The Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship represents an opportunity to not only ease the financial burden of my education but also to honor the values of faith and service that have been instrumental in my life. Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned early on about the importance of perseverance, faith, and community. My faith has been a constant source of strength, guiding me through challenges and shaping my aspirations for the future. From a young age, I felt a deep connection to my faith community, which became a second family and a source of support during difficult times. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family, and although resources were often scarce, her unwavering faith in God taught me to trust in His plan. Through church involvement, I found my purpose, participating in youth ministries, volunteering in community outreach programs, and helping organize events to support those in need. These experiences nurtured my passion for service and instilled in me a desire to give back. With faith as my foundation, I have been able to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth. My experiences have taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of lifting others up. They also solidified my desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, a path that allows me to combine my love for animals with my commitment to helping others. As a student majoring in animal science at North Carolina State University, I hope to specialize in pain management and physical therapy for animals, using my skills to improve their quality of life and, by extension, bring joy and comfort to their human families. Balancing academics, work, and church involvement has been challenging, but it has also reinforced the importance of staying grounded in my faith. My church remains a source of inspiration and encouragement, and I am committed to using my education and experiences to serve both my community and God’s greater purpose. Whether through mentoring young people, volunteering in missions, or simply being a source of support to those in need, I intend to live out the values of compassion and service that Jim Maxwell exemplified. This scholarship is meaningful to me because it represents more than financial assistance, it reflects a shared commitment to faith, service, and the belief that every individual has the potential to create positive change. With this support, I can focus more fully on my studies and expand my efforts to serve others. My goal is to use my education to honor God by making a tangible difference in the world, one small act of kindness at a time. In the future, I hope to establish a non-profit organization that provides affordable veterinary care to underserved communities, ensuring that financial limitations do not prevent animals from receiving the care they need. Through this work, I aim to embody the principles of faith, perseverance, and selfless service, showing others the transformative power of trust in God. As I reflect on the role faith has played in my journey, I am reminded of the ways it has shaped my character, strengthened my resolve, and guided my path. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply for the Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship, and I am committed to carrying forward his legacy by living a life that reflects the values of faith, compassion, and service.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship because, at 15 years old, I never imagined that I would be where I am today. I am now 21 , and the most significant day of my life was June 9th, 2019, when I gave my life to Jesus. This decision came after months of wrestling with faith because my parents had come to Christ in November of 2018. At the time, I was distracted by drugs, boys, and gangs. I thought that was all I needed to fill an empty void in my life. Over the next months of attending church with my family, I reached a low point in my life and gave my life to Christ. As I began walking with the Lord, I developed new dreams, hopes, and goals. No one in my family had ever graduated high school, so simply finishing high school felt like an achievement. But the Lord opened doors for me to apply to college, and I did. Though I applied to many Christian universities, financial constraints kept me close to home, and I chose Sonoma State University. I never thought college would be a reality for me, but by God’s grace, I am here today, learning in a place I once thought was out of reach. My faith and education journey have been intertwined with serving the Lord. Since I gave my life to Christ, I have volunteered at the Redwood Gospel Mission, spreading the gospel and serving at events. I have also served at my church, Decision Time, assisting with children’s classes and handling the Zoom and Facebook live streaming for our services. One of the most significant ministries I have been part of is the Bible class I started in my neighborhood. I live in a low-income community, and nearly two years ago, the Lord placed it on my heart to create a Bible class for the kids in my area. I obeyed, and every Monday at 7 p.m., you’ll find me at the community room with the kids, worshiping and learning about the Bible. We’ve named the group “Walking By Faith Kids". Since the start of this class, four children have given their lives to Christ, and parents returned to the Lord. On March 23rd, I had the privilege of witnessing their parents baptism. It was a moment where I saw how God was transforming families through this class. The Bible class has grown, and I currently have about eight kids attending regularly. My father saved up to buy a projector, and we watch Bible stories through the series Super book with the kids. We occasionally do crafts when I’m able to save money, and I make sure to always provide snacks. This class has been entirely funded through the grace of God, with no external support from anyone else but my parents, but we continue because God provides. The Lord has brought me so far, and I never imagined that I would have the privilege to attend college, help at my church, and serve the children in my community. This scholarship would not only help me finish my education but also allow me to invest some of the money in my Bible class, so we could reach more kids. I am the first in my family on both my mom’s and dad’s sides to attend college, and I want to be the first to graduate as well. I am incredibly thankful for all that God has done in my life, and I am excited about the opportunity to further my education and continue serving others.

I have filled out dozens of different scholarship applications, but not on one of them did I feel comfortable sharing my passion for my faith. I am not ashamed of my faith, not in the least bit, but I do know that if I talk about my faith I will be disqualified from a lot of scholarships am grateful that there is an opportunity like this so that other students and I can share about their faith and not be ashamed of it. Although my life has been beautiful with God surrounding every chapter, I have had a few challenges throughout it. I have over ten different disabilities which can complicate a lot of things in my life. When I was first diagnosed with a few of my health conditions I questioned and doubted God because I wondered how a good God could let this happen to me. It is so hard when you think you have this perfect future that looks beautiful, but it gets warped. I did not understand at the time why God would let me get so sick. I would say I do not quite fully understand but, by my faith, I have been able to grow so much closer to God. I have been able to use the disabilities I have to help some of the students in my church. I have been able to help them keep their faith on their health journeys. My faith has made my disabilities not completely rule me. Yes, I still am sick, but I have God on my side, and he has made my life beautiful despite the challenges. Another challenge I faced in my life where unwavering faith has helped me is when my sister attempted to take her own life. I was only ten at the time, but this was a very traumatic thing that I did not quite understand. Because of this event, I have diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Despite the struggle this still causes me, I have already seen the good that has come of it. I learned very quickly that life is something to be treasured, and you never know what someone is going through. I have been able to help some middle scholars in my church through their battles with their siblings attempting and their own mental health battles. My faith is the leading incentive in my future. I am going to a Christian college for a triple major in children’s, youth, and music ministry I have a passion for ministry that is my calling. God has given me the ability to sing and work with young children and students. I already have a lot of experience in all of these fields, but I am excited to see what God does in the coming years of my life. I know that everything that I turn to God he will bless. Jeremiah 17:7 is the verse that I use as my reminder to trust God with everything in my future. It says, "Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him." This reminds me that when I trust in God he will bless my life. I am so excited to see how God uses my life for his holy will.
