how I care for others. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it is an opportunity to serve. Every patient I encounter is someone who deserves compassion, dignity, and kindness. My faith teaches me to treat people with respect regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances. It reminds me that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact on someone’s life. As I continue my nursing career, I believe my faith will help guide me in making ethical decisions, treating patients with empathy, and maintaining integrity in every aspect of my work. Healthcare can be emotionally demanding, but my faith gives me perspective and purpose. It reminds me that every interaction is an opportunity to provide comfort and support to someone who may be facing one of the hardest days of their life. The values of hard work, perseverance, compassion, and integrity have been shaped by both my faith and my life experiences. As I pursue my education and future career goals, I am committed to carrying those values with me. My faith has helped me overcome obstacles, remain hopeful during difficult times, and continue striving to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I believe it will continue to guide me as I grow both personally and professionally in the years ahead.

What inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field was my personal experience as the mother of a baby born at only 23 weeks premature. During one of the most difficult times of my life, I witnessed firsthand the incredible impact healthcare professionals can have not only on patients, but also on entire families. Watching my son fight for his life while spending countless days in hospitals changed my perspective on healthcare, compassion, and the importance of human connection. That experience ultimately inspired me to dedicate my own life to helping others through nursing. When my son was born extremely premature, my family faced fear, uncertainty, emotional exhaustion, and financial stress. There were many moments when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of what the future would look like for my child. During that time, the nurses and healthcare providers caring for my son became a source of hope and encouragement. They treated him with compassion, celebrated every small victory, and supported our family emotionally during some of our darkest moments. Their kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on me and showed me the true meaning of healthcare. That experience inspired me to pursue nursing because I realized how much of a difference compassionate care can make in someone’s life. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse and am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse. Nursing has become more than just a career to me—it is a calling rooted in empathy, resilience, and service. Every day, I have the opportunity to help people during vulnerable moments in their lives, and I do not take that responsibility lightly. I plan to make a difference through my career by providing compassionate, patient-centered care while advocating for patients and families who may feel scared, unheard, or overwhelmed. I understand firsthand how important emotional support can be during medical challenges because I have experienced it myself. I want patients and families to feel respected, cared for, and supported not only medically, but emotionally as well. My long-term goal is to continue growing within healthcare, particularly in pediatric or neonatal nursing. Caring for children and families is especially meaningful to me because of my own experiences as a mother of a premature child. Families facing medical hardships often need reassurance, understanding, and hope just as much as medical treatment. I want to be the kind of nurse who helps make difficult situations feel a little less overwhelming while providing high-quality care to patients. I also hope to make a difference by being an example of perseverance and determination for others. Balancing motherhood, work, financial responsibilities, and higher education has not been easy, but those challenges have strengthened my empathy and resilience. I want my son to grow up seeing the value of hard work, compassion, and helping others. The medical field is built on more than knowledge and technical skills—it is built on humanity, empathy, and trust. Through my career, I hope to continue positively impacting the lives of patients and families while honoring the healthcare professionals who once helped my own family through one of the hardest times in our lives.

