Trade schools are often overlooked by young students, but they offer incredible opportunities to create a stable and lucrative career.

Trade schools can equip students with the practical skills and financial support necessary to build their own futures and actively contribute to the economic and social uplift of their local communities. However, there are many immediate upfront costs that can serve as a barrier to entry for prospective students. From the costs of essential equipment and tools to the fees associated with applications and licensing to the expenses of transportation, there are many financial burdens that come with furthering one’s education.

Hello, My name is Kimberly Ramirez. I was born and raised in Colorado, and I recently moved to California. I don’t come from wealth or luxury far from it. I’m the middle child in a family of seven, and I’m the first in my family who is continuing school after high school. My mom came to this country when she was 19, and she had three kids after that. Unfortunately, my dad was never in the picture he left my mom after I was born, which led her to send me and my older siblings to live with my grandma. For six years, my mom didn’t see us. She worked three jobs just to support us and herself. After a while, she remarried, my stepdad and my mom had three more kids my younger siblings. Life with him was hard. He was abusive emotionally, mentally, financially, and at times physically. There were days we didn’t know if there would be food on the table or a roof over our heads. Thankfully, my mom found the strength to leave him, and she is now free. During those years, my older brother was in Mexico, and my older sister joined the military. That left me with the responsibility of taking care of my younger siblings while going to school and working alongside my mom cleaning offices and houses. Those experiences shaped me. They taught me responsibility, resilience, and the value of hard work. The trade I want to study is welding. My mom used to work at a cement factory called CEMEX, where her coworkers became like family to us. One of them became especially important to me a positive male role model, someone who guided me when I didn’t have many people to rely on. Unfortunately, he passed away in an accident at the plant. He was a welder, and he would always take the time to talk to me about life, goals, and the future. One of the last conversations I had with him was about welding. He told me he believed in me, that I would become a good welder maybe not as good as him, but close enough. I miss him dearly every day, and it’s because of him that I decided to pursue welding not just for myself, but for him too. I have prayed for a chance at a better life, for stability, and for a future I can be proud of. I know welding is my path to that. I am the daughter of an immigrant, and all of my mother’s sacrifices, tears, good days, and bad days will not be in vain. Her strength, my family’s struggles, and the people who have believed in me fuel my determination to succeed. I want to work hard, make a life I can be proud of, and honor everyone who helped shape me along the way.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography while raising six children. My family is the center of my life, and they are the biggest motivation behind my education and career goals. Becoming a mother at a young age taught me responsibility, and the importance of creating stability for my children. Every step I take toward my education is a step toward building a better future for them. As a mother, I want my children to see that challenges do not define us, our determination does. Returning to school while raising a large family has required discipline, sacrifice, and long nights of studying, but it has also shown my children the value of education and persistence. I chose to pursue diagnostic medical sonography because it allows me to combine my passion for healthcare with my desire to help others during important and sometimes difficult moments in their lives. Ultrasound plays a critical role in diagnosing medical conditions and I am inspired by the opportunity to provide patients with compassionate care while contributing to accurate diagnoses. Being able to support patients while using advanced technology to improve health outcomes is incredibly meaningful to me. My goal is not only to build a stable career for my family but also to serve my community as a skilled and compassionate sonographer. I want to demonstrate to my children that no matter how demanding life may be, education and determination can open doors. By pursuing this career, I hope to provide financial stability for my family while making a positive impact in the healthcare field. Receiving this opportunity would help ease the financial burden of pursuing my degree and allow me to stay focused on completing my education successfully. More importantly, it would support a mother who is determined to change the trajectory of her family’s future through hard work, education, and dedication.

I grew up in a low-income household, watching my parents, both from Mexico, work day and night to provide a life they never had. I saw their sacrifices, their exhaustion, and the quiet weight of worry, and I knew early that stability wasn’t guaranteed. Mental health struggles were invisible in our home, and for years, I carried anxiety and depression alone. There were days I felt trapped in a body and mind that didn’t cooperate, questioning if I would ever matter or have control over my own life. Then I discovered nails. What began as a small act of creativity became a lifeline. Painting my nails was more than self-expression, it was reclaiming confidence, joy, and control. Each design reminded me that I could create beauty even when everything else felt chaotic. That small act taught me resilience and showed me the power of transformation, both in myself and in others. I realized I wanted to give people the same boost I experienced, to show them that something as simple as self-care can be revolutionary. That’s why I am pursuing cosmetology, with a focus on becoming a nail technician, beginning January 5th, 2026-At Paul Mitchell The school, at Modesto California. This career is more than a craft, it’s a way to achieve independence, stability, and opportunity. Cosmetology will equip me with skills beyond nails: communication, client care, business management, and leadership. It gives me the tools to build a life where I am financially independent, confident, and capable of lifting others as I rise. I want to empower my clients, especially those who may feel unseen, undervalued, or overlooked. Growing up first-generation taught me perseverance. Struggling with mental health taught me empathy and self-discovery. Cosmetology allows me to merge both lessons with my passion, turning creativity into purpose. It’s not just about painting nails, it’s about giving people confidence, hope, and a reminder that they matter. For me, this career is a way to honor my parents’ sacrifices, overcome the limitations of my past, and build a future I can be proud of. I refuse to let my circumstances define me. I am ready to create stability, build skills, and transform both my life and the lives of others. Through cosmetology, I will take the confidence I found in myself and share it with the world; one client, one design, one life at a time.

My name is Carson Ferreira and I am currently enrolled to start the career path of being a lineman at Northwest Lineman College in Idaho. I have been in the program for 15 weeks now and loving every minute of it. Climbing poles has been my favorite part so far. I will also be trained for crane operations and required to obtain my commercial drivers license before the end of the term. I went to high school, in a small town in California. I was also involved in the FFA, as well as Ag mechanics at my high school. Every day after school, on the weekends and when school was out for breaks, I worked in the Ag field for a local farmer in my home town. On my spare time I love to hit the sand on my quad in Pismo, jump the waves at the lake on jet skis, go snowboarding in the winter, and go trap shooting with my family and friends, when weather permits. I really enjoy time outside, which is great for this career path. I have also volunteered to help build barricades in and around my community during last winters storms. In order to start this career path of being a lineman, which took me to another state, I made the hard decision of leaving behind my family and friends and the lifelong feel of a small town. I am also eagerly awaiting this opportunity to better myself, my abilities and start an amazing career. Being a lineman means a lot to me, it has been a dream of mine since I can remember. My family was sad that I moved away and they can’t see me everyday, that they can’t just drive around the corner or to a close town to see me, my mom’s heartbroken. One of my little brothers was excited for me to go so he can have my room while I’m gone, Brothers are the best. They are also so excited for me, and very encouraging, and very proud that I have made the decision to further my education. They want me to do what makes me happy, they tell me that I will be great and I know I will. I am honored to have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. This will help with the financial burden of my tuition as well as my housing since I am far from home, several specialty tools, school uniforms, boots, and… a guys gotta eat. I know that this career path will give me everything that I have ever dreamed of. A trade that is worth pursuing. It will be hard, physical work and I am up for the challenge. Play hard, work harder, but it’s not work when you love what you do, right? Thank you for taking the time to read this and learn a little bit about myself. I hope someday I can help keep my communities lights on, and hey, maybe even yours.
