Patrease Eugenia Jones-Brown was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, community leader, and proud graduate of South Carolina State University.

Patrease believed that higher education was more than a path to a career—it was a transformative journey that fostered personal growth, confidence, and opportunity. She championed education as a force for empowerment, often encouraging others to cultivate ambition, take action, and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

Her guiding philosophy was simple yet profound: “Don’t just talk about it—be about it.” Be who you say you are. Do what you say you’re going to do. Become who you were truly meant to be. She embodied this principle in every aspect of her life, inspiring those around her to follow through on their ambitions, stay true to their commitments, and embrace their full potential. Her life was a testament to resilience, purpose, and forward momentum, and through this scholarship, her vibrant spirit will continue to uplift and inspire future generations.

This scholarship seeks to support students who demonstrate resilience, ambition, and a steadfast commitment to their education—qualities that defined Patrease’s life and legacy.

Any BIPOC, female, and/or LGBTQ+ high school senior or undergraduate student may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they have at least a 2.8 GPA and if they live in DC, Maryland, Virginia, or South Carolina.

To apply, submit a video in response to the prompt below. Additionally, upload an impactful picture that aids in telling your story.

Patrease believed that success is not just a goal—it is the byproduct of courage, determination, and intentional choices. She encouraged others to rise above obstacles and embrace the journey of growth, often reminding them:

"Don’t just talk about it—be about it. Be who you say you are. Do what you say you’re going to do. Become who you were truly meant to be."

Please share a video reflecting on a moment in your life when you exhibited resilience, took initiative, or made a bold decision to shape your future. How did you step outside your comfort zone? What motivated you to keep going despite fear or doubt? How does this experience align with your vision for your education and career?

We’re not here for polished perfection or rehearsed answers. We want your voice, your perspective, your story. Tell us about the moment that changed you, the lesson that shaped you, the challenge that forced you to grow. We’re not looking for textbook responses—we’re looking for truth, grit, and personality.

Be bold. Be honest. Be unapologetically you. Because that’s who Patrease would have rooted for—the person who shows up, pushes forward, and steps fully into their own greatness.

Now’s your moment. Go be about it!
