I've always been fascinated by how things work. This curiosity materialized into a passion for chemistry and biology during high school while taking my first advanced science course and working with YES- Youth Exploring Science. Conducting experiments and witnessing firsthand the power of molecular interactions, that I began to understand the deep connection between chemistry and human health. A two-year mentorship under the advisement of Dr. Damian Findlay in the area of oral maxillofacial surgery further sparked a desire to pursue a path where I could merge my interest in science with a commitment to service. That path led me to chemical sciences at Morehouse College, a place that aligns with my academic ambitions, values and long-term goal of becoming an oral maxillofacial surgeon. My decision to attend Morehouse College is rooted in its legacy of cultivating excellence and leadership among Black men. Morehouse represents a community dedicated to social justice, innovation and transformation. I was drawn to the college's dedication to producing scholars who are not only academically inclined but also culturally grounded and morally responsible. In the field of chemical sciences, I knew I would receive a strong foundation in the principles of chemistry while also being encouraged to think critically about how these principles can be applied to solve real-world problems, particularly those that affect underrepresented communities. Chemical sciences provide the framework for understanding the materials and processes that underpin life itself. In my journey toward becoming an oral maxillofacial surgeon. Many underrepresented communities suffer disproportionately from oral diseases due to lack of access to quality care, education and preventative services. By continuing to expand my knowledge, I can stay on the cutting edge of medical and chemical advancements, ensuring that I provide the best possible care to the people who need it most. Lifelong learning also allows me the opportunity to mentor and inspire others. As a Black male in the sciences, I recognize the importance of representation. I want to be a role model who demonstrates the success in STEAM fields, a model that screams that success in STEAM is not only possible but transformative. By staying engaged with research, continuing education, and community outreach, I can help build a pipeline of young students-particularly of color- who see chemical sciences and healthcare as a viable and fulfilling career path. My goal is to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. I will serve our country's underrepresented communities, becoming a leader in my field. My dental/surgical practices will serve as vehicles for providing needed services and bring a wealth of knowledge to communities about the importance of excellent personal hygiene practices i.e. dental care. In closing, my educational career has fueled a passion for working with individuals and institutions to ensure I am amongst the diverse pipeline of talented professionals learning and working in the STEM field. I plan to make a difference in STEM by using my education and career to serve and give back to underrepresented communities- by providing quality healthcare services with an innovative approach transcending current methods.
