We called her Lola. I never thought that a name could carry so much meaning, but she proved me wrong. My mom brought her home around Christmas. A Christmas I will never forget because I had finally made a friend. Yeah, she had four legs and kept me on my two constantly, yet at times when I felt like a nuisance to the world, Lola's eyes reminded me that to her, I was the world.  Lola's presence filled the silence; she didn't need words, she spoke through actions, and was always true to her word with her presence. It seemed she always had a calmness about her, as if she carried a quiet wisdom beyond her years. She would sit by my side, tail wagging, in a way to say, 'I am here.' Throughout my long journey with Lola, I had noticed a lump on her belly, and the people around me thought it was harmless. I felt reassured, but this experience later taught me the importance of taking action instead of just assuming. Returning from a trip, I had noticed a huge decline in her health. She was weak and once bright and curious; I noticed a change in her eyes. They had lost their light. Instantly, I knew that the “unharmful” tumor I found 3 months ago was now cancerous. She was put down that day. I knew Lola would not want me to dwell on my mistake; instead, she would want me to persevere and learn. Losing Lola opened my eyes to how critical it is to act with intention and care. I began by putting in my application to a vet clinic. For two years, I had postponed gaining my veterinary experience. After her passing, I realized how important it is to take steps toward my career. I have successfully fulfilled the requirement of 300 hours of experience at the veterinary clinic, which qualifies me for the veterinary assistant certification. Her loss gave me the drive to dedicate myself to Veterinary work. My love for animals allows me to strive to make sure no details are missed about their health and behavior. Experiencing Lola's passing taught me to act with purpose and intention, which is why I want to prevent similar heartache for owners. By being alert and making educated choices every day, I strive to serve my community better by caring for the pets that so many find joy and friends in.  This would help me be the greatest help to others, and in that act heal me as well. They say life is about loving and learning, and this would help me do both.
