The Bronx has the highest rate of poverty in New York City, with one in three residents living below the poverty level and many others facing numerous financial challenges.

As a result, many students who graduate from Bronx high schools have limited funds as they pursue their goal of higher education. The inaccessibility of college degrees due to the rising costs of tuition and living expenses only serves to continue the cycle of poverty and to keep talented students from achieving their dreams.

For these reasons, New York Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman established the Marcus Stroman Scholarship, an initiative of his Height Doesn’t Measure Heart (HDMH) Foundation. The mission of the HDMH Foundation is to create opportunities for in-need youth to rise above their circumstances, realize their greatest potential, and never stop pursuing their dreams. With the creation of the Marcus Stroman Scholarship, Marcus strives to help Bronx-based students access transformative opportunities during their collegiate years.

The Marcus Stroman Scholarship seeks to support ambitious students who are preparing to graduate from a Bronx high school and have been accepted to the college of their dreams. The scholarship will look to identify applicants with true ambition and a drive to succeed in their pursuit for higher education. The scholarship will be awarded to two students who demonstrate an absolute determination to achieve greatness and have their dreams realized without the stress of affording those dreams.

Marcus Stroman’s success in baseball and off the field serves as a prime example of how persistence, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity can lead to real success. Marcus prides much of this success on completing his college degree from Duke University. He has always preached the importance of higher learning and it has inspired his pursuit of establishing this scholarship.

Seniors (12th graders) studying at a high school in the Bronx with a 3.0+ GPA may apply for this scholarship. To apply, students must submit an essay and video describing the college of their dreams, and why they wish to continue their education at that university.

The university of my dreams is Merrimack College. To me Merrimack College is more than simply a university, it's a symbol of hope and an opening to a lot of possibilities that aligns with my goals and ambitions. I always dreamed of a location that would not only feel like home, but also provide the academic challenge and compassionate environment that I needed to grow up and what I felt in the Bronx. Being from Edenwald Projects in the Bronx, I have seen a lot of things and I have always felt like there was something I could be apart of. The outcome of studying business administration with a focus on sports management at Merrimack is amazing. As a young teenager with a love for both business and athletics, this program promises to help me achieve my goals. I played Varsity basketball, baseball, and volleyball throughout my time in high school and the idea of delving into all aspects of sports management while also getting a strong foundation in business excites me beyond words. Merrimack's commitment to delivering a complete education in these subjects is clear, and I am excited to get involved in their prestigious program. This program at Merrimack College has connections and internship opportunities with various athletic organizations, such as the NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, as well as other companies that provide apparel for these organizations and truly my love for sports and business can be combined with the program offered by Merrimack College. Merrimack College's financial package is a definite draw for someone like me. Coming from a household where financial limitations are common, the ability to pursue my education with at least a little bit of hardship taken off my family and I is a blessing I do not take for granted. My mother has worked very hard to provide for my brothers and I, whom are now pursuing their own dreams, and I do not wish to leave my mother with the burden of having to work harder than she already does in order to fund my education. Merrimack's dedication to giving access to education for students from any background reflects their drive to help all in need. I would wish to honestly be able to do anything to give back to my mother being that, only making half of six figures, she was able to raise both me and my brothers in a dangerous environment and guide us through the paths of life so that we can be the successful men we wish to be. Merrimack College would put me in a great position post-graduate that would allow for me to help my mother and be there for her when she is no longer able to work so many hours and give her the ability to rest after fighting so hard for my family. One of the important events in my decision to attend Merrimack was my tour to the campus and engagement with its lively community. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt a sense of belonging and kindness that is difficult to find. I could automatically picture myself walking to classes, or stopping by the dining halls, or even moving into my dorm room. Merrimack's business connections are not only amazing, but also help students reach their full potential. What impressed me the most was the inclusiveness I saw, despite the fact that Hispanics and Blacks were underrepresented. Merrimack's commitment to creating an inclusive environment in which every student feels respected and supported resonated strongly with me, giving me confidence in my decision to make this college my academic home. The honors program at Merrimack is another aspect that sets it apart. Being admitted into the honors program is not just a validation of my academic abilities, but also shows me that they believe in my efforts to becoming a student. In school I participated in all sorts of clubs like varsity basketball, baseball, student council, every honor society provided at my school, senior committee, and the Organization for Latin American Students. I also have completed, over my four years at the school, 1,000 service hours, all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA with multiple AP courses has proven on many occasions my ability to manage time effectively and prioritize things. Merrimack College offers more than just academics, it gives me a change of scenery and learning style that is going to expand my capabilites in ways I never thought would be possible. The Semester at Sea program, in particular, caught my attention as a unique opportunity to explore different countries, engage in diverse cultures, and gain invaluable insights into global business practices. The prospect of networking and gaining firsthand experience in international business is an opportunity I eagerly anticipate seizing. In conclusion, Merrimack College essentially gives me everything I want in a college, from academic excellence, to inclusivity and a supportive community, as well as a variety of opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is not only just a college but a home away from home where I know I can certainly thrive and find my fullest potential. I am excited about the thought of embracing myself during my time at Merrimack College and am committed to making the most of every opportunity it offers.

