Everyone has a story and is deserving of a chance to pursue their dreams and life goals, regardless of their circumstances.

In 2015, Ellen Melinda passed away from Pulmonary Hypertension (PH). She was diagnosed at just thirteen years old and given a prognosis of two-to-six years to live. Despite often being told that her lung disease would make it impossible to live a normal life, Ellen didn't take the time she had for granted. Her curiosity of PH and passion for helping others motivated her to apply for nursing school while participating in multiple clinical trials to help others with the disease. Despite those in the medical field telling her it would be impossible for her to be a nurse, she was persistent and overcame multiple heart failures and temporary blindness along her path to finally graduating Nursing school in 2014 and securing a job as a Nurse in a medical clinic until her passing in 2015. Throughout her 17 years with PH, she maintained a positive outlook in life despite her daily physical challenges with the intention of helping others, providing a positive outlook, and learning as much as she could along the way. She loved history and learning about the medical field.

This scholarship aims to honor the memory of Ellen Melinda by supporting students who share her passion for learning and helping others.

Some of the biggest challenges that I have faced have been living with multiple medical conditions, including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), chronic headaches, Gastroparesis, ADHD, anxiety, and depression. These experiences were incredibly difficult to conquer and live with, but they also shaped who I am today and inspired my dream of becoming a nurse to help others. Like Ellen Melinda, my health journey has been filled with obstacles that have tested my strength and perseverance. There were times when I felt that my diagnosis defined me as a person, when it seemed easier to give up than keep pushing forward. Yet, stories like Ellen's remind me that resilience and purpose can turn pain into something meaningful. Ellen's determination to pursue nursing despite her own health challenges shows that compassion and perseverance can shine even in the face of hardship. Her story gives me hope that I can also turn my struggles into a way to help others. What inspired me to become a nurse is my own medical journey and the challenges I faced growing up without a nurse or doctor who truly understood me. I struggled to find a doctor who wanted to see and treat me. Throughout my health journey, I often felt unseen, unheard, and mistreated as if my pain and experience were not real. Those feelings inspired me to dedicate my life to ensuring that no children feel that same way. I want to be the person in other children's lives that I never had, someone who genuinely listens, cares, and treats every patient with kindness, respect, and empathy. Living with chronic conditions and these challenges has taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of empathy. It also sparked my curiosity about medicine and fueled my passion for helping others. I have always loved learning how the human body works and how medical professionals can improve people's quality of life. I have always had a passion for helping others and making a positive impact on people's lives. My ultimate goal is to specialize in pediatric pain management to ensure that children receive the care, comfort, and understanding that they deserve. My experience motivates me to pursue a path where I can make a difference for children facing similar challenges. Through my nursing career, I hope to provide exceptional, empathetic, compassionate care to children and their families-being someone they can trust during their most difficult moments. I also hope to serve as a voice to advocate for my patients and their families, ensuring they receive the care, support, and understanding that every child deserves. Like Ellen, I want to use my journey as a source of strength and empathy to uplift others rather than a limitation. Ellen Melinda's story deeply resonates with me because, like her, I know firsthand what it feels like to face obstacles that others might see as impossible to overcome. Her legacy reminds me that hardships do not define our limits-it defines our character. Her courage to chase her dreams despite her diagnosis continues to inspire me to never lose sight of my own. Her determination and passion for helping others inspire me to continue pursuing my dreams, no matter how difficult the path may be. I hope to honor her memory by continuing her mission: to help others, spread hope, and prove that compassion and determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
