Hawai'i Island Sunset Scholarship

Growing up on Hawai’i Island, specifically in the rural and close-knit community of Waimea, has shaped every facet of who I am. Life on the Big Island is grounded in a deep sense of kuleana—a sacred responsibility to care for the land and the people around us. My earliest and most profound lessons began on my family’s farm. Working the fields alongside my grandparents taught me that a community's vitality is physically tied to the collective labor we are willing to put in. This agricultural foundation instilled in me an unshakeable work ethic. Throughout high school, I balanced these family responsibilities with varsity soccer captaincy, HOSA leadership, and multiple part-time jobs, including waking up for 4:00 AM barista shifts. Managing these heavy physical demands while maintaining a 3.95 GPA taught me that resilience is not passive; it is a discipline cultivated through daily grit and humility. Living on Hawai’i Island also exposed me to the stark realities of geographical isolation, particularly regarding healthcare access. Witnessing the disparities that rural communities face when seeking specialized medical attention sparked my passion for pursuing higher education. For me, college is not merely a path to personal advancement; it is the essential toolkit required to effect systemic change. I am driven to pursue a rigorous undergraduate program in health sciences as the foundational step toward my ultimate goal: becoming an international traveling physician's assistant. I want to use my education to step into the most underserved, vulnerable, and dangerous regions of the world to provide high-quality medical care where others cannot or will not go. Eventually, I plan to bring that global expertise back home to Hawai’i Island to establish free, mobile health hubs that protect our rural neighborhoods. Venturing to the mainland for my college academic program is a necessary step to acquire advanced clinical training, yet the financial hurdles of moving and studying away from home are immense. This is precisely where this scholarship becomes a critical catalyst for my success. By alleviating the heavy financial burden of tuition and mainland living expenses, this award will provide the breathing room my family and I need. Instead of dividing my energy between exhausting part-time work shifts to cover costs, I will be able to dedicate myself entirely to the rigorous demands of a pre-medical curriculum. It will allow me to sustain the same academic excellence that drove my high school GPA, ensuring I can master complex clinical concepts and maximize research opportunities. Ultimately, receiving this scholarship is an investment in a local leader who is fully prepared to put in the hard work. It bridges the gap between my rural roots on Hawai’i Island and the global medical arenas where I intend to serve. I promise to honor your generosity by maintaining the absolute highest academic standards in college, keeping my heart forever rooted in the values of Waimea, and spending my adulthood paying your kindness forward to communities in need, both globally and back home on the islands.

I know that I am a very lucky young man to call Hawai'i Island my home. Although I have lived in a couple places around the island, I feel like I have the fondest memories of life in Kona. I have 3 older brothers, one younger and just one sister. Growing up in a large family was extremely fun, but now that I look back, it was also very stressful and expensive too. Our family spent the majority of our free time at the beach; surfing, diving and playing. Not only was it an activity that didn't require a lot of money, but all of us were occupied throughout the day. I even remember my mom designating one afternoon during the school week for the beach....4 boys and my sister, at the time, after teaching the whole day was probably something she needed as well. My dad worked every night so he could take us to school and be home with my baby sister. I learned from a very young age how to body board, free dive with a Hawaiian sling spear (and eat everything we caught), cliff jump, etc. My mom said when I could barely swim, my dad put me in a lift vest and took me on an hour dive in the deepest of waters, yes, she was freaking out! During my 8th grade summer, I decided, and shared with my dad, that I wanted to play football. Being a football player himself, he suggested and started training me in the weight room. I immediately fell in love with weightlifting and football, although I had so much to learn about both. I started educating myself about weightlifting and saw the results every year with the hard work I put in, especially during the football off season. Football was exciting, but challenging at first because I had so much to learn. During my sophomore season, I was asked to come up to the Varsity level, and I got to play in my first state title game. Although we didn't win, that experience prepared me for the following 2 years. As a senior, I was voted as a captain, and I led the BIIF with over 70 tackles. Going to college was honestly not something I considered. Not only did I know how we struggled financially, but I didn't think that was something I wanted to do after high school either. The idea of playing college football is only something I dreamed of and to think it will happen is something I do not take for granted. The idea of getting to take my aloha and spread it throughout Salinas, California, is mindboggling to me. I know this opportunity doesn't come to many, and I can only have this experience with the help of financial aid and other scholarships like this. Please consider my story and allow me the chance to follow my dreams.