Life in elementary school was filled with never-ending laughter and smiles. Humor was an overwhelming feeling I enjoyed. Maybe a little too much to the point, I became careless with my academic studies. I wasn’t as interested in classwork as I was in making people laugh. Unfortunately, I was focused on the wrong thing in school which cost me good grades. I was barely passing my classes and the parent-teacher conference was that day too. The night of the parent-teacher conference, my mom tossed my report card on the table and yelled, “I’m fed up with your bad grades! Keep this up and you’ll be sent to D.R. for as long as you have to.” I hit a nerve. As shame filled the room I realized I can kiss my class clown days goodbye and start focusing on my studies. I have tried many methods to get my grades back on track ever since that night. I tried to focus and participate, ask for help from teachers, and got a tutor. But I have to say that the method of asking for help stuck with me. Asking for help from a teacher allowed me to get clarification for a better understanding of a topic. The teacher helped me out but also let me productively struggle as well. These methods allowed me to grasp a deeper understanding of a lesson and do the work assigned to me with no problem. Sticking to my methods and starting to prioritize my academics had me getting good grades and test scores. Once I saw an 80% on my math test I realized that I have what it takes to get good grades. I have to just put in time and effort to get good grades. I was acknowledged for my improvement by my parents and teachers which made me feel good about myself. My teachers recognized my effort and took time out to help me whenever I was struggling. Rising to the challenge as a scholar rather than a class clown was the best decision I made for myself. Being consistent and determined allowed me to become the best version of myself for my siblings and classmates to look up to. Two lessons I learned from overcoming my challenge are that “Hard work pays off” and “There's a time and place for certain things." Ultimately, my academics were more important than maintaining class clown, and this lesson learned is greatly appreciated. Learning this allowed me to realize that I am the future and I want the best for my family and community. There were multiple challenges I faced as I developed into the person I am today. After every obstacle a lesson was gained. With those lessons I learned, I’ve set goals for my future. One of my goals is to attend a high end college that I’ll grow from to become successful. A certain major I’m fond of is architecture and entrepreneurship. My fondness of architecture formed because I am intrigued by unique building designs. Those designs are a form of artwork in my eyes. They are constantly awed over and appreciated. Those buildings stick with people and the community within, they are glue between two or more people. A building where relationships and memories are formed. An idea I liked is that it’s a certain place for people to come back to and reminisce. Another major challenge I faced is Covid-19. During that time my 8th grade graduation and freshmen year was stripped away from me. Despite all of this, I grew a liking for legos. I made any and everything out of legos from my imagination. I’ve made the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Porsche car, Bouquets and so much more. With this passion I realized I could do so much more. I want to make a building with a unique design different from the rest. The reason why I started building is because I viewed my buildings as artwork. I could stare at my work for hours, and be in awe of its delicacy. Also at that time I was in search of a hobby because socializing wasn’t happening any time soon. As the oldest child from two hispanic parents who helped learn to be independent and a leader. It's my role as the older sibling to guide my siblings when my parents are absent. I step up and fill in their shoes. Although I do my due diligence I’m also heavily supported by my parents who wish the absolute best for me. They do everything in their power to provide me with everything I need. That is why I do my absolute best in my academics, college classes, internships and sports to make them proud. To show my parents that all their love and effort isn’t going to waste. I will forever be grateful for them and their advice that helped shape my mind and my character. From being raised to be an independent young woman I realized that I wanted to be my own boss. To have the ability and only rely on myself when needed.Being able to know I got my back is fundamental. With this being said, I seek New York Institute of Technology, that have both architecture and entrepreneurship/finances majors. Based on how society is now it’s beneficial for everyone to have a business under their belt. I’m a great asset to be a part of this college because of my determination to learn and succeed. I’m not a person that blends in with the crowd. I’m different and I’m loud. I will have my voice heard. I’m not afraid to ask questions or for help. I adapt to new situations and settings quickly. Also, I create new habits and routines in order to have good time management skills but to also process information better for my being. All these skills I have and the person I am, concludes that I’ll be a great student to have but to watch thrive on campus.
