Our story
Bernard Antonio Andrews was someone who believed deeply in using what he knew and what he had accomplished to help others move forward.
Throughout his life, Bernard mentored young people, shared his professional experience, offered guidance, and helped create opportunities for others. He had a particular commitment to helping young Black women and men develop professionally and believe in what they were capable of achieving.
When the people he mentored asked why he spent so much of his time helping them, Bernard's answer was simple: “Because I can.”
Those three words captured the way he lived. Bernard believed that if you had the knowledge to teach someone, the experience to guide them, the connections to open a door, or simply the ability to help, then you should.
He valued education, engineering, hard work, perseverance, leadership, and service, but what made him special was his willingness to invest those qualities in other people. His success was never something he believed should benefit only himself.
We want Bernard to be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for the people he encouraged, mentored, and helped along the way. The most meaningful way we can honor him is to continue that work.
Through this fund, Bernard's “Because I Can” philosophy can live on by helping the next generation of mechanical engineers pursue their education, become leaders in their profession, mentor others, and someday open doors for the people who come after them.
That is the legacy we hope this fund will carry forward.
Our goal
The Bernard Antonio Andrews Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to honor the life and legacy of Bernard Antonio Andrews and continue the impact he made through engineering, mentorship, leadership, and service to others.
Bernard spent much of his life helping young people—particularly aspiring professionals and engineers—develop their careers and find opportunities. When asked why he devoted so much of his time to helping others, his answer was simple: “Because I can.” Those words reflected his belief that when you have the ability to share your knowledge, open a door, create an opportunity, or help someone succeed, you have a responsibility to do so.
The fund will support the Bernard Antonio Andrews Memorial Scholarship “Because I Can,” which provides financial awards to mechanical engineering students who demonstrate technical ability, perseverance, leadership, mentorship, service, and a commitment to helping those who follow them.
The inaugural scholarship will award two students $500 each. Our goal in establishing this fund is to allow family, friends, colleagues, former mentees, engineering professionals, and others who believe in Bernard’s values to contribute to the scholarship and help us increase its impact over time.
As the fund grows, we hope to continue offering the scholarship, increase the amount of support available to recipients, and potentially support additional mechanical engineering students while preserving the core mission behind the award: recognizing students who not only have the potential to become outstanding engineers, but who are committed to using their success to create opportunities for others.
Every contribution helps carry Bernard’s philosophy forward—because if we have the ability to help someone, we should. Because we can.
