The Shining Star scholarship This scholarship was established in memory of Steven Swiney. Steven was a beaming light of positivity who touched countless lives before his passing on July 4, 2018. He was only 21 years old. Tragically, his death was linked to the devastating fentanyl crisis which continues to claim far too many lives. Before his substance abuse became an obstacle, Steven was pursuing a degree in computer engineering at a STEM college in Missouri. Steven was the Shining Star in the lives of everyone who knew him. He had the ability to make people feel accepted and valued which fostered deep connections that resulted in a wide circle of friends. As his friends described, Steven brought people together naturally. He was loyal, completely selfless. He could always be counted on if anyone needed something. The Shining Star scholarship will provide financial assistance to help recipients achieve their educational and professional goals. Keeping Steven’s legacy alive. Steven once said he wouldn’t change any of the difficulties he encountered with his substance abuse. He felt the struggle had made him a better and more empathetic person.
