At eighteen years old, I found myself trapped in a cycle that I never imagined would define my life. I had been smoking marijuana since I was thirteen, believing it was the only way to escape the emotional pain and hardships I was carrying. What started as a way to numb my feelings gradually became an addiction that took away my motivation, my confidence, and my dreams. After failing a college class and dropping out of school, I convinced myself that I was a failure. I believed I would never accomplish anything meaningful, and I allowed my addiction to control the direction of my life. For years, I struggled to see my own worth. Deep down, I knew I wanted a different future, but fear and self-doubt kept me from believing I was capable of achieving it. In October 2025, I made the most important decision of my life: I chose recovery. That decision was not easy, but it marked the beginning of a new chapter. Instead of turning to marijuana to cope with life's challenges, I committed myself to healing, personal growth, and education. Returning to school was both exciting and intimidating. I was determined to prove to myself that my past did not define my future. Through discipline, perseverance, and countless hours of studying, I earned a 4.0 GPA. Every assignment completed and every exam passed became a reminder that I was stronger than the addiction that once controlled me. My academic success represents much more than good grades; it symbolizes resilience, redemption, and the power of choosing a better path. My journey has inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a Registered Nurse. Having experienced pain, hopelessness, and the challenge of rebuilding my life, I understand how important compassion and encouragement can be. I want to care for patients with empathy, dignity, and without judgment, especially those who may be facing addiction, mental health struggles, or other life-altering challenges. I know what it feels like to believe there is no way forward, and I want to be the person who reminds others that healing and hope are possible. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue building the future I once believed was out of reach. My past is not a source of shame; it is the foundation of my strength. It has taught me that setbacks do not determine our destiny. Through recovery, academic excellence, and my commitment to nursing, I hope to inspire others by showing that with determination, faith, and hard work, it is possible to overcome adversity and create a life dedicated to serving others.

My battle with alcohol addiction lasted ten long years, a period defined by quiet isolation and a desperate search for a way out. It is a profound irony that the most difficult chapter of my life ultimately prepared me to care for others on their hardest days. Overcoming a decade-long reliance on alcohol was not an overnight miracle; it was a grueling, intentional choice made day after day. The catalyst for my sobriety was not found in a clinic, but in the eyes of my daughter. Becoming a single father fundamentally shifted the axis of my world. I realized I could not be the steadfast, present parent she deserved while tethered to a bottle. My recovery was built on radical accountability, a commitment to my family's future, and the unwavering belief that my past did not have to dictate my trajectory. That same desire to be a protective pillar for my daughter evolved into a calling to serve my community. Over the last three years working as an Emergency Medical Technician here in Florida, I have responded to countless patients in the throes of their own crises. When I look at a patient struggling with substance abuse or a medical emergency, I do not pass judgment; I see someone who is fighting, much like I once did. This deep-seated empathy drove my decision to advance my scope of practice and enroll in an Associate Degree in Nursing program. Earning the Budding Flower award for clinical excellence during a recent hospital rotation in Ocala was a humbling reminder that the compassion born from my darkest years has a vital place in the clinical setting. I am pursuing nursing because I want to offer the same grace and critical care that gave me a second chance. My goal is to transition into the emergency room as a Registered Nurse, and eventually serve my community as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Like Jeffrey Robert Burris, I know what it means to fight your way out of the dark, and I know the profound responsibility of holding someone else's life in your hands. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate the heavy financial strain of tuition, allowing me to focus fully on mastering my nursing practice while being a present father.
