I created the Maverick Scholarship for the student whose record doesn't yet show what they're capable of — not because the ability isn't there, but because their circumstances never left room to prove it. I know that student because I was that student. I grew up in an unsettled home with ongoing financial strain, and by the time I graduated high school I was on my own, with average grades and almost no idea how the college system even worked. My transcript wasn't a measure of what I could do — it was a measure of what I was up against. Then I got a foothold: a Pell Grant carried me through my first year, and for the first time I could pour my full energy into school. The result was a completely different student — straight A's, magna cum laude, and a string of scholarships that carried me the rest of the way. That's what a Maverick is. Not the student with every advantage and a polished résumé, but the one who has learned to thrive no matter the conditions — independent, underestimated, and determined to break out on their own terms. Given a fair shot, that student doesn't just survive. They transform.