I chose to pursue nursing because of my personal experiences as both a mother and a patient family member during one of the most difficult times of my life. When my son was born at only 23 weeks premature, our lives became centered around hospitals, uncertainty, and fear. Watching such a tiny baby fight for survival completely changed my perspective on healthcare and inspired me to dedicate my life to helping others through nursing. During that experience, I saw firsthand how much nurses impact not only their patients, but entire families. The compassion, patience, and encouragement shown to my son and our family left a lasting impression on me and ultimately inspired my career path. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse and am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse. My desired specialty is pediatric nursing because I feel deeply connected to children and families facing medical challenges. Having experienced the emotional stress and uncertainty that come with caring for a critically ill child, I understand how overwhelming those situations can be for parents. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only provides excellent medical care, but also emotional support and reassurance during difficult moments. What draws me most to pediatric nursing is the resilience children have, even during serious illness or hardship. Despite everything they endure, children continue to show strength, courage, and hope. I also understand that caring for pediatric patients means caring for entire families. Parents often carry emotional, physical, and financial burdens while trying to remain strong for their children. Because of my own experiences, I feel I can relate to families on a deeper level and provide compassionate, patient-centered care. Throughout my journey in healthcare, I have learned that small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference. During my son’s hospitalization, there were nurses who comforted me during difficult nights, celebrated small milestones with our family, and reminded us not to lose hope. Those moments stayed with me and inspired the type of nurse I strive to become. I want families to feel heard, supported, and cared for during some of the hardest moments of their lives. In the future, I hope to continue growing within pediatric healthcare while expanding my skills and knowledge as a Registered Nurse. I am passionate about advocating for vulnerable patients and helping families navigate challenging medical situations with compassion and understanding. My long-term goal is to work in pediatric or neonatal care where I can combine both my personal experiences and professional training to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. Nursing is more than just a career to me—it is a calling shaped by personal hardship, resilience, and gratitude for the healthcare professionals who once cared for my own family. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a profession centered around compassion, service, and healing. I hope to continue honoring that inspiration by providing the same level of care, encouragement, and support to others that once helped my family through one of the most difficult seasons of our lives.

What inspired me to pursue a career in pediatric medicine was my personal experience as the mother of a baby born at only 23 weeks premature. Becoming a parent under those circumstances completely changed my life and gave me a deep appreciation for the healthcare professionals who dedicate themselves to caring for sick children and supporting their families. During one of the most frightening and uncertain times of my life, I witnessed firsthand the incredible impact pediatric healthcare workers can have not only on patients, but also on the people who love them. When my son was born extremely premature, our lives suddenly became centered around hospitals, uncertainty, and fear. Watching such a tiny baby fight every day for survival was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. There were countless moments where I felt emotionally overwhelmed while wondering what the future would look like for my child. During that experience, the nurses, doctors, and specialists caring for my son became a source of comfort, reassurance, and hope for my family. What stood out to me most was the compassion pediatric healthcare professionals showed not only toward my son, but toward me as a mother as well. They celebrated every small victory with us, comforted us during setbacks, answered endless questions with patience, and treated my child with dignity and kindness despite how fragile his condition was. They understood that caring for a sick child also means caring for scared and exhausted parents. Their compassion made an unforgettable impact on me and inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide that same support to other families. That experience ultimately led me into nursing. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse and am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse. My goal is to continue growing within healthcare while focusing on pediatric care because I understand how meaningful compassionate healthcare can be during life’s most vulnerable moments. Families facing pediatric illnesses or medical complications are often carrying emotional, physical, and financial burdens that many people cannot fully understand unless they have lived through it themselves. Because of my experiences, I feel I can connect with families on a deeper level while offering empathy and encouragement during difficult situations. Pediatric medicine is especially meaningful to me because children are incredibly resilient, even in the face of serious illness or hardship. Watching children continue to smile, learn, and fight despite medical challenges is inspiring. At the same time, pediatric healthcare requires patience, compassion, and emotional strength because caring for children means supporting entire families. I want to be the kind of nurse who helps make difficult situations feel a little less overwhelming for both patients and parents. My experiences have shown me how important compassionate healthcare is in improving not only a child’s quality of life, but also the emotional well-being of their family. The healthcare professionals who cared for my son inspired me to dedicate my own life to helping children and families through healthcare. I hope to continue my education and become a nurse who provides not only medical care, but also comfort, understanding, and hope during some of the hardest moments families may ever face.

