Has a disability

Students with disabilities are often placed at a disadvantage in the academic sphere due to a lack of accommodations in school.

The unique physical or mental needs of students with disabilities often aren’t met in their schools. From ramps to counselors to one-on-one classes, the accessibility tools that students with disabilities would benefit from often aren’t provided. As a result, students with disabilities have to work harder than their peers just to complete their education.

This scholarship seeks to support students with disabilities so they can stay motivated throughout their educational journey and complete their degrees.

Any high school or undergraduate student in Mississippi who has a disability may apply for this scholarship opportunity.

To apply, tell us about your disability and how living with your condition has affected your life.

Living with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD has presented me with unique challenges, both socially and academically. While my peers often found success through traditional means, I have had to navigate obstacles that required additional effort, perseverance, and creativity. However, rather than allowing these differences to hold me back, they became the driving forces behind my determination to succeed. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced difficulties with social interaction and focus, yet I have consistently reached my academic goals. Staying organized, managing deadlines, and adapting to classroom environments often demanded more from me than from my peers. Despite this, I remained committed to excelling in my studies, a commitment that was recognized when I received the Pride of Oak Grove Award for outstanding academic achievement and citizenship. Outside of the classroom, I have also embraced leadership and teamwork. I spent four years participating in archery, where I won the state championship every year and qualified for nationals each season. Archery taught me patience, concentration, and the value of consistent practice—skills that I applied both in sports and in academics. In addition to archery, I proudly served in JROTC, where I supported the football team at games and participated in team challenges. JROTC provided me with a sense of belonging and further developed my discipline, leadership, and resilience. Balancing JROTC, sports, academics, and part-time work at a local supermarket required careful time management and dedication. It allowed me to to learn and apply more responsibility, teamwork and communication skills. Additionally my part-time job allowed me to develop professional skills while also helping me to gain more financial independence and learn to budget and save. These experiences have shaped who I am today: someone who is determined, hardworking, and capable of thriving in the face of adversity. Receiving the Freedom for Disabled Students Scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of pursuing higher education, but it would also recognize the hard work and resilience that have characterized my life thus far. I've been told that Biomedical Sciences is one of the hardest majors, yet I am fully committed to overcome any challenges that may lie ahead as Biology is where my true passion lies. Looking ahead, I am committed to continuing my academic journey with the same tenacity I have demonstrated throughout high school. I aspire to use my education to contribute meaningfully to my community, showing others that disabilities do not define limitations, but rather serve as opportunities to overcome and inspire. Thank you for considering my application.
