Mission

In March 2019, Todd and Mia Minor's son, Matthew, died after participating in a choking challenge he found on social media. Todd & Mia established a foundation in Matthew's memory to educate others about the dangers of online challenges and promote online safety. In that same year, they became advocates for online safety & social media reform. Since Matthew’s passing, they have dedicated their efforts to raising awareness about the dangers of online challenges and advocating for social media regulation, including the Maryland Kids Code. The Matthew E. Minor Awareness Foundation: Here's a more detailed look at their story and advocacy: Advocacy for social media regulation: They have testified before Congress and worked with state legislators to advocate for policies that protect children online. Maryland Kids Code: They championed the Maryland Kids Code, a law aimed at holding social media companies accountable for the safety of children online. Monthly Podcast: They host a monthly podcast titled ” Resiliency Podcast.” Ongoing advocacy: The Minors continue to speak out, sharing their story and pushing for greater accountability from social media companies, according to Instagram. "Generation Swipe": A documentary with ABC News titled "Generation Swipe," featuring the Minors' story and their advocacy work, was released on Hulu. Community engagement: The Minors are involved in community events and share their message to help prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies. https://www.matthewminorfoundation.org/

Hi Matthew E. Minor Awareness Foundation, I just want to say a huge thank you for awarding me this scholarship. It really means a lot to me, not just financially, but also as motivation to keep working toward my goals. Cybersecurity is something I’m really passionate about, and knowing that there are organizations like yours supporting students like me makes a big difference. The work you do to raise awareness about online dangers and help families is so important, and I truly appreciate the impact you're making. This scholarship will help me focus on my education at Appalachian State, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support. Winning this scholarship is a big deal for me. It’s not just about the money, it’s about knowing that others believe in me and what I want to do. Cybersecurity is all about protecting people, and that lines up with the mission of this foundation, which makes it even more meaningful. This support pushes me to keep going and work toward making a real difference in the field. I’m super grateful for this opportunity. Thanks Again!

This means a lot to me as I am an advocate for anti-bullying efforts. I stand for unity and community amongst everyone instead of division, especially in today’s society, where we need to lean on each other the most.

Being a Matthew E. Minor Awareness Foundation scholarship winner is a great honor. It represents not just financial support for my education but also recognition of my dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. This scholarship validates my passion for early and special education, reinforcing my commitment to helping children like my sister, who has autism and Down syndrome. It also reminds me that hard work, resilience, and compassion do not go unnoticed. Balancing my academics, leadership in band, work responsibilities, and volunteer efforts with such as the prom dress giveaway and helping those in need, has been challenging. Still, this scholarship shows that my efforts have made an impact. Most importantly, receiving this scholarship connects me to a legacy of awareness and advocacy, inspiring me to continue making education more inclusive and accessible for all students. Thank you.