Education is important to me because it represents opportunity, stability, and the ability to create a better future not only for myself, but for my family as well. As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has come with challenges that many people may not fully understand. There have been moments filled with uncertainty, financial stress, and pressure, but there has also been pride in knowing that I am working toward something greater. Education is more than earning a degree to me—it is about breaking cycles, opening doors, and proving that difficult circumstances do not have to determine someone’s future. Growing up, I understood the value of hard work early in life. My family always encouraged me to pursue my goals, but navigating college and higher education often felt overwhelming because there was no roadmap to follow. Balancing work, financial responsibilities, and family obligations while pursuing a degree has required sacrifice and determination. There were times when the pressure felt heavy, especially while trying to provide for my family and continue my education at the same time. However, those challenges only strengthened my motivation to succeed. One of the most life-changing experiences that shaped my educational journey was becoming a mother to a baby born at only 23 weeks premature. Watching my son fight for his life while facing emotional, financial, and mental stress completely changed my perspective on life. During that time, I spent countless hours in hospitals surrounded by healthcare professionals who not only cared for my son medically, but also supported my family emotionally during one of the hardest moments of our lives. That experience inspired me to pursue nursing because I realized how much compassion and care can impact a family during difficult times. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse and am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse. Nursing has given me purpose because it allows me to help people during vulnerable moments while making a meaningful difference in their lives. I want to continue growing in healthcare so I can provide even better care, advocate for patients, and support families facing medical challenges similar to those my family experienced. The legacy I hope to leave is one of resilience, compassion, and perseverance. I want my son to grow up seeing that no matter how difficult life becomes, it is still possible to continue chasing your goals. I want him to understand the importance of education, hard work, and determination. By becoming the first in my family to pursue higher education, I hope to pave the way for future generations and show them that success is possible even when the journey is difficult. I also hope my legacy extends beyond my family and into the lives of the patients I care for. I want to be remembered as a nurse who treated people with kindness, patience, and compassion. Healthcare is not just about treating illnesses; it is about making people feel supported, heard, and cared for during difficult moments. If I can positively impact even a small number of people through my work and inspire others to continue pursuing their dreams despite obstacles, then I will feel that I have left a meaningful legacy. Education has given me hope for a better future and the chance to create opportunities that previous generations in my family may not have had. Through perseverance, compassion, and dedication, I hope to continue building a life that makes my family proud while helping others along the way.

“‘The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.’ — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations” Marcus Aurelius’ statement, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way,” expresses the Stoic belief that hardship is not separate from growth, but rather the very thing that creates it. At first glance, the quote appears to simply encourage perseverance. However, its deeper meaning is that obstacles are not interruptions to life’s purpose; they are the process through which purpose is fulfilled. Aurelius suggests that adversity forces people to develop strength, wisdom, patience, and resilience that could not exist without struggle. Rather than avoiding pain or difficulty, individuals must transform hardship into an opportunity for growth. The obstacle itself becomes the teacher. This philosophy remains powerful because human beings naturally view challenges as barriers that prevent success or happiness. Most people see suffering as evidence that something has gone wrong. Aurelius rejects this mindset completely. Instead, he argues that obstacles create the conditions necessary for personal transformation. Without resistance, courage cannot exist. Without failure, perseverance has no meaning. Without hardship, people may never discover their true capabilities. The Stoic worldview therefore reframes suffering from something meaningless into something deeply constructive. Aurelius’ use of the phrase “becomes the way” is particularly significant because it implies that there is no alternate path around struggle. The obstacle is not merely an inconvenience along the journey; it is the journey itself. Many people spend their lives waiting for perfect circumstances before pursuing goals or happiness. They believe life will begin once pain, fear, uncertainty, or