Engineering scholarships

About engineering scholarships

Engineering is a diverse field used to solve many of the problems society deals with on a daily basis. There are many different fields of engineering, from electrical engineering to aerospace engineering the job can vary. To have a career as an engineer you generally must have a bachelor’s degree from accredited programs in an engineering or technology-related field.

Unlike in fields like law or nursing, there is no specific engineering school students have to attend to pursue careers in engineering. For students passionate about innovation, who wish to shape the future of society, engineering is a great field to go into.

Careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are sought after for the expected industry growth and high earning potential. Nearly 140,000 new jobs are expected for engineers from 2016 to 2026. In 2016, engineers had a median annual wage of $91,010. This is more than twice the median wage for all workers.

Though before engineering students can become successful engineers, they must finish their bachelor's degree program. This can prove to be extremely expensive for many students and leads engineering careers to be out of reach for many students. The average cost of tuition and fees at public 4-year colleges in the United States is $9,400 per year. Students who choose to attend a private college or university can expect to pay around four times as much. The average tuition and fees for private colleges cost $36,700 per year. This is why college students across the country need to turn to scholarships as a necessary source of financial aid.

The high demand for engineers makes this expense worth it for many prospective engineering students. From 2016 to 2026, the number of civil engineering jobs is expected to grow by 23%. Civil engineering is the largest engineering occupation. Over this same period, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering jobs are expected to grow by a combined 36%. From 2014 to 2024 the number of biomedical engineering jobs is expected to grow by 23.1%.

In 2018, there were 622,502 full-time engineering students across the United States. Mechanical engineering students accounted for the largest portion of students with a total of 135,672 students in 2018.

There is not much diversity in engineering careers. While 65.4% of students in 2018 who received bachelor's degrees in engineering were White, only 12.4% were Asian, 11.4% were Hispanic, 4.2% were Black, 0.3% were Native American, and 0.2% were Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Though there is a slight upward trend of increasing diversity among students pursuing careers in engineering. In 2017, 11.1% of Hispanic students and 4.1% of Black students received a bachelor's degree in engineering.

This lack of diversity also extends to gender diversity, the engineering field is dominated by men. While most colleges tend to have a majority female student population, women are significantly outnumbered by men in engineering programs. Women made up only 21.9% of engineering degree recipients in 2018.
