When Bernard was asked by the young Black women and men he mentored why he took the time to help them build their careers, his answer was simple: “Because I can.” That response reflected a life of service, generosity, and responsibility. Bernard believed that when you have the ability to open a door, offer guidance, share knowledge, or help someone move forward, you should. This scholarship honors that legacy by supporting students who are working to build their future, especially those who understand the value of mentorship, perseverance, and community. It is a reminder that opportunity grows when people choose to help simply because they can.