financial hardship disappear. Aurelius argues the opposite. Human growth occurs precisely because of those conditions, not after them. Difficulty shapes character in ways comfort never can. This quote resonates strongly in modern life because society often promotes the illusion that successful people achieve greatness through talent or luck alone. Social media especially creates carefully edited versions of success that hide sacrifice, failure, grief, and exhaustion. Aurelius reminds readers that struggle is universal and unavoidable. What separates people is not whether they experience hardship, but how they respond to it. Obstacles can either destroy motivation or refine it. The meaning of suffering depends largely on the interpretation people assign to it. This philosophy also contains an important psychological truth. Human beings cannot control many external events, but they can control how they interpret and respond to those events. Stoicism teaches that suffering often intensifies when people resist reality or obsess over circumstances outside their control. Aurelius instead emphasizes adaptability. When faced with setbacks, individuals should ask not, “Why is this happening to me?” but rather, “What can this teach me?” In doing so, adversity becomes productive rather than paralyzing. The quote also challenges the modern fear of discomfort. In contemporary culture, convenience and comfort are often treated as the highest goals. People avoid emotional pain, difficult conversations, uncertainty, and failure whenever possible. Yet Aurelius suggests that excessive comfort weakens character because it removes opportunities for growth. Strength develops through resistance, much like muscles strengthen under physical strain. Emotional resilience operates similarly. People who endure hardship often emerge with deeper empathy, wisdom, and perspective because suffering forces them to confront truths about themselves and the world. Another important aspect of this passage is its rejection of victimhood. Aurelius does not deny suffering or pretend that pain is easy. Instead, he argues that individuals retain agency even during hardship. Obstacles do not determine a person’s identity; responses to those obstacles do. This distinction is essential because it transforms adversity from something purely destructive into something potentially meaningful. The Stoic perspective empowers individuals to reclaim control over their mindset even when external circumstances remain difficult. This idea can be applied to countless areas of life. Students struggling financially while pursuing education may initially see their hardships as disadvantages. Yet those experiences often create discipline, gratitude, and determination that others may never develop. Someone recovering from illness may discover a deeper appreciation for life. A person experiencing grief may become more compassionate toward others’ pain. In each case, the obstacle reshapes the individual and ultimately becomes part of their strength. The quote is also deeply connected to the concept of identity. Human beings are often defined less by achievements than by what they endure and overcome. History consistently remembers individuals who transformed suffering into purpose. Leaders, activists, writers, and innovators frequently emerged from circumstances marked by struggle rather than comfort. Aurelius himself wrote Meditations while leading Rome during war, plague, and political instability. His philosophy was not abstract theory created in peace and luxury; it was developed through direct confrontation with hardship. This gives his words enduring credibility. Furthermore, Aurelius’ statement contains spiritual significance. The quote implies that life itself may possess hidden order or meaning even during painful experiences. Hardship often appears chaotic while it is happening, yet many people later recognize that their greatest difficulties shaped them in necessary ways. This retrospective understanding reinforces Aurelius’ belief that obstacles can become transformative rather than purely destructive. Pain frequently reveals strengths people did not know they possessed. The enduring power of this quote lies in its realism. Aurelius does not promise an easy life, nor does he offer false optimism. Instead, he provides a framework for enduring suffering with dignity and purpose. His philosophy acknowledges that adversity is unavoidable, but it insists that suffering can still produce wisdom, resilience, and growth. This perspective remains relevant because every generation encounters hardship in different forms—financial instability, illness, grief, failure, uncertainty, or fear. The human condition changes very little across time. Ultimately, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way” teaches that obstacles are not detours from life’s purpose but essential components of it. Marcus Aurelius argues that adversity shapes character, reveals inner strength, and creates opportunities for transformation that comfort never could. The quote challenges readers to reinterpret hardship not as evidence of failure, but as the process through which resilience, wisdom, and purpose are formed. In doing so, Aurelius offers a timeless reminder that growth is rarely found in ease. Instead, it emerges from the very struggles people most wish to avoid.

