Winning this scholarship means so much to me, especially as someone who is going into biomedical engineering with a focus on robotics and prosthetics! I am so fortunate to have won the scholarship! I got the announcement March 31st, which just so happened to be my birthday and I couldn't have asked for a greater gift.

I want to express my deepest gratitude for selecting me as the recipient of the Joanne Pransky Women in Robotics Scholarship. I am truly honored and humbled by this generous award, and it means more to me than words can express. The short story I used to apply for this scholarship was inspired by my late grandfather, who passed away a few years ago. He was a source of great strength and inspiration in my life, and being able to honor his memory through this award makes it even more special and meaningful. It is incredibly touching to know that his story contributed to this opportunity, helping me continue my education in robotics. As a first-generation immigrant from Honduras, pursuing higher education, especially in a male-dominated field like robotics, has been both a personal and professional challenge. This scholarship not only helps alleviate the financial burden of my Master of Engineering in Robotics program but also reinforces my commitment to pushing boundaries and contributing to the field. This support brings me one step closer to my goal of developing technologies that can transform lives, including assistive robotics inspired by my grandfather’s experiences with blindness. Moreover, it strengthens my drive to empower other women in STEM, helping them overcome the same challenges I’ve faced along the way. Thank you once again for your belief in my potential and your generosity. I look forward to making the most of this opportunity and paying it forward in the future. Sincerely, Susie Diaz Ferrera

    Emily Chu

I'm honored to be a finalist for the Joanne Pransky Celebration of Women in Robotics. This recognition touches me deeply, validating not just my work but my commitment to creating pathways for women in robotics. Throughout my journey, I've witnessed firsthand how representation matters. Each robotics workshop I've led, each mentoring relationship I've built, has strengthened my belief that diversity drives innovation. The barriers I've overcome have shaped my determination to ensure others find doors open where I found walls. This recognition fuels my resolve to continue this essential work, where I hope to not just advance robotics technology, but nurture the brilliant minds who will reimagine its future. Thank you for your time and consideration, Emily Chu
