Travel has always been something that both excites and challenges me, and receiving this $1,000 scholarship would allow me to take a step to a truly transformative experience. I plan to use the scholarship to allow myself to go back to Eberbach, Germany, where I would reunite with my host family. I hope to visit in the winter or fall months, as my previous stay was during the summer. Experiencing a different season would deepen my cultural understanding while allowing me to continue building a meaningful relationship with people who have become incredibly important in my life.
This opportunity matters deeply to me because of my passion for the German language and culture. Through my studies and my time abroad, I have developed a genuine appreciation for Germany's traditions, history, and way of life. Returning to Eberbach would not only strengthen my language skills through immersion but also allow me to reconnect with my host family on a deeper level. They are no longer just people I stayed with, they are a second family to me.
In addition to returning to Germany, I am interested in exploring other parts of Europe, even though I do not yet have specific plans. Looking ahead, I hope to participate in a semester abroad during college. I believe that extended time in another country would push me outside of my comfort zone, challenge my perspectives, and teach me lessons that can't be learned in a classroom.
Travel has already played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Within the United States, I have traveled extensively along the East Coast with my family. I have traveled to Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. This summer, my family will be traveling to Texas. These experiences have instilled a strong appreciation for exploring new places and meeting new people. I have also had the opportunity to travel internationally. Last March, I traveled to London with my orchestra to preform. Over the summer, I also had the opportunity to travel to Germany and Austria in part of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP Exchange) that the school participates in. These experiences were incredibly impactful, allowing me to grow in independence, confidence, and cultural awareness.
This summer, I will have the opportunity to travel to Brazil on a missions trip with my church. I hope that this experience will strengthen my relationship with Christ, deepen my relationships with others, and allow me to serve and learn from the people I meet. Each place that I have visited has broadened my world view perspective and helped shape my identity, and I am eager to continue that growth.
Receiving this scholarship would mean more than just financial assistance, it would represent a belief in my goals and passions. It would help ease the burden of travel expenses and allow me to focus more fully on the cultural and relational aspects of my experience. Most importantly, it would bring me one step closer to becoming a more globally aware, adaptable, and compassionate individual. I am eager to continue learning, connecting, and growing. I believe that this opportunity would play a meaningful role in allowing me to do that as I anticipate my future.
I would use this $1,000 scholarship to save up for a trip to the Middle East when it is safer to travel there. I would most likely travel to the United Arab Emirates due to its reputation for safety among tourists, rich local culture, and its relevance to my future and career goals. Following my high school graduation, I will attend George Mason University to major in International Security and Law with minors in Arabic and German. I have always been interested in the Arabic language and would love the opportunity to fully immerse myself in a new culture, as I have with my German studies in high school. Although I am not entirely sure where my travels will take me at this point, I hope to either participate in a study abroad program while still in college or visit the UAE or Morocco, preferably on my own time, either during school breaks or after graduation. My biggest aspiration is to become a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Therefore, having travel experience and international connections would greatly benefit me in achieving my career goals, as travel is a true personal passion of mine.
I have had the opportunity to travel both nationally and internationally on several occasions. Since I made the decision to study German in eighth grade, I have risen to become the president of German NHS and have participated in the Ephrata-Eberbach GAPP exchange program twice. Having the opportunity to visit my hometown's sister city, a place I had heard so much about from my own parents, was a great experience. In addition to being able to form lasting bonds with not one, but two host families, I also had the opportunity to reconnect with my mother's host family, visiting with them twice in two years. It was amazing to be able to really get to understand how people in a foreign country think and live, while simultaneously strengthening my German language skills. Before taking part in the German exchange, I had traveled to both British Columbia and Quebec, as well as 29 out of 50 of the United States. Some of my favorite places within the US I have seen are the Redwood forests, the Rocky Mountains, and the Florida Keys. Although there were not as many language barriers other than French-speaking Canada in my other travels, I believe that it is equally important to explore nature and experience a change of scenery at least once in a while. Experiencing different landscapes and climates has sparked a passion within me for protecting wildlife and fragile ecosystems that I may not have considered otherwise.
Receiving this scholarship would mean the world to me because it would enable me to see it. Although I would simply like to have the funds to be able to go on leisurely vacations, that is not the core of my passion for travel. I want nothing more than to have the financial independence to reconnect with friends in various countries and immerse myself in foreign cultures, since my ability to do so has been previously limited. Not only would this scholarship grant me the opportunity to travel to nations related to my passions and academic future, but it would also help me to grow personally and form meaningful connections with people with experiences vastly different from mine, and hopefully even in their own tongues. I am always striving to learn more about the world around me and open myself up to a new point of view, and having the means to do so would help make my dreams a reality.
With this scholarship of $1000, I would be able to put it towards a trip on my own to Guatemala. If I were able to choose anywhere to travel with this money I would choose Guatemala as it is my home country. I was adopted into an American family at the age of 8 months. I have never visited as it isn't that safe of a country, and I also haven't had the funds for it. With this money, I would have the opportunities to learn about my culture that has been absent from my life. I would go as soon as possible since learning about my home country is something incredibly important and meaningful to me. I have researched Guatemala through my AP Spanish and Culture assignments, but I know traveling in real life would be life changing for me. Experiencing it in real time rather than looking at pictures would be exhilarating, and I know I would be one step closer to that dream with the help of this scholarship.
I have traveled numerous times before nationally, and only once internationally. My drive for exploration and travel stems from my family. Every year we go to a new state whether it be on a road trip or plane. I have visited Arizona, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, and Maine. In the summer of 2024, I had to opportunity to travel to Costa Rica with my high school as well. That was the first time I had ever traveled outside of the country (not counting when I was a baby). It was incredible to taste the unique food, listen to the music, and embrace myself into a different culture. That feeling of trying something brand new and being adventurous is something I will never forget, and I have yearned for another trip ever since.
This scholarship would mean everything to me. Traveling is truly an amazing passion to have, yet it can be difficult due to the costs of travel. I plan on attending Bloomsburg University for a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. I will be participating in the Honors College as well, which has many opportunities to study abroad. Sadly, there aren't any specific for Nursing, but in the future I hope to become a travel nurse. Because I love traveling so much, I know I will continue to travel for the rest of my life as I hope to incorporate it into my career. Traveling to me is about embracing another's culture, and discovering new and exciting things. Those desires of ambition will forever guide me to reach my goals of travel. Receiving this scholarship would take me one step further, and for that I would be incredibly grateful.