I chose to pursue a career in healthcare because I have personally experienced how life-changing compassionate medical care can be during difficult moments. Healthcare is more than just a profession to me—it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people who are vulnerable, afraid, or facing challenges they never expected. My experiences as both a patient family member and a healthcare worker inspired me to pursue nursing and continue my education so I can better serve others. One of the most impactful experiences in my life was becoming a mother to a baby born at only 23 weeks premature. During that time, my family spent countless days in hospitals facing uncertainty, fear, emotional stress, and financial hardship. Watching my son fight for his life completely changed my perspective on healthcare and the people who work within it. I saw firsthand how nurses not only cared for patients medically, but also supported families emotionally during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Small acts of kindness, encouragement, and compassion made an enormous difference for my family when we felt overwhelmed and exhausted. That experience inspired me to pursue nursing because I wanted to become the kind of healthcare professional who helps others feel supported during difficult situations. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse, and every day I am reminded why I chose this field. Nursing allows me to care for people physically, emotionally, and mentally while helping them maintain dignity during vulnerable moments. Whether I am assisting patients with daily activities, providing comfort to someone who feels scared, or supporting families through difficult news, I know I am making a positive impact in someone’s life. I am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse because I want to expand my knowledge, grow professionally, and provide an even greater level of care to my patients. As someone who comes from a lower socioeconomic background and is navigating higher education while balancing work, motherhood, and financial responsibilities, this journey has not been easy. However, those challenges have only strengthened my determination. I understand how difficult life can be for many families, especially those struggling financially or facing medical hardships. Because of this, I strive to care for every patient with empathy, patience, and understanding. In the future, I hope to use my nursing degree to advocate for patients and provide compassionate, patient-centered care. I am especially passionate about helping vulnerable populations, including children, families, and individuals facing serious medical challenges. I want patients and families to feel heard, respected, and supported during their healthcare experiences because I know firsthand how important that support can be. I also hope to inspire others who may come from difficult backgrounds or feel limited by financial obstacles. As a first-generation college student pursuing a healthcare degree, I understand how overwhelming higher education can sometimes feel. My goal is to show others that with hard work, perseverance, and determination, it is possible to overcome challenges and create a better future. Healthcare has given me purpose and strengthened my desire to help others during life’s most difficult moments. Through nursing, I hope to continue making a positive difference in the lives of patients and families while building a stable and meaningful future for my own family as well.

Faith is the foundation of how I live my life and the reason I continue pushing forward through difficult seasons. As a Christian, I believe every life has value and purpose, from the very beginning to the very end. My faith has shaped the way I treat others, the choices I make, and the career path I am pursuing in healthcare. It has also strengthened my belief in protecting and advocating for life, especially during moments when I personally experienced fear, uncertainty, and hardship. One of the most life-changing experiences I have faced was becoming a mother to a baby born at only 23 weeks. During that time, I spent countless days praying, hoping, and trusting God while my son fought for his life. Doctors explained the risks and challenges that came with extreme prematurity, and there were moments filled with fear and uncertainty. Watching such a tiny baby fight so hard to survive completely changed my perspective on life. It reminded me that life is precious, fragile, and worthy of protection no matter how difficult the circumstances may seem. That experience deepened both my faith and my pro-life beliefs. I witnessed firsthand the strength and value of a life that many people may have considered impossible to survive. Seeing my son continue fighting despite overwhelming odds strengthened my belief that every child deserves love, compassion, and a chance at life. My faith helped carry me through those difficult months and reminded me to trust God even when I felt emotionally exhausted and afraid. I actively live out my faith daily by trying to serve others with kindness, compassion, and patience. Working as a Licensed Practical Nurse has given me the opportunity to care for people during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Whether I am helping a patient who feels scared, comforting a family member, or simply listening to someone who feels alone, I try to reflect God’s love through the way I care for others. I believe being pro-life extends beyond birth—it means valuing human life at every stage and treating every person with dignity and respect. My faith has also influenced my future goals and career path. I am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse because I want to make a greater impact in healthcare and provide the best possible care to my patients. I hope to work with mothers, babies, families, and vulnerable patients while offering both emotional and physical support during difficult times. My experiences as both a mother and a nurse have shown me how important compassionate healthcare professionals can be during life-changing situations. Education is important to me because it will allow me to continue advocating for and protecting life through my career. I want to use my knowledge and experience to support patients and families with compassion, encouragement, and understanding. I also hope to be an example to others by showing that faith, perseverance, and love can help people overcome even the hardest circumstances. Although life has not always been easy, my faith has given me strength, hope, and purpose. It continues to guide me every day as I work toward my goals, care for others, and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of the people around me.