Low-income

Many students grow up in underprivileged families, such as those raised by single mothers in low-income households.

When a child grows up with financial insecurity, they often must watch their parents work multiple jobs, endure manual labor, or even face racism, poverty, and discrimination. These experiences can make a student give up on their future before they’ve even begun working towards it, holding them back from achieving their dreams.

This scholarship aims to support students who are pursuing higher education despite the circumstances they were born into.

Any BIPOC high school senior or undergraduate student from a low-income family may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they’re interested in technology, arts, or business and if they have non-profit or volunteering experience.

To apply, tell us how growing up in a low-income household has impacted your values and goals. Additionally, upload images that display who you are, such as photos of your family, your passions, etc.

Coming from a single-mother, low-income household has constantly kept my life on a swivel. Ever since I was a toddle, we would keep moving in and out apartments which caused me to move elementary schools on the latter half of my elementary years. Transportation was always a challenge because I had to take the bus across the town to my elementary school on the northwest side of Houston and that would mean I had to wake up extremely early and I got home extremely late. Despite this, I maintained really good grades up until I moved schools closer to my grandparents house, but this came at the cost of leaving all my friends and teachers I loved behind me as I transferred to a new school. Outside of school was also a challenge socializing with both sides of my family. Since my parents have seperated, I would try to spend every weekend with my dad and his family, so I had to constantly keep packing and moving since they lived across town. It would be exhausting because my mom had to work late nights sometimes so I would basically lose my friday evening having to be dropped off 30 minutes away from my grandparents house. Fast forward to now, and transportation is still a problem because since I grew up mainly with my mom, we have to share the same car because purchasing a new one is very expensive at this current time. Purchasing another car would be too much of burden right now so we have to plan and communicate on when we will both need the car and it's difficult because her and my job schedule. I plan to make a positive impact on the world by giving back to other struggling families. I've seen firsthand how hard my mom has worked to give me the best life she can on her own and I want to let other struggling single parents know that they're not alone and that they're appreciated it. I want to make their lives easier with a bunch of giveaway and charitable offers to help improve their children's live. I'm the only child and it's been a roller coaster financially for my mom and myself, but those out there with multiple children have it much worse. I already participate in multiple non-profit activites with my father since he works on getting less fortunate people items they need like food and other supplies. We also participate in toy drives around christmas time, so I would like to continue down that path to help other struggling families that rely on one parent.
