Higher education is full of many exorbitant and overwhelming costs, with common stressors being tuition, textbooks, and living expenses.

However, the financial burdens of school don’t stop there. Taking necessary board exams after finishing school often comes at a significant cost, especially since most students don’t work or can work only part-time while pursuing their studies, making it especially difficult to come up with the necessary funds.

This scholarship seeks to honor the hard work of occupational therapy students, reflected by their academics and volunteerism, and to support them in their final months of school. The award amount is based on the current NBCOT exam fee that was in place at the time this scholarship became available for application.

Any student in their final semester of the Panola College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program may apply for this scholarship opportunity.

To apply, write an essay telling us why you’re passionate about your chosen career, what your NBCOT study plans are, and what your professional goals are.

I am passionate about becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant because I have always wanted a career that allows me to help people regain their independence and improve their quality of life. I am drawn to the way occupational therapy focuses on the whole person, not just their diagnosis, and helps them return to meaningful daily activities. I believe this profession perfectly combines compassion, problem-solving, and creativity, and I am excited to be part of a field that truly makes a difference in people’s lives. I have taken my studies very seriously from the beginning of the program. I created a binder that organizes all my notes, handouts, and study resources, and I review them regularly. My plan is to continue building on those materials, practice NBCOT-style questions consistently, and use structured study sessions to strengthen areas where I need improvement. I want to go into the board exam feeling confident that I have done everything possible to set myself up for success. After I pass my board exam, I plan to begin working as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant to gain hands-on experience and to help pay for my bachelor’s degree. I am still open to different settings, but right now I feel most interested in working with adults, possibly in an inpatient rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility. I enjoy seeing how therapy can help people rebuild strength and confidence after illness or injury. In the future, I would also like to explore pediatrics and school-based practice because I have always loved working in a school environment and supporting children as they grow and learn. Becoming a COTA is more than just a career goal for me—it is an opportunity to impact lives and continue learning every day. I am grateful for the education I am receiving and motivated to keep working hard toward becoming a skilled, compassionate practitioner.