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has affected my life in ways that many people never saw from the outside. Like many others, I learned early on how to continue functioning even while silently carrying stress, anxiety, grief, and emotional exhaustion. Between balancing work, family responsibilities, financial struggles, and personal hardships, there were times when I felt overwhelmed mentally and emotionally. However, those experiences also shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate person and inspired my desire to pursue higher education and a career centered around helping others. One of the most difficult experiences of my life was becoming a mother to a baby born at only 23 weeks. Watching my son fight for his life while spending countless days in hospitals and worrying about his future took an enormous toll on my mental health. There were moments filled with fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and helplessness. At the same time, I still had to remain strong for my family and continue moving forward financially and emotionally. The stress of medical bills, lack of sleep, and the emotional trauma surrounding such a fragile situation impacted me deeply. During that time, I realized how important mental health support truly is. Many people assume strength means hiding your struggles, but I learned that strength also means continuing to fight even when you feel emotionally drained. There were days when I doubted myself or felt consumed by stress, yet I kept going because my son depended on me. That experience changed me forever. It taught me resilience, patience, empathy, and the importance of emotional support during life’s hardest moments. Working in healthcare has also shown me how common mental health struggles truly are. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, I have cared for patients dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, addiction, and emotional trauma. I have seen how easily mental health can be overlooked when people are focused only on physical illness. Many patients simply need someone who will listen to them, treat them with kindness, and remind them they are not alone. These experiences have strengthened my passion for healthcare and motivated me to continue my education to become a Registered Nurse. My journey with mental health has also taught me the importance of perseverance. Even during stressful seasons of life, I have continued pursuing my goals because I want to create a better future for my family and myself. Higher education represents more than just career advancement to me. It represents stability, growth, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I want to become the kind of nurse who not only provides medical care, but also offers compassion and emotional support to patients and families facing difficult situations. Mental health struggles are often invisible, which is why open conversations and support systems are so important. Many people suffer silently because they fear judgment or believe they must handle everything alone. I hope that by sharing my experiences and continuing my education, I can help reduce stigma surrounding mental health while encouraging others to seek help and support when they need it. Although my experiences have been challenging, they have also made me stronger and more determined. They have taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of caring for both physical and emotional well-being. I plan to carry those lessons with me throughout my nursing career so I can positively impact the lives of the patients and families I serve.

Faith has played one of the biggest roles in my life, especially during the moments that tested me the most. There have been many times when life felt overwhelming, and without my faith, I do not know how I would have made it through. Faith has given me strength during difficult seasons, reminded me to keep moving forward when I wanted to give up, and taught me to trust that there is a purpose behind every struggle I have faced. It has shaped not only the person I am today, but also the goals I have for my future. One of the hardest experiences of my life was becoming a mother to a premature baby born at only 23 weeks. Watching my son fight for his life completely changed my perspective on life, perseverance, and the importance of compassionate healthcare. The emotional and financial stress that came with long hospital stays, medical bills, uncertainty, and fear could have easily broken me. During that time, my faith became my foundation. I prayed constantly for strength, healing, and guidance. Even when I was exhausted mentally and physically, my faith reminded me that I was not alone and that I needed to continue fighting for my son and our future. That experience also inspired me academically and professionally. I currently work as a Licensed Practical Nurse, and caring for others has become more than just a career for me—it is a calling. Being on both sides of healthcare, as a mother depending on nurses and as a nurse caring for patients myself, has shown me how much compassion, patience, and kindness matter. I have seen firsthand how healthcare professionals can impact someone’s life during their most vulnerable moments. Because of this, I am continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse so I can expand my knowledge, grow professionally, and provide an even greater level of care to my patients. My faith continues to motivate me throughout my educational journey. Balancing work, motherhood, financial responsibilities, and school is not easy, but I believe every sacrifice I make now is building a better future for my family. Faith reminds me to stay disciplined, grateful, and determined even when life becomes stressful. It has also taught me resilience. Every obstacle I have faced has pushed me to work harder rather than give up. In addition to faith, my son has been my greatest motivation to pursue higher education. I want him to grow up seeing the value of hard work, perseverance, and education. I want to show him that no matter how difficult life becomes, it is still possible to chase your goals and create a better future. My family and personal experiences have also inspired me to keep striving for more. Losing loved ones and watching family members battle illness has strengthened my desire to help others through healthcare and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My long-term goal is to continue advancing in nursing while providing stability and opportunities for my family. I hope to become the kind of nurse who not only cares for patients medically but also emotionally and spiritually during difficult moments in their lives. Through faith, determination, and education, I believe I can continue turning difficult experiences into motivation to help others.
