My name is Tarryn Wakefield, and growing up in Garner ISD has taught me perseverance and purpose. Academics, athletics, leadership, and service has shaped me into a resilient individual who values discipline, teamwork, and giving back to my community.
I have been a proud member of Garner ISD since Pre-K, and so far, I am one of only three students to attend Garner from PK–12. Garner is more than my school, it is a big part of who I am. Garner is my support system, and the place that instilled in me the importance of responsibility and taking care of one another.
Sports have always been a major part of my life. Athletics through Garner, taught me confidence, accountability, and how to push myself beyond what I thought I could do. As a four-year varsity volleyball and track athlete, I was challenged both physically and mentally. In track, I competed in long jump, individual sprints, and relays, qualifying for regionals or finishing as a regional finalist for the past three years. Individual events taught me focus and self-discipline, while relays showed me the power of trust and teamwork.
In volleyball, I served as libero, a position that required leadership, composure, and constant awareness. I am honored to have been named District Libero of the Year three times, District Defensive Player of the Year, and to earn All-State recognition from the Texas Girls Coaches Association all while representing Garner. While these honors are meaningful, my teammates and those relationships are what I value most. As a new Varsity team my freshman year, we had to come together and compete against some veteran teams even though we were all freshman. Together, we worked hard, played hard, and made a name for the Garner Lady Longhorns!
While athletics were important, academics have always remained a priority. Maintaining All-Academic honors for four years across volleyball and track required strong time management and dedication, especially while also participating in varsity basketball, cheerleading, and UIL One Act Play. In May, I will graduate high school while earning my Associate Degree from Weatherford College. This opportunity was made possible by the teachers and staff at Garner, and I am forever grateful for their commitment to my academic success.
Leadership and service have been central to my Garner experience. As a member of BETA Club, something dear to Ms. Ryan's heart I understand, I served as Vice President for three years and President for one year which strengthened my confidence and reinforced the importance of serving others. Participating in Wreaths Across America has been especially meaningful to me as the daughter and granddaughter of veterans.
I plan to pursue a career as an athletic trainer, so I can support and care for others, particularly in rural communities like Garner. Having seen firsthand how limited access to medical and sports-related care can impact student-athletes, I am motivated to give back by helping others stay healthy, confident, and active.
This scholarship is especially meaningful to my family. My mom had the privilege of knowing and working with Ms. Ryan and often shares fond memories of her sly smile and sense of humor. My mom remembers her as thoughtful, giving, and deeply invested in students and staff. I hope to honor Jean Ryan’s legacy by leading with kindness and service to others.
The Jean Ryan Scholarship would support my educational goals while allowing me to continue striving to make a positive impact. I am committed to using the opportunities I’ve been given at Garner to serve others and give back to the community that has given me so much.
When people ask me to describe myself, the first thing that comes to mind is resilient. A lot of who I am has been shaped by my family, my small school, and the responsibilities I have taken on over the years. I have learned early in life that sometimes you have to grow up a little faster, work a little harder, and stay determined even when things are not easy.
One of the biggest influences in my life has been my dad and the challenges that come with his disability. Watching him navigate everyday life with strength and patience has changed how I see the world. There were times when things at home felt heavier than what most kids my age had to think about. I learned to be more independent and responsible because I wanted to help however I could. Seeing how hard he works despite his limitations has inspired me to never complain about the obstacles in front of me. If he can keep pushing forward, then so can I. His perseverance has become my motivation.
Growing up and attending school in Garner has also played a huge role in shaping who I am. Being in a small school environment meant that teachers truly knew me, not just my name on a roster. They noticed when I struggled and celebrated when I succeeded. I never felt like just another number. The close atmosphere made it easier to ask for help, build relationships, and get involved. It taught me the value of community and support. Everyone looks out for each other, and that has given me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.
Volleyball has been one of those things. Playing over the years has challenged me both mentally and physically. There were long practices, tough losses, and moments when I doubted myself. Balancing sports with schoolwork was not always easy, especially during busy seasons. But volleyball taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to stay calm under pressure. It showed me that success does not come from talent alone. It comes from showing up every day and putting in the effort, even when you are tired. Those lessons have carried over into every part of my life.
At the same time, I have pushed myself academically by taking dual credit classes. Keeping up with college level work while managing high school classes, family responsibilities, and sports has required strong time management and commitment. There were late nights and early mornings, but I stayed focused because I know how important my education is for my future. Taking these classes has prepared me for college and proven to myself that I am capable of more than I sometimes think.
This scholarship means so much to me because it would help lighten the financial burden and allow me to focus fully on my goals. More than that, it would recognize the hard work and determination that have shaped me. Everything I have experienced has taught me to be strong, grateful, and driven. I am ready to carry those qualities with me into the next chapter of my education and make the most of every opportunity I am given.
