Growing up as an English learner and becoming a first-generation college student has given me a unique perspective on the power of empathy, inclusion, and human connection. Throughout my life, I have navigated systems that were not always designed with people like me in mind. These experiences have shaped my passion for helping others feel seen, heard, and valued. As I continue pursuing my degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Resources, I am committed to using my skills, education, and lived experiences to build a more empathetic and understanding global community. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Having faced language barriers and cultural challenges myself, I understand the importance of patience, compassion, and active listening. These qualities have empowered me to support students, families, and colleagues in meaningful ways throughout my professional and personal life. Rather than viewing differences as obstacles, I see them as opportunities to learn from one another and create stronger communities. Currently, I work as a Federal Programs Specialist in a public school district, where I support programs that promote educational equity and student success. In this role, I advocate for multilingual learners, underserved populations, and families who may feel disconnected from educational systems. I have seen firsthand how a simple act of understanding can change a student's confidence, academic success, and future opportunities. These experiences reinforce my belief that empathy is not just a feeling; it is a responsibility that requires action. My studies in psychology have deepened my understanding of human behavior, relationships, and the factors that influence emotional well-being. My name is Jon, and I’m a proud Marine Corps veteran who has dedicated his life to serving others, first in uniform, then through legislation, and now through emergency medical care. Service isn’t just something I’ve done; it’s who I am. After leaving the military, I led a grassroots advocacy campaign that helped pass critical legislation giving veterans the freedom to seek medical care in their communities with a non-profit, an option that saved countless lives and reduced delays in the overburdened VA system. That experience gave me purpose, but I soon realized that while legislative wins were meaningful, my heart was drawn to direct, hands-on service. I didn’t want to help from behind a computer or in a suit, I wanted to be where people needed help the most, in real time. That calling led me to Emergency Medical Services. Today, I work in EMS, where every shift brings opportunities to make a difference. Whether responding to a cardiac arrest, comforting someone in pain, or simply being a steady hand in the middle of chaos, I’ve found a career that allows me to keep serving my community in a deeply personal way. It’s humbling, rewarding, and often intense, and I love it. Outside of work, I volunteer weekly to support those around me, mentoring youth, helping fellow veterans, and staying connected to my community. I believe true leadership is built through service, and I’m committed to giving back however I can. This scholarship would play a critical role in helping me reach the next level in my EMS career. I am currently pursuing additional certifications and training, including paramedic licensure, trauma response courses, and advanced cardiac life support. These programs are expensive, and balancing the financial strain of tuition, equipment, and living expenses while working full-time and volunteering isn’t easy. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more energy on learning, training, and preparing to serve at the highest level possible. It would relieve a significant financial burden, giving me the freedom to invest in myself and grow into the kind of responder my patients, teammates, and community deserve. I’m not asking for this scholarship just to better my own life, I’m asking so I can better the lives of those I serve. Your investment would ripple outward, touching every person I encounter in my work and my community. Growing up, my grandma's health struggles had impacted my decision when it came to deciding on my future career, nursing. Having to witness her confusion in the hospital where no staff spoke any Spanish, and if they did, it was significantly poor, had shown me a critical gap in patient care when it came to the Latin community. It wasn't until I had visited her that I could explain to her what each medication was for, which left her shocked as she did not know what any of them hardly were. This emphasized the need for clearer communication in a healthcare setting. This experience has not only fueled my determination to become a nurse who wants to be a bridge, filling in these gaps for language barriers but also to provide compassionate care to patients of diverse backgrounds. I would never want anyone else to feel like my grandmother, to be left in the dark of her care until a family member came around to translate it. I want to be part of a healthcare community that can offer beneficial translation services and ensure that the patients fully understand the treatment plans and instructions they are given. This will not only help improve their health outcome but will also strengthen the trust between healthcare providers and their patients. My grandmother's experience has shown the importance of cultural sensitivity in healthcare. Every patient deserves and needs to be treated with respect and understanding of their own beliefs. I plan on educating myself on different cultures, aiming to create an all-inclusive environment where such diversity is celebrated and integrated into patient care. I am committed to speaking out for the changes in healthcare systemic policies, including the push for better language access in hospitals and clinics. I want to advocate for the availability of translators. These efforts are important in ensuring all patients, no matter what their background is, receive the proper care. My grandma's constant battle with her illnesses and her struggle with understanding some of her medications due to language barriers have shaped me to go towards nursing. I am determined to use my unique skills and empathy to build a system where the differences in languages are no longer a barrier for patients to receive quality care. By encouraging the system to adopt clearer communication skills, cultural understanding, and changes within its policy, I plan on aiming to contribute to an inclusive and empathetic community for proper patient care.
