Starting a business

Entrepreneurship is a driving force of innovation and economic progress in the world, producing a constant stream of new ideas and products.

Creative and independent individuals who have the ideas, work ethic, and courage necessary to start their own businesses are crucial. Entrepreneurs turn imagination into reality and make the world a better place through their services. However, starting a business is no easy task and can be financially daunting. Society should lift up these dreamers so they can bring their ideas to life.

James A. Oliver graduated from Williamston High School (now Martin County High School) in 2006. James started Oliver Fence Company in 2019. He built his business on principles of honesty, integrity, and quality. He believed his customers should be treated with respect and fairness. He loved interacting with and getting to know all manner of people through his work. James built his business in such a way that after his passing in 2025, Oliver Fence Company could continue to be operated with those same principles.

This memorial scholarship aims to support entrepreneurial-minded students, like James, who are forging their own paths in the world and preparing to start their own businesses. In addition, one of James’ best qualities was his deep desire to serve and care for others and make their lives better. He loved to see people smile and be happy and never had a second thought about helping those in need. We would love to see someone with similar qualities, specifically who is in a service oriented club, scouting, or similar background.

Any high school senior in North Carolina who will pursue trade school or higher education in business management may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they want to start their own business in the future. Preference will be given to students from Martin County High School in Williamston, NC.

To apply, tell us about your goals for owning your business and what kind of business you plan to start.

My ambition for owning my own business comes from a desire to create something meaningful that supports my family and positively impacts my community. I have always been interested in business and entrepreneurship because it allows individuals to turn ideas into reality while creating opportunities for others. One of my biggest goals is to start a bakery with my sister, combining her passion for baking with my interest in business management. Growing up, I watched my sister spend countless hours baking for family gatherings, holidays, and special occasions. Baking has always been more than just a hobby for her—it is something she truly loves and takes pride in. I saw how her baked goods brought people together and created a sense of comfort and happiness. Over time, this inspired me to think about how her talent could become the foundation of a successful business. I believe that turning her passion into a bakery would not only allow her to do what she loves but also give our family a chance to build something lasting together. The bakery we hope to open would focus on fresh, high-quality, and affordable baked goods made daily. Our goal would be to create a welcoming environment where customers feel valued and connected, not just another place to buy food. We want our bakery to become a community space where people can gather, celebrate, and enjoy products made with care. In the future, we also hope to give back by providing job opportunities, especially to young people who want to gain work experience and learn responsibility. In this business partnership, I would take on the responsibility of managing the operations, finances, and marketing. I am interested in studying business so I can learn how to properly budget, manage employees, promote a brand, and make smart financial decisions. My sister would focus on baking, product development, and creativity, ensuring that everything we offer meets high standards. By working together and focusing on our individual strengths, I believe we could build a strong and successful family-owned business. Owning a business also represents independence and long-term stability for me. I want to create a future where I am not only financially secure but also able to support my family and serve as a role model for others. As someone who is motivated and disciplined through both academics and athletics, I understand the importance of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance. These values will guide me as an entrepreneur and business owner. Receiving the James A. Oliver Entrepreneurial Scholarship would help me take an important step toward achieving my goals. It would allow me to further my education, gain valuable business knowledge, and prepare myself for the challenges of entrepreneurship. This scholarship would not only support my academic journey but also help turn a shared dream between my sister and me into a reality. Ultimately, my ambition is to build a bakery that represents passion, dedication, and opportunity for my family and community.