    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I decided to pursue a career in healthcare because I have always wanted to help people during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments of their lives. Healthcare is more than diagnosing illnesses or administering treatments; it is about compassion, advocacy, and making patients feel seen, heard, and cared for. I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful impact every day while building strong connections with patients and their families. Nursing has given me the opportunity to do exactly that, and it continues to inspire me to grow both personally and professionally. One of the biggest reasons I chose healthcare was because of my own personal experiences with the medical field. My son was born extremely premature at only 23 weeks, and our family spent a significant amount of time in the hospital during his care. During one of the most stressful and emotional periods of my life, nurses became a source of comfort, reassurance, and strength. They not only cared for my son medically, but they also supported me emotionally as a mother who was terrified and overwhelmed. Their compassion, patience, and dedication inspired me deeply and showed me the powerful difference healthcare workers can make in the lives of patients and families. Another experience that strengthened my passion for healthcare was helping care for my uncle during his battle with lung cancer. I accompanied him to appointments, supported him through treatments, and witnessed firsthand how important compassionate nurses are during difficult times. The nurses who cared for him treated him with dignity and kindness while also supporting our family emotionally. Watching the impact they had on his journey reinforced my desire to continue pursuing nursing and to become someone patients can trust and depend on. As a woman in healthcare, I hope to make a difference by advocating for compassionate, patient-centered care while encouraging and supporting others around me. Women bring valuable strengths to healthcare, including empathy, communication, resilience, and emotional understanding. I believe these qualities help create stronger patient relationships and improve overall care experiences. I want every patient I care for to feel respected, safe, and valued regardless of their circumstances. Currently, I work as a Licensed Practical Nurse while continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse. Balancing school, work, and family responsibilities has not always been easy, but it has taught me determination, perseverance, and time management. Each challenge has strengthened my commitment to this profession and reminded me why I chose healthcare in the first place. In the future, I hope to continue working in a hospital setting where I can expand my clinical skills and provide high-quality care to patients from all walks of life. I also hope to mentor future nurses and encourage other women pursuing careers in healthcare to believe in their abilities despite obstacles they may face. My goal is to use my experiences, compassion, and dedication to make a lasting positive difference in the lives of others while continuing to grow as both a nurse and a leader in healthcare.

