"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." – Malcolm X

Charles E. Nettles was a historian and educator for over 30 years. After attending Alabama A&M University, he continued his education at what was then San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University, Northridge). He shaped many great minds in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, and we hope to continue his legacy through this scholarship.

Upon graduating college, many students are unprepared for the limited funding available for graduate programs and the financial burdens that come with pursuing advanced degrees. With the rising costs of tuition and the growing student debt crisis, countless prospective graduate students are left discouraged.

This scholarship aims to change that and make higher education a little more accessible for HBCU graduates.

We want to inspire applicants to reach their highest potential and shine even brighter than they did in undergrad.

Any undergraduate senior or recent graduate of an HBCU is eligible to apply.

My journey hasn’t been a straight line. It’s been more like a blueprint under revision: sketched, erased, redrawn, and built up again. I’m currently in the thick of completing my licensure; juggling AXP hours, studying for the exams, and balancing the quiet pressure of trying to prove, to myself and others, that I belong in this space. Some days, it feels like I’m part of my own personal “Marching 100”; moving forward with rhythm and rigor, driven by an internal beat that won’t let me quit. That metaphor resonates with me, because architecture, like a marching band, is about structure, timing, harmony, and discipline. It’s about making something bigger than yourself, and knowing that even the smallest steps have meaning. Many would have given up on their dreams, but I will always continue to push on. I’m still marching. And I’m not stopping anytime soon. As an inspiring student driven by creative work and inspired by all dimensions of art, architecture, and illustrations. I invision an environment that does more than serve a function but creates an experience by evoking a unique emotional response. Both my academic and professional life, combined with training and experience, have provided me with a great foundation of knowledge and skills. Pursuing graduate school has always been a dream of mine, but it's one that comes with significant financial challenges. My plan is to enroll at the Academy of Art University to pursue a Masters in Architecture. The program is designed to develop my unique architectural perspective. Aiming to become a fully formed designer, well-versed in up-to-date technical developments, contemporary architectural design, and the practice of making and building. The professional M.Arch degree will offer me an internationally recognized credential and is the first step towards professional licensure in the US and many other countries around the globe. Why architecture? Architecture has always felt like a calling, not just a career. I see design as a way to shape not only buildings but the way people experience space, memory, and movement. Growing up in a construction home has taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and building something lasting from the ground up. My family worked hard to make a living through physical labor, difficult conditions and with limited resources. From a young age, I learned that nothing comes easy, and everything worth having requires effort, precision, and patience. That environment shaped who I am today. A graduate school scholarship would not only ease the financial burden on me and my family, but it would also represent a bridge between where I come from and where I’m going. With this support, I can focus fully on my studies, embrace opportunities for research and mentorship, and eventually give back to the community. A scholarship is more than financial aid to me; it’s a tool to keep building, and a way to honor where I came from while reaching for where I want to be. But chasing that vision has meant learning to push through stress, doubt, and the relentless demands of assignments and exams. I’m not at the finish line yet. But I’m still marching forward, upward, with vision and grit. And I’ll get there.

Continuing my education post-graduation is a decision deeply influenced by my 50-year-old mother's inspiring journey. In 2022, after three decades of perseverance and dedication, she graduated with her master's, proving that it is never too late to pursue one's dreams and achieve academic excellence. Witnessing her tenacity and the positive impact her advanced degree has had on her life and career, I was inspired to follow in her footsteps and further my education by pursuing a Masters's in Healthcare Administration. Healthcare has always been a passion of mine. I believe that every individual deserves access to high-quality healthcare services and a positive patient experience during their medical journey. My love for healthcare has driven me to seek opportunities to make a difference in the industry, and pursuing a Masters's in Healthcare Administration is the perfect path to achieve this goal. With a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, I will gain comprehensive knowledge and expertise in healthcare management, policy, finance, and leadership. This program will equip me with the necessary skills to navigate the complex healthcare system efficiently and effectively. I will learn to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to optimize patient care and operational efficiency within healthcare facilities. One specific career goal that drives my desire to pursue this degree is to become a Director of Patient Experience. As a Director of Patient Experience, I will be in a position to oversee and coordinate the efforts of all staff members involved in patient care, ensuring that each aspect of their hospital stay or medical encounter is comfortable, supportive, and compassionate. This role aligns perfectly with my innate leadership spirit, as I have always been drawn to taking charge, guiding others, and fostering a positive work environment. The role of a Director of Patient Experience requires strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. This degree program will provide me with ample opportunities to hone my leadership and communication abilities through coursework, group projects, and practical experiences. Furthermore, earning a Master's in Healthcare Administration will not only help me excel professionally but also contribute to the greater good by positively impacting patients' lives. It is a chance to work towards creating a healthcare system that is patient-centered, efficient, and continuously improving. As I embark on this academic journey, I am excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead. I am prepared to put in the hard work, dedication, and time required to succeed in the program. My mother's example has taught me that persistence and commitment can lead to remarkable achievements, regardless of the obstacles faced along the way. In conclusion, my decision to pursue a Master's in Healthcare Administration is a combination of my passion for healthcare, my natural inclination toward leadership, and the profound influence of my mother's academic accomplishments. By obtaining this advanced degree, I hope to become a competent and compassionate healthcare leader, working towards improving patient experiences and contributing positively to the healthcare industry as a whole. I am eager to embrace this opportunity for personal and professional growth and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
