When I was ten years old, I was convinced I would make the next great scientific discovery. I spent hours watching science documentaries, filling notebooks with ideas, and asking my father, an airplane mechanic, endless questions about how things worked. What fascinated me most was not just the answers but the possibility that science and engineering could solve problems that once seemed impossible. Today, that same belief inspires me to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Science and engineering are making life better across the globe by improving health, increasing access to resources, and creating solutions that help people live safer and more connected lives. What makes these fields so powerful is that their impact often extends far beyond laboratories and research facilities. Their innovations reach hospitals, schools, homes, and entire communities. One area where I have seen this impact firsthand is healthcare. As a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital, I spent over 120 hours assisting staff and supporting patients. While my role focused on non-medical tasks, the experience showed me how much modern medicine depends on scientific and engineering advancements. From diagnostic equipment to patient monitoring systems, technology allows healthcare professionals to provide faster, more accurate, and more effective care. Companies like Bio-Rad contribute directly to this progress by creating tools that help researchers and medical professionals better understand diseases and improve patient outcomes. Behind every breakthrough are scientists and engineers working together to save lives. Engineering is also improving lives by making knowledge and opportunity more accessible. As President of my school's Technology Student Association, I help organize monthly STEM workshops for elementary and middle school students through our Curious Minds outreach program. During these sessions, we teach young students about engineering design, problem-solving, and technology through hands-on challenges. Watching a child successfully build a bridge, design a solution, or discover a love for science reminds me that innovation begins with curiosity. By encouraging the next generation to explore STEM, we help create future scientists, engineers, and innovators who will continue solving global challenges. My own journey has shown me the importance of opportunity. After immigrating from Ecuador to the United States, I often felt overwhelmed by a new language, a new culture, and a new education system. Yet science became a universal language that helped me rebuild my confidence. Through engineering competitions, research, and leadership experiences, I learned that every problem can be approached step by step. That mindset has shaped how I view challenges and why I believe engineering has the power to transform lives. The values that drive scientific progress are the same values that I strive to demonstrate: staying focused on meaningful goals, taking accountability for my work, creating sustainable solutions, and working together with others. These principles are essential because the world's biggest challenges cannot be solved by individuals alone. They require collaboration, creativity, and a commitment to helping others. Science and engineering make life better because they turn curiosity into action. They transform ideas into technologies, discoveries into treatments, and challenges into opportunities. As I pursue a career in engineering, I hope to contribute to that process by creating innovative solutions that improve people's lives and strengthen communities. Like the scientists and engineers who inspire me, I want my work to make a difference not only in what we build, but in the people we help along the way.