Cancer affected my family in a deeply personal way when my uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer and recently passed away from the disease. Watching someone you love go through such a difficult illness changes the way you see life, family, and healthcare. Throughout his illness, I took him to his appointments every week and was able to witness firsthand the emotional, physical, and mental toll cancer takes not only on the patient, but also on the people who love them. Although the experience was heartbreaking, it also taught me valuable lessons about compassion, strength, and the importance of simply being there for someone during their hardest moments. Taking my uncle to his appointments became more than just transportation. It became quality time that I now deeply value. During those drives and appointments, I learned how important support and companionship can be for someone facing a serious illness. Cancer can make a person feel exhausted, afraid, and uncertain about the future, and I realized that even small acts of kindness—sitting beside someone during treatment, listening to their worries, or offering encouragement—can make a meaningful difference. I learned that people do not always need someone to fix their problems; sometimes they just need someone willing to walk beside them through difficult times. Watching my uncle battle lung cancer also gave me a greater appreciation for healthcare workers and the emotional support they provide to patients and families. The nurses and medical staff who cared for him showed compassion, patience, and respect even during the most difficult days. Seeing the way healthcare professionals could bring comfort to patients inspired me even more in my own nursing journey. As a Licensed Practical Nurse pursuing my RN degree, this experience strengthened my desire to continue helping people during vulnerable moments in their lives. One of the biggest lessons I learned through this experience is how precious time and relationships truly are. Cancer has a way of reminding families not to take moments together for granted. Although losing my uncle has been incredibly painful, I am grateful I was able to spend that time with him and support him throughout his journey. Being there for him taught me the importance of showing up for the people you love, even when situations are difficult or emotionally overwhelming. This experience also taught me resilience and empathy. Watching someone you care about struggle with illness changes your perspective and makes you more understanding of the silent battles many people face every day. It reminded me that kindness and compassion matter more than we often realize. I now carry those lessons into both my personal life and my career in healthcare. Although losing my uncle to lung cancer has been one of the hardest experiences my family has faced, it has also shaped me into a stronger and more compassionate person. It strengthened my commitment to nursing and reinforced my desire to provide not only medical care, but also emotional support and comfort to patients and families going through difficult times. His strength and the lessons I learned while caring for him will continue to influence the way I care for others throughout my life and career.

Option 1: Relationships & Impact One of the most meaningful relationships in my life is the relationship I have with my son. Becoming a mother completely changed my perspective on life and shaped me into the person I am today. Through both joyful and difficult moments, my relationship with him has taught me resilience, compassion, patience, and the importance of meaningful human connection. It has also influenced the way I build relationships with others, both personally and professionally, especially as I continue pursuing a career in nursing. My son was born extremely premature at only 23 weeks, and our time in the NICU was one of the most emotional and challenging experiences of my life. During that time, I learned how important support, empathy, and kindness can be when someone is facing fear and uncertainty. Watching healthcare workers care not only for my son but also for my family showed me the true power of human connection. The nurses who cared for him took the time to comfort me, answer my questions, and reassure me during moments when I felt overwhelmed. Their compassion reminded me that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can have the greatest impact on someone’s life. That experience strengthened the bond I have with my son and changed the way I connect with others. It taught me to be more understanding of what people may be going through behind the scenes. I learned that listening, offering encouragement, and simply being present for someone can make a significant difference. Because of this, I try to approach relationships with empathy and patience, whether I am supporting family members, coworkers, friends, or patients. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, those lessons have carried into my professional life as well. Nursing is built on trust and connection, and I believe patients deserve to feel heard, respected, and cared for as individuals. My experiences as a mother have helped me become more compassionate toward patients and families who may be facing difficult situations. I understand firsthand how stressful healthcare experiences can be, which motivates me to provide comfort and emotional support in addition to medical care. I want every patient and family I care for to feel supported the same way my family was supported during our hardest moments. My relationship with my son has also motivated me to continue my education and work toward becoming a registered nurse. Balancing motherhood, work, school, and financial responsibilities has not been easy, especially while managing the medical expenses that came with his early birth. However, every challenge we have faced together has made me stronger and more determined to succeed. My son is my biggest motivation, and I want him to grow up seeing that difficult circumstances do not have to define a person’s future. I want to show him the importance of perseverance, compassion, and hard work. More importantly, my experiences have taught me that meaningful relationships are built through empathy, trust, and genuine care for others. I believe relationships shape who we are and influence the way we treat people in our everyday lives. The bond I share with my son has taught me the value of resilience and human connection, and those lessons continue to guide me every day. Whether in my personal life or future nursing career, I hope to continue building relationships that uplift, support, and positively impact the people around me while reminding others that compassion can truly change someone’s life.

One of the most life-changing experiences I have faced was the premature birth of my son at only 23 weeks.
