1. During my sophomore year, I faced a turning point that reshaped my sense of responsibility and the direction of my life. I began to realize that the friend group I had grown up with was no longer growing with me. We had been close since seventh grade, but by sophomore year, partying had become a regular part of our lives. At first, I went along with it, convincing myself I could balance everything. I was still earning straight A’s, but I could feel my focus slipping and my priorities becoming unclear. I remember feeling constantly drained and conflicted, stuck between loyalty to my friends and a growing sense that I was heading in the wrong direction. Everything changed in February 2024, when a close friend of mine was involved in a serious car crash. In that moment, everything felt real. I remember thinking about how quickly things could go wrong and questioning the choices I had been making. It forced me to step back and look honestly at my environment. For the first time, I saw that the path I was on did not reflect who I wanted to become. Choosing to step away was not easy. I lost most of my friend group and went through a period of isolation. In the moment, it felt uncomfortable and uncertain, but I knew it was necessary. That decision taught me that responsibility sometimes means making difficult choices, even when they come with short-term loss. After that, I made a conscious effort to rebuild my environment. I joined Track and Field, which introduced me to discipline and a new sense of purpose. That experience led me to Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Soccer, Leo Club, and DECA. Through these activities, I found a community that supported growth and shared ambition. I also met mentors like Crystal Ozaki and Grant Heath, who guided me and helped me stay accountable to my goals. This experience taught me that responsibility is not just about managing schoolwork, but about being intentional with the people, environments, and choices that shape your life. It showed me that growth often requires discomfort and the willingness to leave behind what is familiar. As I prepare for life after graduation, this lesson continues to guide me. I am focused on pursuing opportunities that challenge me, surround me with motivated individuals, and push me to grow both personally and professionally. More importantly, I carry a stronger sense of self-awareness and responsibility, knowing that my future will be shaped by the decisions I make and the standards I set for myself. 2. Something that isn’t reflected in my transcript or résumé is how intentionally I structure my life around balance and perspective. While I am the valedictorian of my class, I have learned that achievement alone is not enough without a sense of grounding. Living on Kauaʻi has shaped that mindset. I make it a priority to spend time outdoors every day, whether that is working out, going to the beach, hiking, or simply being with friends. These moments are not distractions from my goals, but what allow me to stay motivated and consistent. Growing up here has made me realize how easy it is to overlook what is right in front of you. I choose not to. This perspective keeps me present and prevents burnout. It allows me to approach my responsibilities with clarity and purpose. To me, success is not just about accomplishment, but about building a life that is both driven and meaningful.
