Ms. Nancy Roberts, words can not express the gratitude I have for the opportunity you have chosen me for! I am honored that I have been chosen to receive the Miguel Mendez Social Justice scholarship. This is a blessing that will help lighten the stresses that come from the financial burdens of continuing education, especially with having a family of six. I am deeply touched that you have noticed the passion of my dream to help better our justice systems and decided I was deserving of the generous award you are providing. Thank you for your care and concern to assist myself and others like myself in making it to the finish line of our dreams.

Good Afternoon, Nancy, I wanted to begin this letter with expressing my deepest gratitude for having been given the opportunity to receive this award. I am entering my second year at Cal Poly Humboldt studying Environmental Resources Engineering with a minor in Comparative Ethnic Studies. I am currently completing an internship with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association where I am fueling my passion for learning and analyzing climate change research. I want to apply all the knowledge and skills I learn over the years to promote environmental justice and work in water filtration projects. Being a first-generation student here in Humboldt has been a challenge, more importantly a financial challenge. My father was deported when I was young, so I was raised by a single mother. I worked two on-campus jobs on top of taking 17 units my first year to support myself financially so to receive this aid alleviates the stress that being financially independent brings. I have the opportunity to do what I enjoy most, which is help my surrounding community and absorb the most knowledge I can, thank you. Sincerely,

As I write this thank you note a year later, I still feel the impact that this scholarship provided me every day as I continue my education. When applying to scholarships, always present is the feeling of perseverance and honor. Especially with memorial scholarships, which never fails to have the additional layer of honoring a loved one through providing aid for others. Thank you for selecting me, and know that your generous award will motivate me until far into my career in mental health.
