Education is important to me because it became my foundation during a time when everything else in my life felt uncertain. For most of my life, I identified as an athlete. I played soccer for 12 years and rode horses for 10, and those experiences shaped my confidence, discipline, and sense of purpose. I believed my future would always be connected to that path. However, after developing a sudden autoimmune disorder, my life changed in ways I could not control. I began experiencing weakness, instability, and days where even walking was difficult. I could no longer run, compete, or rely on my body in the same way. At the same time, I was navigating personal challenges, including an unhealthy relationship and instability at home. Everything that once felt certain was suddenly unpredictable. During that time, education became the one constant I could depend on. While my physical abilities and personal circumstances were changing, school gave me structure, stability, and something to work toward. It became more than just academics; it was a sense of direction when I needed it most. Even on days when I felt overwhelmed or uncertain, I still had assignments to complete, goals to reach, and a future I was building piece by piece. Education gave me a way to keep moving forward when it felt like everything else was standing still. Through these experiences, I began to understand that education is not just about learning information, but about creating opportunities. It allowed me to adapt when my original path was no longer possible. I shifted my focus toward graphic design, a field that gives me the ability to be creative and productive regardless of my physical limitations. On days when my body does not cooperate, I can still create, think, and grow. Education has shown me that even when one path closes, another can be built with determination and effort. Education has also shaped my mindset. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and how to succeed despite challenges. Being dual enrolled at Laney High School and Cape Fear Community College while maintaining a strong GPA has proven to me that I am capable of achieving my goals, even in difficult circumstances. It has reinforced the idea that my future is not defined by what I have lost, but by what I choose to build moving forward. The legacy I hope to leave is one of resilience, creativity, and impact. I want to be someone who turns challenges into motivation and uses my experiences to help others feel seen and understood. Through my future career in graphic design, I hope to create work that tells meaningful stories, raises awareness, and connects with people on a deeper level. I want my work to reflect not only creativity, but purpose. Beyond my career, I hope my legacy shows that it is possible to overcome adversity and still succeed. I want to inspire others who may feel limited by their circumstances to keep pushing forward and find their own path. Education has given me the tools to do that, and it is something I will continue to carry with me as I build my future.
    No Limits Athletic Scholarship
I would like to receive this scholarship because my journey as both a student and an athlete has been shaped by challenges I never expected, and I am determined to continue moving forward despite them. Athletics have always been a central part of my life. I played soccer for 12 years and rode horses for 10, and through both, I developed discipline, confidence, and a strong sense of identity. Those experiences taught me how to push through obstacles and stay committed to my goals. However, my path changed when I developed a sudden autoimmune disorder after taking a steroid to treat bronchitis. What began as a routine treatment quickly turned into a condition that affects my strength, stability, and ability to move. Some days I struggle to walk, and I can no longer run the way I once could. Losing the ability to fully participate in the sports I loved was one of the most difficult challenges I have faced. It was not an instant loss, but a gradual realization that my body could no longer keep up with the demands of soccer and horseback riding. At the same time, I went through months of medical uncertainty, including extensive testing, physical therapy, and unanswered questions. Learning to accept these changes while still pushing myself forward required a level of resilience I did not know I had. Despite these challenges, sports continue to shape who I am. Being an athlete is no longer defined by competition for me, but by mindset. It is about showing up, adapting, and continuing to do hard things even when they look different than before. I have carried that mindset into my academics, where I maintain a strong GPA while being dual enrolled in college courses. I have also redirected my focus toward graphic design, a field that allows me to pursue my goals in a way that works with my condition. Through design, I have found a new outlet for creativity, discipline, and growth. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue pursuing both my academic and personal goals without being limited by financial stress. As I prepare to attend college, I plan to study graphic design and eventually build my own business. This scholarship would help support my education, provide access to the tools and resources I need, and give me the opportunity to continue developing my skills. It would also allow me to stay involved in adaptive fitness and continue strengthening my body in ways that are safe and sustainable for me. My experiences have shaped the dreams I am now chasing. In the classroom, I aim to succeed academically and grow within my field. Beyond that, I hope to use my work in graphic design to create meaningful content that tells stories and raises awareness for individuals facing challenges similar to mine. While my journey as an athlete may look different now, I am still committed to pushing forward, growing, and proving that limitations do not define potential. This scholarship would not only support my education, but also reinforce everything I have worked toward. It would allow me to continue building a future that reflects my resilience, adaptability, and determination. I may have had to change my path, but I have not lost my drive to succeed.
    James A. Oliver Entrepreneurial Scholarship
My ambition to own my own business comes from both my personal experiences and the example set by my dad. I have worked alongside him since I was 10 years old, which gave me early exposure to responsibility, discipline, and what it truly takes to run a business. Watching him navigate challenges, interact with customers, and build something from the ground up showed me that success is not just about talent, but consistency and effort. Being involved at such a young age helped me develop a strong work ethic and a mindset focused on independence and growth. At 16, I took what I had learned and started my own business. That experience was a turning point for me because it showed me that I was capable of turning an idea into something real. I learned how to manage my time, communicate professionally, handle responsibility, and stay motivated even when things were difficult. Starting my own business at a young age gave me confidence in my abilities and helped me understand the importance of taking initiative rather than waiting for opportunities to come to me. As I continue to grow, I hope to build a graphic design business that focuses on creativity, storytelling, and impact. I want to create logos, branding, and digital content that not only looks visually appealing but also represents the identity and purpose of the people or businesses I work with. My goal is to work with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and organizations to help them bring their ideas to life and stand out in a competitive world. I see graphic design as more than just visuals; it is a way to communicate meaning and connect with people. Owning my own business is also important to me because it allows me to adapt to my personal circumstances. Due to my health condition, my physical abilities can be unpredictable, so having control over my schedule and work environment gives me the flexibility to continue pursuing my goals without limitations. Instead of seeing this as a setback, I view it as motivation to create a path that works for me. In the future, I hope to expand my business and possibly mentor others who are interested in design or entrepreneurship, especially those who have faced challenges in their own lives. I want to build something that not only supports me, but also inspires others to keep going despite obstacles. Overall, my ambition is to create a successful graphic design business that reflects my creativity, resilience, and determination while making a meaningful impact on others.
